Claims
- 1. A forming and positioning apparatus for forming a fastening means, from a supply of forming material capable of being deformed into a desired fastening means configuration and thereafter substantially retaining said configuration, and positioning a formed fastening means for securing wrapping material extending around a plurality of units to provide a retainable assemblage, said formed fastening means having a body portion and a material engaging portion, said apparatus comprising:
- forming means for receiving said forming material and for establishing a desired configuration of said fastening means including forming of said material engaging portion and said body portion;
- directing means for receiving said formed fastening means from said forming means and directing said formed fastening means to a position adjacent said plurality of units; and
- detaching means for detaching said formed and positioned fastening means from said supply of forming material.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said apparatus includes positioning means for positioning of said plurality of units at a wrapping station to assure proper directing of said fastening means by said directing means.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said positioning means includes elevation control means for lowering of said positioning means to a position below said assemblage for removal of said assemblage after wrapping and securing of said material, and for raising said positioning means for positioning subsequently received pluralities of units.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said body portion of said fastening means is an elongate strip having elongate edges for positioning adjacent said plurality of units, said material engaging portion of said fastening means being integrally connected to each elongate edge of said strip and including a plurality of material engaging projections thereat, said material engaging portion and said projections configured to extend away from said plurality of units, and wherein said forming means includes bending means for bending said material engaging portion at said elongate edges.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said forming means includes shaping means for forming said projections.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said bending means bend and transport said fastening means from said forming means to said directing means.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said supply of material is a substantially continuous supply of material, and wherein said forming means includes channeling means for channeling said continuous supply of material to said forming means.
- 8. A forming and positioning method for forming a material securing member from a supply of forming material capable of being deformed into a desirable configuration and thereafter substantially retaining said configuration, and positioning a formed securing member for securing wrapping material extending around a plurality of units to provide a retainable assemblage, said formed securing member having a body portion and a material engaging portion, said process comprising the steps of:
- receiving said forming material from a substantially continuous supply of said forming material;
- forming said forming material to establish a desired configuration including forming said material engaging portion and said body portion;
- directing said formed securing member to a position adjacent to said plurality of units; and
- detaching said formed and positioned securing member from said supply of forming material.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein said process further comprises positioning said plurality of units at a wrapping station to assure proper directing of said securing member.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein said process further comprises restraining said plurality of units at said wrapping station while said wrapping material is being extended around said plurality of units, and releasing said retainable assemblage after said wrapping material is secured to allow said retainable assemblage to be moved from said wrapping station.
- 11. The method of claim 8 wherein said body portion of said securing member is an elongate strip having elongate edges for positioning adjacent said plurality of units, said material engaging portion of said securing member being integrally connected to each elongate edge of said strip and including a plurality of material engaging projections thereat, said material engaging portion and said projections configured to extend away from said plurality of units, and wherein said step of forming said forming material includes the step of bending said material engaging portion of said securing member at said elongate edges thereof.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein said step of forming said forming material includes the step of shaping said forming material so that said projections are established thereby.
