Claims
- 1. An apparatus for integrally joining elongate preformed thermoplastic elements comprising:
- a positioning assembly which coaxially abuts opposed ends of at least one pair of said thermoplastic elements, and
- a friction-welding assembly which integrally joins said thermoplastic elements by friction-welding the abutted ends of said at least one pair of thermoplastic elements, wherein said positioning assembly includes,
- (a) a cradle assembly for cradling an upstream one of said elements in coaxial relationship to a downstream one of said elements;
- (b) a feed tray for holding an available stand-by supply of said elements, said feed tray being downwardly inclined to allow elements held thereby to roll by gravity into said cradle assembly;
- (c) a magazine assembly for containing stacks of said elements; and
- (d) a transfer assembly for sequentially transferring elements from said magazine to said feed tray.
- 2. An apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said transfer assembly includes a lift assembly which lifts an element from said magazine to an inlet chute of said feed tray.
- 3. An apparatus for integrally joining elongate preformed thermoplastic elements comprising:
- a positioning assembly which coaxially abuts opposed ends of at least one pair of said thermoplastic elements, and
- a friction-welding assembly which integrally joins said thermoplastic elements by friction-welding the abutted ends of said at least one pair of thermoplastic elements, wherein
- said positioning assembly includes,
- (a) a cradle assembly for cradling an upstream one of said elements in coaxial relationship to a downstream one of said elements;
- (b) a feed tray for holding an available stand-by supply of said elements, said feed tray being downwardly inclined to allow elements held thereby to roll by gravity into said cradle assembly; and
- (c) an alignment finger reciprocally moveable towards and away from the elements in said feed tray to ensure parallel alignment of the elements in said feed tray.
- said positioning assembly includes,
- (a) a cradle assembly for cradling an upstream one of said elements in coaxial relationship to a downstream one of said elements;
- (b) a feed tray for holding an available stand-by supply of said elements, said feed tray being downwardly inclined to allow elements held thereby to roll by gravity into said cradle assembly; and
- (c) a barrel which surrounds said abutted ends of said at least one pair of thermoplastic elements during said friction-welding thereof to constrain said abutted ends against skewed movements, wherein
- (d) said barrel includes a port connectable to a source of vacuum so as to remove any thermoplastic debris from the barrel that may be generated during said friction-welding.
- said positioning assembly includes,
- (a) a cradle assembly for cradling an upstream one of said elements in coaxial relationship to a downstream one of said elements;
- (b) a feed tray for holding an available stand-by supply of said elements, said feed tray being downwardly inclined to allow elements held thereby to roll by gravity into said cradle assembly; and
- (c) a spindle assembly engageable with a rearward end of said upstream one of said elements and longitudinally moveable so as to linearly advance said upstream one of said elements within said cradle assembly until a forward end thereof abuts said downstream one of said elements.
- 6. An apparatus as in claim 5, wherein said elements are each tubular, and wherein said spindle assembly is sized and configured to be insertable into said rearward end of said upstream one of said elements, and wherein said spindle assembly further includes:
- a gripping assembly which frictionally grips an interior surface of said upstream one of said elements; and
- a motorized drive system which rotates said spindle, and thus said upstream one of said elements relative to said downstream one of said elements, when said gripping assembly frictionally grips said interior surface of said upstream one of said elements.
- 7. An apparatus as in claim 6, wherein said gripping assembly includes inflatable bladder elements to frictionally grip said interior surface of said upstream one of said elements.
