Claims
- 1. A method for treating an animal having a microbial infection comprising administering to the site of the infection an antimicrobial composition comprising the following distinct components:
- (a) an antimicrobial agent comprising benzalkonium chloride present in a therapeutically effective, non-toxic quantity of about 0.05-5 wt %;
- (b) allantoin, present in an amount of about 0.05 to 5 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition;
- (c) about 0.1 to 20 weight percent surfactant, comprising at least one nonionic, cationic or amphoteric surfactant;
- (d) at least one preservative for preserving the antimicrobial composition; and
- (e) at least about 60 weight percent water.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said benzalkonium chloride is present in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the surfactant comprises a cationic surfactant, said cationic surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant, said nonionic surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 8 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the surfactant comprises an amphoteric surfactant, said amphoteric surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 8 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein said infection site comprises the human nail.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said infection site comprises the skin of a human.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said infection site comprises a mucous membrane of a human.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein said infection site comprises the scalp of a human.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein said infection site comprises the hooves, claws, beaks, skin, or fur of animals.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the animal is a mammal.
- 12. A method for treating mycotic or bacterial infections of human nails and adjacent tissue, comprising:
- (a) administering to the site of the infection an antimicrobial composition comprising the following distinct components:
- (1) from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent benzalkonium chloride;
- (2) from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent allantoin;
- (3) about 0.1 to 20 weight percent of a surfactant, comprising at least one nonionic, cationic or amphoteric surfactant;
- (4) at least one preservative for preserving the antimicrobial composition; and
- (5) at least about 60 weight percent water; and
- (b) repeating said administration of said antimicrobial composition to said site to reduce said infection wherein all weight percentages are based on the total weight of said antimicrobial composition.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the surfactant comprises a cationic surfactant, said cationic surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 14. The method of claim 12 wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant, said nonionic surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 8 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 15. The method of claim 12 wherein the surfactant comprises an amphoteric surfactant, said amphoteric surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 8 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 16. The method of claim 12 wherein the antimicrobial composition further comprises propylene glycol in an amount up to about 15 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition.
- 17. The method of claim 12 wherein the antimicrobial composition comprises at least about 70 weight percent water.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the benzalkonium chloride is present in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 2.5 weight percent, and the allantoin is present in an amount of from about 0.25 to about 2.5 weight percent, both based on the antimicrobial composition.
- 19. The method of claim 12 wherein the antimicrobial composition comprises at least about 80 weight percent water.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein the benzalkonium chloride is present in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 2.5 weight percent, and the allantoin is present in an amount of from about 0.25 to about 2.5 weight percent, both based on the antimicrobial composition.
- 21. A method for treating mycotic or bacterial infections of human nails and adjacent tissue, comprising:
- (a) administering to the site of the infection an antimicrobial composition comprising the following distinct components:
- (1) from about 0.10 to about 2.5 weight percent benzalkonium chloride;
- (2) from about 0.25 to about 2.5 weight percent allantoin;
- (3) about 0.1 to 20 weight percent of a surfactant, comprising at least one nonionic, cationic or amphoteric surfactant;
- (4) from about 0.05 to about 0.5 weight percent diazolidinyl urea; and
- (5) at least about 60 weight percent water; and
- (b) repeating said administration of said antimicrobial composition to said site to reduce said infection.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the surfactant comprises a cationic surfactant, said cationic surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 2.5 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 23. The method of claim 21 wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant, said nonionic surfactant being present in an amount of from about 1 to about 6 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 24. The method of claim 21 wherein the surfactant comprises an amphoteric surfactant, said amphoteric surfactant being present in an amount of from about 1 to about 6 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 25. The method of claim 21 wherein the antimicrobial composition further comprises propylene glycol in an amount of from about 0.25 to about 12 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition.
- 26. The method of claim 21 wherein the antimicrobial composition comprises at least about 70 weight percent water.
- 27. The method of claim 21 wherein the antimicrobial composition comprises at least about 80 weight percent water.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein the antimicrobial composition further comprises propylene glycol in an amount of from about 0.25 to about 12 weight percent, a cationic surfactant present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 2.5 weight percent, and a nonionic surfactant present in an amount of from about 1 to about 6 weight percent, all based on the antimicrobial composition.
