Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming a frame member from an elongated cylindrical tube blank having opposed ends, comprising:
- first station means for delivering the tube blanks one-at-a-time from a bulk loaded position to a subsequent station means;
- second station means for sealing the ends of the blank wherein said sealing means includes a pair of cylindrical sealing tools each defining an axial bore having an inside diameter slightly greater than the outside diameter of the ends of the tube blank, each of the tools having an o-ring mounted within its bore and being adapted to sealingly engage with the end of the blank which is telescopically received therewithin, means for applying an internal hydraulic pressure to the blank by filling the interior of the entire blank with hydraulic fluid, means for tangent bending the internally pressurized blank, and means for preforming the internally pressurized blank into a preformed tube having a desired plan view configuration;
- third station means having a mutually cooperating punch and die, and means for applying an internal hydraulic pressure to the preformed tube and compressing the internally pressurized preformed tube between said punch and die to form a frame member having a desired elevational view configuration and a desired varying cross-sectional configuration; and
- transfer means for transferring said preformed tube from said second station means to said third station means.
- 2. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 1 wherein said tools are adapted to be simultaneously telescopically extended over the opposing ends of the tube blank, simultaneously sealing the ends and compressing the contents of the tube blank and the bores.
- 3. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 2 wherein said second station means further includes a tub filled with a liquid bath and wherein both said tube blank and the tools are completely submerged in said bath before said sealing and compressing by said tools.
- 4. The apparatus for forming a frame of claim 3 wherein said tools are adapted to remain coaxial with the ends of said tube blank during said tangent bending and said preforming of the tube blank.
- 5. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 1 wherein said second station means includes a base upon which is mounted tangent bending means for bending the tube blank, said bending means including a wiper shoe adapted to substantially roll about a side of the blank, bending the blank about an inner die.
- 6. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 5 wherein said second station means further includes:
- a wing pivotally mounted to said base to rotate about an axis between an open and a closed position, said wing having an anchor block fixed thereto;
- a pinion disposed above said wing, coaxial with said axis and fixed to said base; and
- wherein said shoe defines a geared rack for meshing with said pinion and is disposed atop said wing and between said pinion and said anchor block to rotate about said pinion and slide against said anchor block when said wing rotates between said open and closed positions.
- 7. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 6 wherein said shoe defines a first semicylindrical mold cavity facing said axis, wherein the inner die of said second station means defines a second semicylindrical, horizontally arcuate mold cavity which is horizontally aligned with said first cavity, wherein said shoe and said inner die are adapted to trap the blank between said first and second cavities and when said wing is in its open position and said wing is adapted to rotate about said axis causing said shoe to tangent bend the blank about said inner die.
- 8. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 7 wherein said base is the base of a tub which is filled with a liquid bath to a level above said first and second cavities and wherein said second station means further includes for simultaneously sealing the ends of the tube blank and applying the internal hydraulic pressure to the blank.
- 9. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 8 wherein said sealing means includes a pair of cylindrical sealing tools each defining an axial bore having an inside diameter slightly greater than the outside diameter of the ends of the tube blank, each of said tools having an o-ring mounted within its bore and being adapted to sealingly engage with the end of a tube blank which is telescopically received therewithin.
- 10. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 9 wherein said tools are adapted to be simultaneously telescopically extended over the opposing ends of the tube blank, simultaneously sealing the ends and compressing the contents of the tube blank and the bores and wherein both said tube blank and the tools are completely submerged in said bath before said sealing and compressing by said tools.
- 11. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 6 wherein said second station means further includes blank preforming means for preforming a portion of the blank into the desired plan view configuration, said preforming means being mounted to said wing and including an outer die defining an inwardly facing third semicylindrical mold cavity, said outer die being adapted to reciprocate between a retracted position and an extended position where said outer die, when said wing is in its closed position, compresses a leg of a just tangent bent blank against a mutually cooperating inner die forming said preformed tube.
- 12. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 11 wherein said tools are pivotally mounted to said wing and are adapted to remain coaxial with the ends of said tube blank during said tangent bending and said preforming of the tube blank.
- 13. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 1 wherein said die defines an outwardly facing vertical punch engaging wall which smoothly transitions at its bottom into an upwardly facing ledge, wherein said die further defines an outwardly facing vertical heel which transitions at its top, at an acute angle, into said ledge, where said punch defines an inwardly facing vertical die engaging wall which transitions at its top into a downwardly facing ledge, and wherein said punch further defines an inwardly facing vertical heel which transitions at its bottom, at an acute angle, into said downwardly facing ledge.
- 14. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 13 wherein said ledges having a plan view configuration substantially identical to the plan view configuration of said preformed tube.
- 15. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 14 wherein said punch and said die are adapted to mutually vertically reciprocate between a closed and an open position, the closed position being defined by the heel of said punch being substantially horizontally everywhere adjacent the wall of said die, the wall of said punch being substantially horizontally everywhere adjacent the heel of said die, and the ledge of said punch being vertically aligned and disposed above the ledge of said die, said ledges mutually defining the elevational view and cross-sectional configuration of the frame member, and wherein said open position is defined by said punch being everywhere above said die and the ledges being vertically aligned.
- 16. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 15 wherein said third station means further includes a base upon which said die is fixedly mounted and wherein said punch is reciprocal between said open and closed positions, wherein, in said open position, said die being adapted to receive a preformed tube upon its ledge, wherein said punch is adapted to ram straight downward from its open position to a tube trapping position wherein said ledges are vertically aligned, said ledges and said walls together form a closed stuffing cavity trapping the preformed tube, and wherein said punch is further adapted to ram straight down from said tube trapping position to said closed position wherein said preformed tube is formed into the desired frame member.
- 17. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 16 wherein said third station means includes sealing means for sealing the ends of said tube and applying the internal hydraulic pressure to the tube.
- 18. The apparatus for forming a frame member of claim 16 wherein said base is the base of a tub which is filled with a liquid bath to a level which will be above a tube placed upon the ledge of said die.
- 19. An apparatus for forming a frame member from a tube blank having opposed ends comprising:
- a first having a hopper containing at least several tube blanks, a ramp and a burnishing unit wherein one blank at a time is delivered from the hopper down the ramp to the burnishing unit which burnishes the ends of the blank after which the blank is delivered to a subsequent station;
- a second station having a pair of sealing units which seal the opposed ends of the blank delivered from the first station, and apply an internal hydraulic pressure to fill the entire interior of the blank with hydraulic fluid, and a bender which bends the pressurized blank into a preformed tube;
- a third station having a mutually cooperating punch and die, a pair of sealing units which seal the ends of the opposed ends of the tube delivered from the second station and apply an internal hydraulic pressure wherein the sealing unit pressurize the interior of the tube as the punch is lowered onto the die to compress the pressurized tube to form a frame member; and
- a delivery system to deliver the blank and tube between the stations.
- 20. A method of forming a frame member from a tubular blank having opposed ends comprising the steps of:
- delivering a tubular blank to a first station;
- burnishing the opposed ends of the blank;
- sealing the opposed ends of the blank by engaging a first pair of sealing units with the opposed ends of the blank;
- pressurizing the entire interior of the blank by applying hydraulic pressure to the interior of the blank;
- bending the pressurized blank to form a preformed tube;
- sealing the opposed ends of the preformed tube by engaging a second pair of sealing units with the opposed ends of the preformed tube;
- pressurizing the interior of the preformed tube by applying hydraulic pressure to the interior of the preformed tube;
- compressing the pressurized tube between a die and punch to form a frame member.
