Claims
- 1. A method of measuring air-contamination within a hydrodynamic bearing of a disc drive, comprising;
rotating a disc drive motor; providing at least one first measurement of one or more disc drive input/output signals responsive to air-contamination within the hydrodynamic bearing; comparing at least one second measurement of the one or more disc drive input/output signals to the at least one first measurement taken at different atmospheric pressures around the disc drive; and determining if the difference between the first and second measurements is indicative of at least one unacceptable disc drive operational condition.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more disc drive input/output signals comprises a first disc drive motor input signal.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the disc drive motor input signal comprises, voltage, current, power, and combinations thereof.
- 4. The method of claim 2, further comprising prior to providing the at least one first measurement, providing a first vacuum pressure.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein comparing comprises establishing at the first vacuum pressure one or more threshold disc drive motor input signal values, wherein the unacceptable disc drive operational condition exists when the disc drive motor input signal about exceeds, at a second vacuum pressure, the one or more disc drive motor input signal threshold values.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first input/output signal is at least one disc drive motor current value associated with an acceptable amount of air-contamination within the hydrodynamic bearing.
- 7. The method of claim 6, further comprising providing a vacuum to the disc drive and measuring the at least one second input/output signal, wherein the at least one second input/output signal is a change in the at least one disc drive motor current value.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein determining comprises establishing one or more current threshold values, wherein the unacceptable disc drive operational condition exists when the at least one second input/output signal about exceeds the one or more current threshold values.
- 9. A disc drive hydrodynamic bearing air-contamination testing apparatus, comprising:
a vacuum chamber adapted to hold at least one disc drive therein; an air-detecting apparatus adapted to detect at least one input/output signal change of the at least one disc drive when the pressure within the vacuum chamber is changed from a first pressure value to a second pressure value while the at least one disc drive is activated within the vacuum chamber.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the air-detecting apparatus comprises a meter adapted to measure at least one input/output signal of the disc drive.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the at least one at least one input/output signal comprises current, voltage, power, and combinations thereof.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the air-detecting apparatus comprises a meter adapted to measure at least one input/output signal change, the pressure on the hydrodynamic bearing being changed between the first and second pressure.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the meter comprises a current meter, oscilloscope, power meter, volt meter, network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, and combinations thereof.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the at least one value are selected from current, voltage, power, and combinations thereof.
- 15. An apparatus for measuring air-contamination within a disc drive hydrodynamic bearing, comprising:
means for rotating a disc drive motor; and means for detecting, during the rotation of the disc drive motor, at least one disc drive input/output signal responsive as a function of air-contamination within the hydrodynamic bearing between at least a first and second external pressure on the hydrodynamic bearing.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the means for detecting comprises a monitor means to monitor a first input/output signal of at least one component at the first external pressure.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the monitor means monitors a second input/output signal of the at least one component at the second external pressure, wherein the second input/output signal is unacceptable if the second input/output signal about exceeds at least one threshold value.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the input/output signal is selected from the disc drive current, voltage, and combinations thereof.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the means for detecting the at least one component input/output signal change comprises a meter adapted to measure at least one input/output signal of the disc drive.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the meter comprises a current meter, oscilloscope, power meter, volt meter, network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, and combinations thereof.
