Claims
- 1. Apparatus for forming a portion of a tube on a toroidal core from elastomeric sheet material comprising:
- frame means;
- a toroidal core support means operatively associated with the frame means for supporting the toroidal core;
- means operatively associated with the frame means for positioning and supporting a sheet of elastomeric material adjacent the so-supported core along one side of the so-supported core;
- means for depositing elastomeric material of the sheet thereof onto the so-supported toroidal core along a continuous path thereof; and
- means for selectively applying force to an annular portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core to urge an annular portion of elastomeric material against the so-supporting core.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for depositing elastomeric material of said sheet thereof against the toroidal core comprise means for selectively moving said support means relative to a positioned and supported sheet of elastomeric material to bring the so-supported core toward the elastomeric material of the sheet thereof.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the means for depositing elastomeric material on the core further comprise means comprising said sheet of elastomeric material and defining a closed gas chamber within which the core is positionable so that movement of the support means to bring the so-supported core toward and into contact with the sheet of elastomeric material and to further move the core into the sheet of elastomeric material moves elastomeric material to effectively increase the size of the gas chamber to lower the pressure therein to further urge elastomeric material of the sheet onto the core.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the means for positioning and supporting the sheet of elastomeric material comprise a first table portion mounted relative to the frame means and on which the outer peripheral edge of the sheet material is supported, said first table portion being positioned generally outwardly of the outer periphery of the core, and a second table portion for supporting the center portion of the sheet of elastomeric material, positioned generally inwardly of the inner periphery of the core.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 3 and means for selectively varying the volume of said closed gas chamber within which the core is positionable.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 and further comprising tank means, wherein the means for selectively varying the volume of said closed gas chamber comprise means for selectively allowing introduction of liquid to and removal of liquid from said tank means, the means defining said gas chamber further comprising said tank means and liquid to effectively vary the volume of said chamber which may enclose gas therein.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for selectively applying force to an annular portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core comprises an elastomeric ring, said ring having a continuous annular surface, and means for selectively moving the continuous annular surface of said elastomeric ring into contact with a portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core, and selectively moving said continuous annular surface of said elastomeric ring away from said portion of elastomeric material.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the elastomeric ring is placed under tension through elongation thereof along its length to move the annular surface portion thereof outwardly into contact with a portion of the elastomeric material.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the elastomeric ring is placed under compression along its length to move the annular surface portion thereof inwardly into contact with a portion of the elastomeric material.
- 10. Apparatus for forming a portion of a tube on a toroidal core from elastomeric sheet material comprising:
- frame means;
- a toroidal core;
- support means operatively associated with the frame means for supporting the toroidal core;
- means operatively associated with frame means for positioning and supporting a sheet of elastomeric material adjacent the so-supported core along one side of the so-supported core;
- means for depositing elastomeric material of the sheet thereof onto the so-supported toroidal core along a continuous path thereof;
- means for selectively applying force to a first annular portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core comprising a first elastomeric ring, said first elastomeric ring having a continuous annular surface, and means for selectively moving the continuous annular surface of said first elastomeric ring into contact with a portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core, and selectively moving said continuous annular surface of said first elastomeric ring away from the portion of elastomeric material associated with the core; and
- means for selectively applying force to a second annular portion of elastomeric material associated with the core comprising a second elastomeric ring, said second elastomeric ring having a continuous annular surface, and means for selectively moving the continuous annular surface of said second elastomeric ring into contact with another portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core, and selectively moving said continuous annular surface of said second elastomeric ring away from another portion of elastomeric material associated with the core.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the means for depositing elastomeric material of the sheet thereof onto the so-supported toroidal core along a continuous path thereof comprises means for depositing elastomeric material along one side of the core, and along the inner and outer peripheries thereof, and means for positioning the first elastomeric ring about the outer periphery of the core, and for positioning the second elastomeric ring within the inner periphery of the core, wherein the first elastomeric ring is placed under compression along its length to move the annular surface portion thereof inwardly into contact with a portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core, and wherein the second elastomeric ring is placed under tension through elongation thereof along its length to move the annular surface portion thereof outwardly into contact with another portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the means for selectively positioning the elastomeric rings comprise carriage means movable relatively toward and away from the so-supported core, a first plurality of link means pivotally mounted relative to the carriage means, and a second plurality of link means pivotally mounted relative to the carriage means, each of said second plurality of link means being disposed inwardly of an associated one of said first plurality of link means toward the axis of the toroidal core, the first elastomeric ring being mounted relative to respective extended ends of the first plurality of link means, the second elastomeric ring being mounted relative to respective extended ends of the second plurality of link means, and cylinder means operatively associated with each associated pair of first and second link means, whereby extension and retraction of such cylinder means moves the first and second elastomeric rings respectively toward and away from elastomeric material associated with the core, and further comprising means for selectively raising and lowering the carriage means and elastomeric rings therewith relatively toward and away from the so-supported core.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10 and further comprising a first annular knife element operatively associated with said support means and adjacent the outer periphery of a so-supported core, and a second annular knife element operatively associated with said support means and adjacent the inner periphery of the so-supported core, and means for selectively moving the first and second annular knife elements relative to the support means and core supported thereon into contact with elastomeric material not deposited on the core.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the first annular knife element is brought into contact with elastomeric material not deposited on the core to pass the first-knife-contacted elastomeric material against the first elastomeric ring with the continuous annular surface of said first elastomeric ring in contact with a portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core, and wherein the second annular knife element is brought into contact with elastomeric material not deposited on the core to press the second-knife-contacted elastomeric material against the second elastomeric ring with the continuous annular surface of the second elastomeric ring in contact with another portion of the elastomeric material associated with the core.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 and further comprising means for heating said first and second knife means.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 14 and further comprising mounting means movably mounted relative to the support means and movable relatively toward and away from the so-supported core, and means interconnecting the first knife element and mounting means and second knife element and mounting means, respectively, for allowing movement of the first and second knife elements relative to the mounting means relatively toward and away from the so-supported core, and resilient spring means associated with the first and second knife elements and mounting means for urging the first and second knife elements relatively toward the so-supported core.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 10 and further comprising mounting means movably mounted relative to the support means and movable relatively toward and away from the so-supported core, and means interconnecting the first elastomeric ring and mounting means, and second elastomeric ring and mounting means, respectively, for allowing movement of the first and second elastomeric rings relative to the mounting means relatively toward and away from the so-supported core, and resilient spring means associated with the first and second elastomeric rings and mounting means for urging the first and second elastomeric rings relatively toward the so-supported core.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 and further comprising first and second annular knife elements engageable with elastomeric material not deposited on the core.