- 29. A method for treating an animal having a microbial infection, comprising:
- (a) administering to the site of the infection an antimicrobial composition comprising the following distinct components:
- (1) at least one antimicrobial agent comprising at least one quaternary ammonium compound, wherein the quaternary ammonium compound content is a therapeutically effective, non-toxic quantity of between 0.05 and 5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition;
- (2) allantoin, present in an amount of about 0.05 to 5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition;
- (3) about 0.1 to 20 weight percent surfactant, comprising at least one nonionic, cationic or amphoteric surfactant;
- (4) at least one preservative for preserving the antimicrobial composition; and
- (5) at least about 60 weight percent water; and
- (b) periodically repeating the administration of said antimicrobial composition wherein all weight percentages are based on the total weight of said antimicrobial composition.
- 30. The method of claim 29 wherein the surfactant comprises a cationic surfactant, said cationic surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 31. The method of claim 29 wherein the surfactant comprises an amphoteric surfactant, said amphoteric surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 8 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 32. The method of claim 29 wherein the antimicrobial composition further comprises from 0.25-12 weight percent propylene glycol.
- 33. The method of claim 29 wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises benzalkonium chloride.
- 34. The method of claim 29 wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises benzalkonium chloride, present in an amount of from 0.1 to 2.5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition.
- 35. A method for treating mycotic or bacterial infections of human nails and adjacent tissue, comprising:
- (a) administering to the site of the infection an antimicrobial composition comprising the following distinct components:
- (1) at least one quaternary ammonium compound, where the quaternary ammonium compound content is between 0.05 and 5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition;
- (2) from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent allantoin;
- (3) about 0.1 to 20 weight percent surfactant, comprising at least one nonionic, cationic or amphoteric surfactant;
- (4) at least one preservative for preserving the antimicrobial composition; and
- (5) at least about 60 weight percent water; and
- (b) repeating said administration of said antimicrobial composition to said site to reduce said infection wherein all weight percentages are based on the total weight of said antimicrobial composition.
- 36. The method of claim 35 wherein the allantoin is present in an amount of from about 0.25 to about 2.5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition.
- 37. The method of claim 35 wherein the surfactant comprises a cationic surfactant, said cationic surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 38. The method of claim 35 wherein the surfactant comprises an amphoteric surfactant, said amphoteric surfactant being present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 8 weight percent of said antimicrobial composition.
- 39. The method of claim 35 wherein the antimicrobial composition further comprises from 0.25-12 weight percent propylene glycol.
- 40. The method of claim 35 wherein the antimicrobial composition comprises a least about 80 weight percent water.
- 41. The method of claim 40 wherein the allantoin is present in an amount of from about 0.25 to about 2.5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition.
- 42. A method for treating mycotic or bacterial infections of human nails and adjacent tissue, comprising:
- (a) administering to the site of the infection an antimicrobial composition consisting essentially of the following distinct components:
- (1) at least one quaternary ammonium compound, where the quaternary ammonium compound content is between 0.05 and 5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition;
- (2) from about 0.05 to about 5 weight percent allantoin;
- (3) from about 0.1 to 20 weight percent surfactant, comprising at least one nonionic, cationic or amphoteric surfactant;
- (4) at least one preservative for preserving the antimicrobial composition; and
- (5) at least about 70 weight percent water; and
- (6) optionally, from about 0.25 to 12 weight percent propylene glycol; and
- (b) repeating said administration of said antimicrobial composition to said site to reduce said infection wherein all weight percentages are based on the total weight of said antimicrobial composition.
- 43. The method of claim 42 wherein the water is present in the antimicrobial composition in an amount of at least about 80 weight percent.
- 44. The method of claim 43 wherein the allantoin is present in an amount of from about 0.25 to about 2.5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition.
- 45. The method of claim 43 wherein the quaternary ammonium compound comprises benzalkonium chloride present in an amount of from 0.05 to 5 weight percent of the antimicrobial composition.
