Claims
- 1. In an anticalculus dentifrice composition containing in an orally acceptable vehicle one or a mixture of water soluble alkali metal pyrophosphates as essential anticalculus agents, a dentally acceptable polishing agent, and an amount of a fluoride ion source sufficient to supply about 25 ppm to about 2,000 ppm of fluoride ions, the improvement wherein salivary hydrolysis of P--O--P bonds in said pyrophosphates by phosphatase enzymes is inhibited consisting essentially of including in said composition an effective inhibiting amount therefor within the range of about 0.05% to about 3% of a water soluble alkali metal or ammonium synthetic anionic linear polymeric polycarboxylate salt, said composition when applied to teeth being effective to inhibit calculus.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said fluoride ion source comprises sodium fluoride.
- 3. A composition according to claim 2 wherein said linear polymeric polycarboxylate comprises a copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic acid or anhydride.
- 4. A composition according to claim 3 wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight of about 30,000 to about 500,000.
- 5. A composition according to claim 3 wherein said polyphosphate salt consists essentially of tetraalkalimetal pyrophosphates.
- 6. A method of inhibiting the formation of dental calculus comprisnig applying to teeth a calculus-inhibiting amount of a composition as defined in claim 1.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said alkali metal in said pyrophosphates is independently sodium or potassium or a mixture thereof.
- 8. A composition according to claim 3 wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight of about 70,000.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 containing about 0.005 to about 1.0% of said fluoride ion source.
- 10. A dentifrice composition according to claim 1 having a pH of about 4.5 to about 9 and made with, approximately by weight,
- (a) 2 to 7% of water soluble tetraalkali metal pyrophosphate salts,
- (b) 0.005 to 1.0% of fluoride-providing compound,
- (c) a water soluble alkali metal or ammonium synthetic anionic linear polymeric polycarboxylate salt having a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 1,000,000, and
- (d) an orally acceptable vehicle containing a dentally acceptable polishing agent, said composition when applied to teeth being effective to inhibit calculus.
- 11. A dentifrice composition according to claim 10 wherein component (a) consists essentially of a mixture of different such pyrophosphate salts, component (b) comprises sodium fluoride, and component (c) comprises a sodium salt of a hydrolyzed copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic acid or anhydride having a molecular weight of about 30,000 to about 500,000.
- 12. A dentifrice composition according to claim 11 wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight of about 70,000.
- 13. A dentifrice composition according to claim 11 containing about 6% of component (a).
- 14. A dentifrice composition according to claim 1 having a pH of about 4.5 to abuot 9 and containing about 0.1 to about 7% of one or a mixture of water soluble alkali metal pyrophosphate salts.
- 15. A dentrifice composition according to claim 14 wherein said polycarboxylate has a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 1,000,000.
