Claims
- 1. Apparatus for singulating a flow of items, comprising a plurality of conveyor belts arranged in series, flow sensing means associated with each of said plurality of conveyor belts for sensing flow either entering or leaving each of said belts, control means responsive to said plurality of flow sensing means for controlling the advancement of each of said conveyor belts to create separations between items; each said belt being upwardly tilted in its direction of flow with the flow output end of one belt being higher than the flow input end of any next belt in said series such that the belts are spaced apart from each other by a spacing and a plane passes through the output end of the upstream belt and the input end of the downstream belt and each said sensing means being disposed for item detection within the spacing separating each of said conveyor belts and through said plane; and at least one of said sensing means including a sensor disposed for sensing across the path of item flow of a given conveyor for the presence of nonsingular item patterns; and means associated with said sensor for selectively restraining a plurality of laterally adjacent items disposed on said given conveyor from advancement and for causing the release of one of said laterally adjacent items into a single stream of articles to be delivered.
- 2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1, further comprising:
- at least one of said flow sensor means being disposed between one of said conveyor belts and the next of said conveyor belts in said series of belts; and
- controlling means, responsive to said plurality of flow sensor means, for starting and stopping advancement of each of said conveyor belts to create separations between items.
- 3. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the first of said plurality of conveyor belts is gravity-fed.
- 4. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the average position of flow from one end of said series of belts to the other is generally horizontal.
- 5. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the flow output end of one belt is physically separated from the flow input end of any next belt in said series such that said belts are spaced apart from each other.
- 6. Apparatus as defined in claim 5, further comprising a plurality of downward inclining surfaces, each such surface being disposed between two of said conveyor belts.
- 7. Apparatus as defined in claim 5, further comprising a plurality of downward inclining surfaces, wherein a said surface is disposed between one of said conveyor belts and the next of said conveyor belts in said series of belts.
- 8. Apparatus as defined in claim 1, further comprising:
- a slide having at least one longitudinal slot formed therein;
- a member extending through said slide at said slot for restraining a package as it moves down said slide; and
- moving means connected to said member for moving said member in and along said slot.
- 9. Apparatus as defined in claim 8 wherein:
- a plurality of parallel longitudinal slots is formed in said slide; and
- said apparatus includes a plurality of said members, wherein said moving means is connected to each of said members, wherein each said slot is provided with a plurality of said members, and wherein a plurality of said members is oriented transverse to said slots.
