Claims
- 1. An apparatus for morselating tissue within a body cavity of a patient comprising:
- an elongated shaft comprising an stationary outer tube, an inner carrier rotatably disposed within said outer tube said outer tube and inner carrier being rotatable with respect to each other, a proximal end portion, and a distal end portion, said outer tube having an opening at its distal end; and
- first electrode surface carried by said movable inner carrier and being movable with said carrier.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a second electrode surface carried by said elongated shaft at said distal end portion wherein said first and second electrode surfaces define electrodes of opposite polarity for transmission of energy and morselation of tissue therebetween.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said first and said second electrode surfaces are carried on said inner carrier.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said first and second electrode surfaces comprise wires disposed on opposite sides of said inner carrier.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising a pair of electrical conductors carried by said inner carrier, each conductor extending between one of said electrode surfaces and the proximal end portion of said inner carrier.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said conductors are in the form of relatively thin and wide strips carried on the outer surface of said inner carrier.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the outer tube has a non-conductive inner surface.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said first electrode surface is connected to an output terminal of a first polarity of a bipolar RF generator and said second electrode surface is connected to an output terminal of a second, opposite polarity of a bipolar RF generator.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein first electrode surface comprises a wire.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said first and second electrode surfaces extend beyond the distal end of said outer tube.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said first and second electrode surfaces are flush with the distal end of said outer tube.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising an electrical conductor extending between said first electrode surface and said proximal end portion of said inner carrier on which it is carried.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said electrical conductor comprises a relatively wide and thin strip of conductive material.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 12 in which said inner carrier on which said first electrode is carried comprises a wall defined by inner and outer layers of non-conductive material, and said conductor is located therebetween.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the inner carrier and outer tube are relatively axially movable.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a hand piece located at the proximal end of said shaft.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a hand piece, a motor disposed within said hand piece operable to rotate said rotatable inner carrier, and a power supply disposed in said hand piece and operatively connected to said motor.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a second electrode surface carried by said outer tube, said first electrode surface being connectable to a selected one of a monopolar active or return terminal of an RF generator and said second electrode surface being connectable to a selected other of the monopolar active or return terminal of an RF generator.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first electrode surface extends from the distal end of said inner carrier to form a loop.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first electrode surface comprises a wire.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said inner carrier and outer tube include alignable side ports at their distal ends, said first electrode surface extending along the side port on said inner carrier, and a second electrode surface carried by said outer tube adjacent the side port in said outer tube.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said opening at said distal end of said outer tube comprises a side port.
