Claims
- 1. A combination shower and bath unit, comprising:
- an enclosure including a bathtub with walls upstanding from both ends and a rearward side thereof to form a stall;
- said bathtub having a raised seat portion, a back portion extending generally upwardly from said seat portion, and a foot portion disposed below and forwardly of said seat portion; said seat, back and foot portions having an anatomical contour which forms a chair shape for supporting an invalid in a seated position in the unit;
- said bathtub having a lateral opening in one side thereof with sufficient size to permit invalid ingress and egress therethrough, and being oriented substantially parallel with the sides of said seat portion;
- a door selectively closing said bathtub opening;
- means for forming a seal between said door and said bathtub when said door is in a closed position which is leakproof when said bathtub is filled with water to a level substantially above a base portion of said opening for immersal bathing of an invalid;
- at least one shower head mounted on one of said stall walls and oriented toward the seated invalid, whereby said unit is capable of both immersal bathing and showering the invalid for hygiene and therapy;
- a pair of tracks supported on said stall end walls at opposing sides of said door, and extending vertically upwardly above said bathtub and rearwardly along ghe upper edges of said stall end wall over said bathtub; and
- means for slideably mounting said door on said tracks for translating said door vertically into the closed position, and rotating said door as it is raised from the closed position into a substantially horizontal, overhead storage position directly over said bathtub.
- 2. A combination shower and bath unit as set forth in claim 1, including:
- a plurality of said shower heads mounted about said stall walls for showering the invalid from three sides simultaneously.
- 3. A combination shower and bath unit as set forth in claim 2, wherein:
- said seat portion includes a concave channel centrally disposed at the forward edge thereof for bathing the perineal area.
- 4. A combination shower and bath unit as set forth in claim 3, including:
- a spray nozzle mounted in said channel and oriented for cleaning the perineal area of the invalid.
- 5. A combination shower and bath unit as set forth in claim 4, wherein:
- said tracks have a horizontal segment in which said door is supported in the storage position; and said horizontal track segments are disposed at an elevation which retains said door slightly above the height of the average invalid and attendant.
- 6. A combination shower and bath unit as set forth in claim 5, wherein:
- said bathtub includes integrally formed armrests, one of which is disposed on the interior surface of said door.
- 7. A bathing apparatus for invalids, comprising:
- a bathtub having a seat portion disposed at an elevation substantially commensurate with the seat of a conventional wheelchair, a back portion extending generally upwardly from said seat portion, and a foot portion disposed below and forwardly of said seat portion; said seat, back and foot portions having outer side edges, and an anatomical contour which forms a chair shape for supporting an invalid in a seated position in said bathtub; said bathtub having opposed sides which extend upwardly from said seat and foot portions and form a closed reservoir for partially immersing the seated invalid; one of said bathtub sides being bodily removable from said bathtub to expose an opening defined by and flush with the outer side edges of said seat, back and foot portions, said one bathtub side forming a door for selectively closing said opening;
- means for forming a seal between said door and said bathtub when said door is in a closed position which is leakproof when said bathtub is filled with water to a level substantially above the outer edge of said foot portion for immersal bathing of the invalid; and
- means for removing said door to fully access said opening and fully expose the outer side edges of said seat, back and foot portions, whereby when a wheelchair is parked parallel with said bathtub, beside the seat portion thereof, an attendant can laterally shift a patient from the wheelchair directly onto the bathtub seat portion by swingingly translating the patient along a slightly arcuate, substantially horizontal path with a natural, continuous and unrestrained lateral motion, which permits the attendant to keep his feet fixed on the floor, and maintain the weight of the invalid close to his body.
- 8. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 7, wherein:
- said opening includes a laterally inset area at the side edge of said foot portion which is disposed inwardly of the side edge of said seat portion to provide access for at least one leg of the attendant to facilitate the shifting of the invalid to and from said seat portion.
- 9. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 8, wherein:
- said door carries a contoured portion of the bathtub interior thereon.
- 10. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 9, wherein:
- said bathtub includes a base with a toe space to further facilitate invalid transport.
- 11. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 7, wherein:
- said seat portion includes a concave channel centrally disposed at the forward edge thereof for bathing the perineal area.
- 12. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 11, including:
- a spray nozzle mounted in said channel and oriented for cleaning the perineal area of the invalid.
- 13. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 7, wherein:
- said door includes a concave notch in the upper edge thereof at a position disposed above said foot portion to facilitate access to the feet and legs of the invalid.
- 14. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 7, including:
- a plurality of shower heads mounted in an upper portion of said bathtub and oriented toward the invalid.
- 15. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 7, wherein:
- said bathtub includes integrally formed armrests, one of which is disposed on the interior surface of said door.
- 16. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 15, wherein:
- said door removing means comprises a pair of inverted, generally L-shaped tracks and means for slideably mounting said door on said tracks; said tracks being supported on opposite sides of said door and oriented to translate said door vertically into the closed position, and rotate said door as it is raised from the closed position into a substantially horizontal, overhead storage position directly over said bathtub.
- 17. A bathing apparatus for invalids, comprising:
- a bathtub having a seat portion, a back portion extending generally upwardly from said seat portion, and a foot portion disposed below and forwardly of said seat portion; said seat, back and foot portions having an anatomical contour which forms a chair shape for supporting an invalid in a seated position in said bathtub;
- said seat portion including a concave trough centrally disposed adjacent a forward edge thereof, which is anatomically shaped and positioned to expose a perineal area of a seated bather; and
- a spray nozzle mounted in said trough, and oriented to spray onto the perineal area of the seated bather for cleaning the same.
- 18. A bathing apparatus as set forth in claim 17, wherein:
- said spray nozzle is mounted on one side of said trough, and includes a discharge orifice oriented generally upwardly.
