Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR36## wherein R.sub.1 =H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl;
- R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently=3-pyridyl or ##STR37## where X=H, F, Cl, Br, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy, di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl)amino or CH.sub.3 S(O).sub.n where
- n=0, 1 or 2; and
- Y=H, F or Cl;
- with the proviso that when Y is F or Cl, then X is F or Cl;
- R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 independently=H, CF.sub.3, CF.sub.2 H, CFCl.sub.2, CF.sub.2 Cl, CF.sub.2 CF.sub.3, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl or CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.3 ;
- with the provisos (1) that no more than one of R.sub.4 or R.sub.5 can be selected from the group consisting of H and C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, (2) that no more than one of R.sub.4 or R.sub.5 can be CF.sub.2 CF.sub.3 and (3) that when one of R.sub.4 or R.sub.5 is CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.3, then the other R.sub.4 or R.sub.5 must be H; or
- R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 taken together=CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CFZ--,
- where
- Z=F, Cl or Br;
- R.sub.6 =H; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl;
- R.sub.7 =H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; benzyl; benzyl substituted by up to three substituents, where said substituents are independently selected from F, Cl, Br, NO.sub.2, CF.sub.3 C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy; ##STR38## benzoyl; or benzoyl substituted by up to three substituents, where said substituents are independently selected from F, Cl, Br, NO.sub.2, CF.sub.3, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy; or --COOR.sub.8 ;
- R.sub.8 =C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; phenyl; phenyl substituted by up to three substituents, where said substituents are independently selected from F, Cl, Br, NO.sub.2, CF.sub.3, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy; benzyl or benzyl substituted by up to three substituents, where said substituents are independently selected from F, Cl, Br, NO.sub.2, CF.sub.3, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy;
- with the proviso that R.sub.6 cannot be H when R.sub.7 is alkanoyl, benzoyl or substituted benzoyl, or COOR.sub.8 ; or a pharmaceutically suitable acid addition salt where R.sub.2 or R.sub.3 is 3-pyridyl or X is dialkylamino; or a pharmaceutically suitable metal salt when R.sub.7 is H.
- 2. A compound of claim 1 R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 independently=CF.sub.3, CF.sub.2 H or CF.sub.2 Cl; or R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 taken together=--CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 --; R.sub.6 =H; and R.sub.7 =H.
- 3. A compound of claim 1 where R.sub.1 =H or methyl.
- 4. A compound of claim 1 where R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently= ##STR39## where X=Cl, F, methoxy or dimethylamino and Y=H.
- 5. A compound of claim 1 where R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are both CF.sub.3.
- 6. A compound of claim 1 where R.sub.6 =H or methyl.
- 7. A compound of claim 1 where R.sub.7 =H.
- 8. A compound of claim 1 where
- R.sub.1 =H or methyl;
- R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently= ##STR40## where X=Cl, F, methoxy or dimethylamino and Y=H; R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are both CF.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.6 =H or methyl; and
- R.sub.7 =H.
- 9. The compound of claim 1 which is 4,5-bis(4-fluorophenyl)-.alpha.,.alpha.-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-methanol.
- 10. The compound of claim 1 which is 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-.alpha.,.alpha.-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-methanol.
- 11. The compound of claim 1 which is 4,5-bis-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-methyl-.alpha., .alpha.-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-methanol.
- 12. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 1.
- 13. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 2.
- 14. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 3.
- 15. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 4.
- 16. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 5.
- 17. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 6.
- 18. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 7.
- 19. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 8.
- 20. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of the compound of claim 9.
- 21. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of the compound of claim 10.
- 22. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antiinflammatory amount of the compound of claim 11.
- 23. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 1.
- 24. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 2.
- 25. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 3.
- 26. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 4.
- 27. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 5.
- 28. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 6.
- 29. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 7.
- 30. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of a compound of claim 8.
- 31. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of the compound of claim 9.
- 32. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of the compound of claim 10.
- 33. A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises administering to the mammal an antiinflammatory amount of the compound of claim 11.
