Claims
- 1. An apparatus for inscribing a clock pattern in an information storage unit of the type containing a platter of disk shaped storage media which rotates about an axis, the apparatus comprising:a laser system for emitting a light beam capable of marking the platter in a manner which is optically detectable; means for directing said light beam to a target position within an annulus defined on the platter and nominally centered about the axis; means for controlling both said laser system and said means for directing such that a desired integer count of clock marks are inscribed consistently spaced apart in said annulus, thereby forming the clock pattern optically.
- 2. The apparatus for inscribing of claim 1, wherein said laser system includes a member of the set consisting of YAG, CO2, alexanderite, and nitrogen lasers.
- 3. The apparatus for inscribing of claim 1, wherein said means for directing includes a lens system and a mirror system.
- 4. The apparatus for inscribing of claim 1, wherein said means for controlling includes means for timing emitting said light beam so that said clock marks are each respectively written at a single said target position as the platter is rotated about the axis, thereby inscribing the clock pattern optically when the platter is moving.
- 5. A method for writing a servo pattern in an information storage unit having a rotating platter of disk shaped storage media, the method comprising the steps of:providing a clock pattern inscribed in the platter already; assembling the platter into the storage unit; rotating the platter within the storage unit; detecting said clock pattern optically; and writing the servo pattern into the storage media in relationship to said clock pattern.
- 6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:after said step of assembling, sealing the storage unit hermetically; and including in said step of detecting, directing a light beam through a suitably transparent window in the storage unit such that the rotation of the platter moves said clock pattern through said light beam to modulate said light beam, and sensing said clock pattern optically in a portion of said light beam reflected back through said window.
- 7. A storage unit made by the method of claim 5.
- 8. A method for writing a servo pattern in an information storage unit having a rotating platter of disk shaped storage media, the method comprising the steps of:assembling the storage unit; rotating the platter within the storage unit; inscribing a clock pattern into the platter of the storage unit; detecting said clock pattern optically; and writing the servo pattern into the storage media in relationship to said clock pattern.
- 9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:after said step of assembling, sealing the storage unit hermetically; and including in said step of inscribing: synchronizing emission of a light beam with the rotation of said platter; directing said light beam through a suitably transparent window in the storage unit; and marking said clock pattern into the platter of the storage unit with said light beam.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:before said step of assembling, coating the platter with a protective layer which is suitably transparent to said light beam; and further including in said step of inscribing, after said step of directing, passing said light beam through said protective layer, thereby preventing any discharge of material from the platter into the surrounding environment.
- 11. A storage unit made by the method of claim 8.
- 12. An improved method for writing a servo pattern in an information storage unit having a rotating platter of disk shaped storage media, the improvement comprising the steps of:providing a clock pattern inscribed in the platter already; installing a suitably transparent window in the storage unit; sealing the storage unit hermetically; and detecting said clock pattern optically through said window, for use in the subsequent step of servo pattern writing.
- 13. A storage unit made by the method of claim 12.
- 14. An improved method for writing a servo pattern in an information storage unit having a rotating platter of disk shaped storage media, the improvement comprising the steps of:installing a suitably transparent window in the storage unit; sealing the storage unit hermetically; writing a clock pattern into the platter optically through said window; and detecting said clock pattern optically through said window, for use in the subsequent step of servo pattern writing.
- 15. A storage unit made by the method of claim 14.
