Claims
- 1. An antioxidant-containing derivative of an organic compound, which derivative has the following formula: ##STR17## wherein Q, which can be the same or different, is an antioxidant moiety or --R.sub.1 with the provisos that (a) at least one Q is an antioxidant moiety and (b) the antioxidant moieties are present in an amount up to about 20% by weight of the derivative;
- Y can be the same or different and comprises ##STR18## R.sub.1, which can be the same or different, is a cyclic or acyclic, an unsubstituted or a hydroxy, carboxy, or halogen substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynl, or oxyalkylene group; or a sulfur, nitrogen or phosphorus derivative of an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynl, or oxyalkylene group;
- R.sub.2 can be the same or different and hydrogen in addition to those R.sub.1 groups described above, and n.sub.1 =1-20.
- 2. The compound according to claim 1 where Y comprises ##STR19##
- 3. The compound according to claim 2 wherein R.sub.2 comprises a hydrogen.
- 4. The compound according to claim 3 wherein the antioxidant is selected from a group consisting of DTBH acid, dialkyl phosphonates, diaryl phosphonates, trialkyl phosphites, or triaryl phosphites and R.sub.1 is a coconut oil residue having a chain length of C.sub.6 -C.sub.18.
- 5. The antioxidant-containing compound according to claim 1 wherein the antioxidant is selected from a group consisting of di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamic acid and derivatives thereof, dialkyl phosphonates, diaryl phosphonates, trialkyl phosphites, triaryl phosphites, gallic acid and derivatives thereof, ascorbic acid and derivatives thereof, or citric acid and derivatives thereof.
- 6. The antioxidant-containing compound according to claim 1 wherein the antioxidant is a hindered phenolic antioxidant.
- 7. The antioxidant-containing compound according to claim 1 which is a derivative of a glyceride, amide, or phospholipid.
- 8. The antioxidant-containing compound according to claim 1 which is a derivative of a glyceride selected from a group consisting of natural oils and their hydrogenated and/or alkoxylated analogs.
- 9. An antioxidant-containing compound according to claim 1 which is produced by reacting a first compound with a second medium where the first compound comprises an antioxidant containing a group capable of reacting with a reactive group in the second medium and the second medium is selected from a group consisting of coconut oil, hydrogenated coconut oil, alkoxylated castor oil, and hydrogenated, alkoxylated castor oil.
- 10. The compound according to claim 1 wherein the second medium is coconut oil.
- 11. The compound according to claim 1 wherein the second medium is hydrogenated coconut oil.
- 12. The compound according to claim 1 wherein the second medium is alkoxylated castor oil.
- 13. The compound according to claim 1 wherein the second medium is hydrogenated, alkoxylated castor oil.
- 14. The compound according to claim 1 wherein the first compound comprises ##STR20## where Q.sub.1 is an alkyl or an oxyalkylene group, Q.sub.2 is H, or an alkyl group and Q.sub.3 is --OH or --SH and R is an alkyl, aryl, alkyloxy.
- 15. The compound according to claim 1 wherein the first compound is selected from a group consisting of ##STR21##
- 16. The compound according to claim 1 wherein the antioxidant is present in an amount which is effective to provide a superstable lubricant.
- 17. The compound according to claim 1 wherein the first compound is present in the reaction mixture in an amount greater than 0 but not greater than about 20% by weight,
- 18. The compound according to claim 1 wherein a reaction occurs in the presence of a catalyst.
- 19. The compound according to claim 18 wherein the catalyst is selected from a group consisting of sodium methylate, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium potassium metal alloy, or calcium oxide.
- 20. The compound according to claim 18 wherein the catalyst is present in an amount of about 0.02-2% by weight of the reaction mixture.
