Claims
- 1. A method for controlling operation of a centrifugal cooling apparatus including at least one of an evaporator, a centrifugal compressor having a magnetic bearing system, a condenser, and an expansion device, wherein the centrifugal compressor has an adjustable speed motor, the method comprising:
monitoring an operating condition of the magnetic bearing system; and maintaining compressor flow stability based upon the operating condition of the magnetic bearing system.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of monitoring the operating condition of the magnetic bearing system comprises monitoring an output from a magnetic bearing sensor.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the output from the magnetic bearing sensor is one of a bearing position output, a bearing stabilizing current, and a bearing stabilizing power level.
- 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the step of maintaining compressor flow stability comprises turning the compressor motor off and on to adjust the output level of the cooling apparatus.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of maintaining compressor flow stability comprises adjusting the speed of the motor.
- 6. The method according to claim 5, wherein the step of maintaining compressor flow stability comprises maintaining the speed of the motor as low as possible without encountering flow instability.
- 7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of maintaining compressor flow stability comprises adjusting adjustable guide vanes of the centrifugal compressor.
- 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein the guide vanes of the centrifugal compressor include inlet guide vanes and diffuser guide vanes, and the step of adjusting adjustable guide vanes of the centrifugal compressor comprises adjusting angular position of the inlet guide vanes and angular position of the diffuser guide vanes.
- 9. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of monitoring the operating condition of the magnetic bearing system comprises monitoring a single operating condition of the magnetic bearing system, and the step of maintaining compressor flow stability comprises using a single control unit to maintain compressor flow stability based upon the single operating condition of the magnetic bearing system.
- 10. A method for controlling operation of a centrifugal cooling apparatus including a centrifugal compressor having a rotor and an adjustable speed motor used to drive the rotor, and a magnetic bearing system supporting the rotor, the method comprising:
monitoring a parameter related to the operating condition of the magnetic bearing system; and maintaining compressor flow stability based on the parameter related to the operating condition of the magnetic bearing system.
- 11. The method according to claim 10, wherein the parameter is one of a bearing position, a bearing stabilizing current, and a bearing stabilizing power level.
- 12. The method according to claim 10, wherein the step of maintaining compressor flow stability includes adjusting the speed of the motor.
- 13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the step of adjusting the speed of the motor comprises maintaining the speed of the motor as low as possible without flow instability.
- 14. The method according to claim 10, wherein the step of maintaining flow stability comprises adjusting adjustable guide vanes of the centrifugal compressor.
- 15. The method according to claim 14, wherein the guide vanes of the centrifugal compressor include inlet guide vanes and diffuser guide vanes, and the step of adjusting adjustable guide vanes of the centrifugal compressor comprises adjusting angular position of the inlet guide vanes and angular position of the diffuser guide vanes.
- 16. The method according to claim 10, wherein the step of maintaining compressor flow stability comprises turning the compressor motor off and on to adjust the output level of the cooling apparatus.
