Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR19## wherein X is CH; Y is --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --; R is hydrogen, loweralkyl, phenylloweralkyl of the formula ##STR20## or cycloalkylloweralkyl in which the cycloalkyl portion contains from 3 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are the same or different and each can be hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy of from 1 to 2 carbon atoms, loweralkyl, hydroxy or trifluoromethyl; m is the integer 1 or 2; n is the integer 1, 2 or 3; the sum of m and n is 3 or 4; p is the integer 1, 2, 3 or 4; or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 2. A compound as defined in claim 1 wherein R.sup.3 is hydrogen.
- 3. A compound as defined in claim 2 wherein R is phenylloweralkyl of the formula ##STR21## or cycloalkylloweralkyl in which the cycloalkyl portion contains from 3 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 4. A compound defined in claim 2 wherein R is hydrogen, or loweralkyl.
- 5. A compound defined in claim 4 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and each can be hydrogen, fluorine, methyl or methoxy.
- 6. The compound as defined in claim 1, when X is CH and Y is --CH.sub.2).sub.2 of the formula ##STR22## wherein R is --H, lower alkyl, --CH.sub.2 .phi., --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 .phi., or --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 .phi.; R.sup.1 to R.sup.3 is --H, --hal, --OH, or 1--2C alkoxy; or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 7. A compound as defined in claim 6 wherein R.sup.3 is hydrogen.
- 8. A compound as defined in claim 6 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and each can be hydrogen, fluorine, methyl or methoxy.
- 9. The compound defined in claim 6 which is 1-methyl-4-(.alpha.-phenyl-2-tolyl)piperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 10. The compound defined in claim 6 which is 4-(.alpha.-phenyl-2-tolyl)piperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 11. The compound defined in claim 6 which is 4-[.alpha.-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-tolyl]-1-methylpiperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 12. The compound defined in claim 6 which is 4-[.alpha.-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-tolyl]piperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 13. The compound defined in claim 6 which is 4-[.alpha.-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-tolyl]-1-methylpiperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 14. The compound defined in claim 6 which is 4-[.alpha.-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-tolyl]piperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 15. The compound defined in claim 6 which is 4-[.alpha.-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-tolyl]piperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 16. The compound as defined in claim 6 which is 4-[.alpha.-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-tolyl)-1-methylpiperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 17. The compound as defined in claim 6 which is 1-phenethyl-4-(.alpha.-phenyl-2-tolyl)piperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 18. The compound as defined in claim 1 when m is 1, X is CH and Y is --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 -- of the formula ##STR23## wherein R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 are as defined in claim 1; or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 19. The compound as defined in claim 18 which is 3-.alpha.-phenyl-2-tolyl)pyrrolidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 20. The compound as defined in claim 18 which is 1-cyclopropylmethyl-3-(.alpha.-phenyl-2-tolyl)pyrrolidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 21. The compound as defined in claim 18 which is 1-methyl-3-(.alpha.-phenyl-2-tolyl)pyrrolidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 22. An anti-depressant pharmaceutical composition which comprises between 0.5 and about 70% by weight of a compound defined in claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier therefor.
- 23. A method for treatment of depression which comprises administering to a depressed patient a pharmaceutically effective amount of an anti-depressant compound defined in claim 1.
- 24. A method for treatment of depression which comprises administering to a depressed patient a pharmaceutically effective amount of an anti-depressant compound defined in claim 6.
