Claims
- 1. A wheel alignment apparatus for determining the alignment of the wheels of a vehicle in relation to a vertically movable surface upon which the vehicle wheels are disposed, said apparatus comprising:
- a first set of predetermined optical targets adapted to be mounted to wheels of a vehicle;
- a second set of predetermined optical targets disposed in a predetermined geometrical relationship with respect to the surface on which said vehicle wheels are disposed;
- at least one video camera disposed to receive images of said first optical targets and said second optical targets, each of said at least one video cameras having a field of view;
- a computer operatively connected to said at least one camera, said computer being responsive to the images of said first set of targets and to the images of said second set of targets to determine values of wheel alignment parameters of the vehicle relative to said surface on which said vehicle wheels are disposed; and
- an elevating mechanism operatively connected to the at least one video camera to raise and lower said at least one camera along a predetermined path, said elevating mechanism being responsive to vertical movement of the vertically movable surface to move said at least one camera correspondingly along said predetermined path.
- 2. The wheel alignment apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the vertically movable surface is the runway of a lift rack, said elevating mechanism being responsive to vertical movement of the lift rack from a first vertical position to a second vertical position to move said at least one camera along the predetermined path such that said first set and said second set of predetermined optical targets of the lift rack remain substantially in the same positions in the field of view of said at least one camera.
- 3. The wheel alignment apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the at least one video camera includes first and second video cameras, said first and second video cameras being mechanically coupled to the elevating mechanism such that said first and second video cameras are moved equal vertical distances by the elevating mechanism.
- 4. The wheel alignment apparatus as set forth in claim 3 wherein the first and second video cameras are disposed in a fixed geometrical relationship.
- 5. The wheel alignment apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the computer is responsive to the position of at least one target in the field of view to control the elevating mechanism to move the video camera along the predetermined path so as to maintain said at least one target at a predetermined position in the field of view.
- 6. The wheel alignment apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said at least one video camera includes first and second video cameras disposed to view opposite sides of the vehicle, at least one optical target being in a field of view of the said first video camera and at least one optical target being in a field of view of the second video camera.
- 7. The wheel alignment apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein the computer is responsive to variation in position of one of the optical targets in the corresponding field of view to detect misalignment of the runways, further including means for adjusting the geometrical orientation of the runways in response to the detected misalignment.
- 8. A wheel alignment apparatus for determining the alignment of the wheels of a vehicle in relation to a vertically movable surface upon which the vehicle wheels are disposed, said apparatus comprising:
- a set of predetermined optical targets adapted to be mounted to wheels of a vehicle;
- at least one video camera disposed to receive images of said optical targets, each of said at least one video cameras having a field of view;
- a computer operatively connected to said at least one camera, said computer being responsive to the images of said set of targets to determine values of wheel alignment parameters of the vehicle relative to said surface on which said vehicle wheels are disposed; and
- an elevating mechanism to raise and lower said at least one camera along a predetermined path an amount such that said predetermined optical targets remain substantially in the same position in the field of view of said at least one camera.
- 9. The wheel alignment apparatus as set forth in claim 8 wherein the elevating mechanism is responsive to movement of the vertically movable surface to automatically move said at least one video camera a corresponding amount along the predetermined path.
- 10. The wheel alignment apparatus as set forth in claim 8 wherein the elevating mechanism is manually operable.
