Claims
- 1. A system for controlling the formation of the surface contour of a multi-lead magnetic single-track head element having a portion, removed during surface formation, which has an electrical characteristic monitorable through said leads, wherein there are provided: a rotatable armature for fixedly retaining and continuously rotating the magnetic head about an axis passing through the surface contour, an abrasive material, relative motion between the armature and the abrasive material along the axis of the rotation of the armature bringing the head surface into contact with the abrasive material; and a stationary resistance detector, electrically connected to the rotatable magnetic head, for detecting the electrical characteristic of aforesaid head in terms of resistance; the invention being characterized by:
- a counter connected to the rotating armature for counting the number of rotations of the head and supplying a count signal upon the occurrence of a predetermined count;
- means indicating a predetermined desired limit resistance amount;
- comparison means, associated with the indicating means, resistance detector and counter operable upon the occurrence of said count signal to generate a comparision signal if the detected resistance equals or exceeds the limit resistance amount;
- means connected to said rotatable armature operable by an external start signal to initiate rotation and axial movement; and
- means connected to said rotatable armature and to said comparison means operable upon the occurrence of a comparison signal to terminate axial movement.
- 2. a system for controlling the formation of the surface contour of a single transducer by monitoring at transducer leads an electrical characteristic in terms of resistance while rotating the transducer for more than 360.degree. and bringing the transducer and a material removal device into contact, including:
- a counter connected to the rotating transducer for counting the number of rotations of the transducer and supplying a count signal upon the occurrence of a predetermined count;
- a limit register for indicating a predetermined desired limit resistance amount;
- comparison means, associated with the limit register, transducer lead and counter operable upon the occurrence of said count signal to generate a comparison signal if the detected transducer resistance equals or exceeds the limit resistance amount;
- means connected to said rotatable transducer operable by an external start signal to initiate rotation and bring the transducer and material removal device into contact; and
- means connected to said rotatable transducer and to said comparison means operable upon the occurrence of a comparison signal to bring the transducer and material removal device out of contact.
- 3. A method for controlling the formation of the surface contour of a transducer by removing a portion during surface formation while monitoring an electrical characteristic in terms of resistance during rotation of the transducer and contact between an abrasive material and the transducer, including the steps of:
- counting the number of rotations of the transducer;
- supplying a count signal upon the occurrence of a predetermined count;
- indicating a predetermined desired limit resistance amount following a count signal;
- generating a comparison signal if the detected transducer resistance equals or exceeds the limit resistance amount;
- initiating rotation and material-transducer contact; and
- terminating material-transducer contact upon the occurrence of a comparison signal.
- 4. A method of controlling the formation of the surface contour of a transducer, including the steps of:
- rotating the transducer while maintaining contact between an abrasive material and the transducer;
- counting the number of rotations of the transducer;
- supplying a count signal upon the occurrence of a predetermined count;
- monitoring an electrical characteristic of the transducer following the occurrence of a count signal;
