Claims
- 1. An apparatus for producing preforms for a golf club head, the preforms composed of plies of pre-preg sheets, the apparatus comprising:
a mold defining a cavity, the mold having a top surface with an opening therein to the cavity; a plunger head configured to compress plies of pre-preg sheets placed within the cavity; and a pneumatic cylinder, the plunger head attached to the pneumatic cylinder at one end, the pneumatic cylinder, plunger head and the mold aligned along a longitudinal axis, the pneumatic cylinder allowing for oscillation of the plunger head along the longitudinal axis.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the mold defines a cavity configured for a face component for a composite golf club head, and the plunger head is configured to compress plies of pre-preg sheets into the shape of the face component, the face component having a striking plate portion and a return portion.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the mold defines a cavity configured for a crown component for a composite golf club head, and the plunger head is configured to compress plies of pre-preg sheets into the shape of the crown component.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the mold defines a cavity configured for a sole component for a composite golf club head, and the plunger head is configured to compress plies of pre-preg sheets into the shape of the sole component.
- 5. An apparatus for producing a face component preform for a golf club head, the face component preform composed of plies of pre-preg sheets, the apparatus comprising:
a mold defining a cavity, the mold having a top surface with an opening therein to the cavity, the cavity configured to define the face component, the face component having a striking plate portion and a return portion extending laterally from the striking plate portion; a first plunger head configured to compress a first set of plies of pre-preg sheets placed within the cavity to create the face component; a second plunger head configured to compress a second set of plies of pre-preg sheets placed within the cavity to create the face component, the second plunger head smaller in volume than the first plunger head; and a pneumatic cylinder, the pneumatic cylinder capable of removeably attaching the first plunger head and the second plunger head at one end, the pneumatic cylinder and the mold aligned along a longitudinal axis, the pneumatic cylinder allowing for oscillation of the first plunger head or the second plunger head along the longitudinal axis.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the first set of plies of pre-peg sheets ranges from 10 to 30 sheets and the second set of plies of pre-peg sheets ranges from 10 to 30 sheets.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the first set of plies of pre-peg sheets ranges from 20 to 25 sheets and the second set of plies of pre-peg sheets ranges from 20 to 25 sheets.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the striking plate portion of the face component has an area ranging from 3.25 square inches to 6.00 square inches.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the return portion extends laterally from the striking plate portion a distance ranging from 0.5 inch to 2.5 inches.
- 10. A method for forming preforms for a golf club head, the preforms composed of plies of pre-preg sheets, the method comprising:
placing a plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets in a mold cavity, the mold cavity configured to define a preform for a component of a golf club head; lowering a plunger head along a longitudinal axis toward the mold cavity, the plunger head configured to compress the plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets into a component of a golf club head; compressing the plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets with the plunger head to form a component of a golf club head; and removing the component of a golf club head from the mold cavity.
- 11. A method for forming a face component for a golf club head, the face component composed of plies of pre-preg sheets, the method comprising:
placing a first plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets in a mold cavity, the mold cavity configured to define a face component for a golf club head; lowering a first plunger head along a longitudinal axis toward the mold cavity, the first plunger head configured to compress the first plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets into a face component for a golf club head; compressing the first plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets with the first plunger head to form a face component for a golf club head; replacing the first plunger head with a second plunger head, the second plunger head smaller in volume than the first plunger head; placing a second plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets in the mold cavity over the first plurality of plies of pre preg sheets; lowering the second plunger head along a longitudinal axis toward the mold cavity, the first plunger head configured to compress the second plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets into a face component for a golf club head; compressing the second plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets with the second plunger head to form a face component for a golf club head; removing the component of a golf club head from the mold cavity.
- 12. A method for forming a crown component for a golf club head, the crown component composed of plies of pre-preg sheets, the method comprising:
placing a plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets in a mold cavity, the mold cavity configured to define a crown component for a golf club head; lowering a plunger head along a longitudinal axis toward the mold cavity, the plunger head configured to compress the plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets into a crown component for a golf club head; compressing the plurality of plies of pre-preg sheets with the plunger head to form a crown component for a golf club head; and removing the crown component for a golf club head from the mold cavity.
