Claims
- 1. 3H-naphtho[1,2-d]imidazole derivative having the following formula ##STR11## wherein R stands for (C.sub.1-6)alkyl, (C.sub.3-6)alkenyl, (C.sub.3-6)alkynyl or (C.sub.3-7)cycloalkyl, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each independently may represent hydrogen, halogen, (C.sub.1-4)alkyl, (C.sub.1-4)alkylthio, (C.sub.1-4)alkoxy or halo(C.sub.1-4)alkoxy, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, each independently represents hydrogen or (C.sub.1-4)alkoxy, R.sub.5 stands for hydrogen, (C.sub.1-4)alkyl, (C.sub.3-4)alkoxy, carboxymethoxy, [carbo(C.sub.1-4)alkoxy]methoxy or (C.sub.2-4)alkanoylamino and R.sub.6 is hydrogen or R.sub.4 and R.sub.6 taken together may represent a methylenedioxy radical, with the proviso that when R.sub.5 is hydrogen at least one of R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 must be different from hydrogen; or a non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 2. A compound as in claim 1 wherein R stands for (C.sub.1-6)alkyl, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, each independently, represent hydrogen or (C.sub.1-4)alkoxy, R.sub.5 stands for hydrogen, (C.sub.1-4)alkyl, (C.sub.3-4)alkoxy, carboxymethoxy, [carbo(C.sub.1-4)alkoxy]methoxy or (C.sub.2-4)alkanoylamino, and R.sub.6 is hydrogen or R.sub.4 and R.sub.6 taken together may represent a methylenedioxy radical, with the proviso that when R.sub.5 is hydrogen, at least one of R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 must be different from hydrogen; or a non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
- 3. An antimicrobial composition which comprises from about 0.1 percent by weight to about 10 percent by weight of a compound of formula I ##STR12## wherein R, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, and R.sub.6 are as defined in claim 1, or a salt therewith of a pharmaceutically acceptable acid in admixture with a topical pharmaceutical carrier.
- 4. A method for combatting microbial infections in animals which comprises topically applying to the mucous membranes or to the skin of an animal in need thereof an effective amount of a composition of claim 3 one or more times a day.
