Claims
- 1. In a radio communication system at least selectably operable to broadcast data to a mobile station, an improvement of apparatus for facilitating effectuation of the broadcast of the data pursuant to a hierarchical multimedia service, the data defined in terms of data-types and each data-type defined in terms of data characteristics, said apparatus comprising:
a broadcast service message generator coupled to receive at least indications of a data-type, and a data-characteristic thereof, of a data portion of the data to be communicated pursuant to the hierarchical multimedia service, said broadcast service message generator for generating a broadcast service message, the broadcast service message having a first field, populated with a value representative of the data-type, and a second field, populated with a value representative of the data-characteristic.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the radio communication system defines a paging channel by which to page the mobile station and wherein the broadcast service message generated by said broadcast service message generator is sent upon the paging channel to the mobile station.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the radio communication system is defined in terms of logical layers, the logical layers including a physical layer and at least one upper-level layer, and wherein said broadcast service message generator is embodied at the upper-level layer.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the at least one upper-level layer comprises a link layer and wherein said broadcast service message generator is embodied at the link layer.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the radio communication system comprises a network infrastructure having a radio network controller and wherein said broadcast service message generator is embodied at the radio network controller.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the data-type in terms of which the data is defined comprises a first data-type, a second data type, and at least a third data-type, and wherein the first field is of a field-length at least great enough to identify the data to be one of the first data-type, the second data-type, and the third data-type.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the radio communication system comprises a cellular communication system operable generally pursuant to a CDMA 2000 operating specification that defines BSR_ID values and wherein the value populating the first field of the broadcast service message generated by the broadcast service message generator comprises a BSR_ID value.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the data characteristics by which at least a first BSR_ID value is defined is one of a first data-characteristic value and at least a second data-characteristic value.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the data characteristics by which at least a first data-type of the data-types is defined the value of which is populated in the second field of the broadcast service message formed by said broadcast service message generator is one of a first data-characteristics value and at least a second data-characteristic value.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the first data-characteristic value is representative of data of a first quality-level, wherein the second data-characteristic value is representative of data of a second quality-level.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein data-types, in terms of which the data is defined, comprise video data, radio data, and textual data, wherein the data characteristics, in terms of which the data-types are defined, comprise a low-quality level, a medium-quality level, and a high-quality level, and wherein the broadcast service message, each data characteristic defining a layer component level of an associated data-type, and wherein the broadcast service message generated by said broadcast service message generator identifies the data-type and layer component associated therewith.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the radio communication system further defines a MAC (Medium Access Control) layer at which PDVs (Packet Data Units) are formed, and wherein the first field and the second field, populated with values of the data-type and the data characteristics, respectively, of the broadcast service message formed by said broadcast service message generator and embedded in the PDVs.
- 13. In a method of communicating in a radio communication system at least selectably operable to broadcast data to a mobile station, an improvement of a method for facilitating effectuation of the broadcast of the data pursuant to a hierarchical multimedia service, the data defined in terms of data-types and each data-type defined in terms of data characteristics, said method comprising:
forming a broadcast service message, formatted to include a first field and a second field; populating the first field of the broadcast service message with a value representative of the data-type of a data portion of the data to be communicated pursuant to the hierarchical multimedia service; and populating the second field of the broadcast service message with a value representative of the data-characteristic of the data portion of the data of the data-type identified in the first field.
- 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising the operation of broadcasting the broadcast service message upon a paging channel to a mobile station.
- 15. The method of claim 13 further comprising the operation, a the mobile station, of selectably operating upon the data portion associated with the broadcast service message.
- 16. The method of claim 15 further comprising the operation, prior to said operation of selectably operating, of selecting whether to operate upon the data portion, selection of whether to operate upon the data portion made responsive to at least one factor.
