Claims
- 1. An herbicidal composition comprising:
- a) an herbicidally effective amount of a 3-isoxazolidinone herbicide having the formula ##STR12## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently methyl or ethyl; X is hydrogen, methyl, chlorine, bromine or fluorine; Y is chlorine, bromine or fluorine; and n is 0, 1 or 2; and
- b) a non-phytotoxic, antidotally effective amount, with respect to a corn crop, of an antidote compound having the formula ##STR13## in which X is O or S and R.sub.1 -R.sub.6 are variously independently hydrogen, lower alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkylthioalkyl, or phenyl, or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 taken together form an alkylene group.
- 2. An herbicidal composition as defined in claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are methyl for the herbicidal 3-isoxazolidinone.
- 3. An herbicidal composition as defined in claim 2 wherein said herbicidally active ingredient is 2-(2-chlorophenyl)methyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolidinone.
- 4. An herbicidal composition as defined in claim 1 wherein, in the antidotal compound, R.sub.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, R.sub.2 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 taken together form a butylene, pentylene or hexylene group optionally substituted by one or two methyl groups; R.sub.3 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkoxyalkyl, or phenyl; R.sub.4 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; and R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are independently hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl.
- 5. An herbicidal composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said antidote compound is 2,2,5-trimethyl-3-(dichloroacetyl)-1,3-oxazolidine.
- 6. An herbicidal composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said antidote compound is 3-(dichloroacetyl)-2,2-spirocyclohexyl oxazolidine.
- 7. An herbicidal composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said herbicidally active ingredient is 2-(2-chlorophenyl) methyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolidinone and said antidote is 2,2,5-trimethyl-3-(dichloroacetyl)-1,3-oxazolidine.
- 8. An herbicidal composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the ratio of herbicide to antidote ranges from between about 0.1:1 to about 30:1.
- 9. An herbicidal composition as defined in claim 8 wherein the ratio of herbicide to antidote ranges from between about 1:1 to about 20:1.
- 10. A method of controlling undesirable vegetation in the presence of a corn crop comprising applying to the locus of said vegetation or said crop an herbicidal composition comprising
- a) an herbicidally effective amount of a 3-isoxazolidinone herbicide having the formula ##STR14## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently methyl or ethyl; X is hydrogen, methyl, chlorine, bromine or fluorine; Y is chlorine, bromine or fluorine, and n is 0, 1 or 2; and
- b) a non-phytotoxic, antidotally effective amount, with respect to a corn crop, of an antidote compound having the formula ##STR15## in which X is O or S and R.sub.1 -R.sub.6 are variously independently hydrogen, lower alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkylkthioalkyl, or phenyl, or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 taken together form an alkylene group.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 wherein said herbicide is 2-(2-chlorophenyl)methyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolidinone.
- 12. A method according to claim 10 wherein, in the antidotal compound R.sub.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 taken together form a butylene, pentylene or hexylene group optionally substituted by one or two methyl groups; R.sub.3 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkoxyalkyl, or phenyl R.sub.4 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; and R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are independently hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl.
- 13. A method according to claim 10 wherein said antidote is 2,2,5-trimethyl-3-(dichloroacetyl)-1-3-oxazolidine.
- 14. A method according to claim 10 wherein the ratio of herbicide to antidote ranges from about 0.1:1 to about 30:1.
- 15. A method according to claim 10 wherein the 3-isoxazolidinone and the antidote are first combined into a composition and the composition is applied to the locus.
- 16. A method according to claim 10 wherein the 3-isoxazolidinone is applied to the locus and the antidote is separately applied to the locus.
- 17. A method according to claim 10 wherein the antidote is applied as a seed treatment for the crop seed prior to planting.
