Claims
- 1. A method of providing security to operation of a retail terminal having a video camera and a printing device associated therewith, comprising the steps of:capturing a first video image of a user with said video camera during operation of said retail terminal by said user and generating an electronic video file in response thereto; extracting a second video image from said electronic video file, said second video image being representative of said first video image; and printing said second video image with said printing device, wherein said retail terminal includes a self-service checkout terminal which is operated by a customer, wherein said capturing step includes the step of capturing said first video image of said customer with said video camera during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said customer, further comprising the step of printing a transaction receipt with said printing device so as to complete a checkout transaction of said customer, wherein said step of printing said second video image includes the step of printing said second video image on a portion of said transaction receipt with said printing device.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said retail terminal further has a display monitor associated therewith, further comprising the step of:displaying said second video image on said display monitor during operation of said retail terminal by said user.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein:said retail terminal includes a self-service checkout terminal which is operated by a customer, said capturing step includes the step of capturing said first video image of said customer with said video camera during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said customer, and said displaying step includes the step of displaying said second video image on said display monitor during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said customer.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein:said video camera includes a digital video camera, and said capturing step includes the step of capturing said first video image of said user with said digital video camera during operation of said retail terminal by said user.
- 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of capturing a third video image of a predetermined portion of said retail terminal with said video camera so as to provide security during operation of said retail terminal by said user.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein:said predetermined portion of said retail terminal includes a bagwell having a grocery container positioned therein, and said step of capturing said third video image includes the step of capturing said third video image of said grocery container positioned in said bagwell.
- 7. A retail terminal, comprising:a video camera; a printing device; a processing unit electrically coupled to both said video camera and said printing device; and a memory device electrically coupled to said processing unit, wherein said memory device has stored therein a plurality of instructions which, when executed by said processing unit, causes said processing unit to: (a) capture a first video image of a user with said video camera during operation of said retail terminal by said user and generate an electronic video file in response thereto, (b) extract a second video image from said electronic video file, said second video image being representative of said first video image, and (c) print said second video image with said printing device; further comprising a scanner device which is operated by a customer during a self-service checkout transaction, wherein said plurality of instructions, when executed by said processing unit, further causes said processing unit to capture said first video image of said customer with said video camera during said self-service checkout transaction, wherein said plurality of instructions, when executed by said processing unit, further causes said processing unit to: (a) print a transaction receipt with said printing device so as to complete said self-service checkout transaction of said customer, and (b) print said second video image on a portion of said transaction receipt with said printing device.
- 8. The retail terminal of claim 7, further comprising a display monitor, wherein said plurality of instructions, when executed by said processing unit, further causes said processing unit to display said second video image on said display monitor during operation of said retail terminal by said user.
- 9. The retail terminal of claim 8, further comprising a scanner device which is operated by a customer during a self-service checkout transaction, wherein said plurality of instructions, when executed by said processing unit, further causes said processing unit to:(a) capture said first video image of said customer with said video camera during said self-service checkout transaction, and (b) display said second video image on said display monitor during said self-service checkout transaction.
- 10. The retail terminal of claim 7, wherein said video camera includes a digital video camera.
- 11. The retail terminal of claim 7, further comprising a bagwell having a grocery container positioned therein, wherein said plurality of instructions, when executed by said processing unit, further causes said processing unit to capture a third video image of said grocery container positioned in said bagwell with said video camera so as to provide security during operation of said retail terminal by said user.
- 12. A method of providing security to operation of a self-service checkout terminal having a video camera and a printing device associated therewith, comprising the steps of:capturing a first video image of a customer with said video camera during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said customer and generating an electronic video file in response thereto; determining if said customer has tendered payment for an item for purchase and generating a payment-tendered control signal in response thereto; extracting a second video image from said electronic video file, said second video image being representative of said first video image; and printing a transaction receipt with said printing device in response to generation of said payment-tendered control signal, wherein said printing step includes the step of printing said second video image on a portion of said transaction receipt with said printing device.
- 13. The method of claim 12, wherein said self-service checkout terminal further has a display monitor associated therewith, further comprising the step of displaying said second video image on said display monitor during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said customer.
- 14. The method of claim 12, wherein:said video camera includes a digital video camera, and said capturing step includes the step of capturing said first video image of said customer with said digital video camera during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said customer.
- 15. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of capturing a third video image of a predetermined portion of said self-service checkout terminal with said video camera so as to provide security during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said customer.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein:said predetermined portion of said self-service checkout terminal includes a bagwell having a grocery container positioned therein, and said step of capturing said third video image includes the step of capturing said third video image of said grocery container positioned in said bagwell.
- 17. A method of providing security to operation of a retail terminal, comprising the steps of:obtaining a video image of a user during operation of said retail terminal by said user; and printing a picture of said user on a transaction receipt, said picture of said user being based on said video image.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein said user is a customer.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein said user is a retail clerk who is operating said retail terminal.
- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein:said retail terminal includes a self-service checkout terminal which is operated by said user, and said obtaining step includes the step of capturing said video image of said user with a video camera during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said user.
- 21. The method of claim 17, wherein said retail terminal further has a display monitor associated therewith, further comprising the step of:displaying said picture of said user on said display monitor during operation of said retail terminal by said user.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein:said retail terminal includes a self-service checkout terminal which is operated by said user, said obtaining step includes the step of capturing said video image of said user with a video camera during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said user, and said displaying step includes the step of displaying said picture of said user on said display monitor during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said user.
- 23. The method of claim 20, wherein:said video camera includes a digital video camera, and said capturing step includes the step of capturing said video image of said user with said digital video camera during operation of said retail terminal by said user.
- 24. The method of claim 20, further comprising the step of capturing another video image of a predetermined portion of said retail terminal with said video camera so as to provide security during operation of said retail terminal by said user.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein:said predetermined portion of said retail terminal includes a bagwell having a grocery container positioned therein, and said step of capturing said other video image includes the step of capturing said other video image of said grocery container positioned in said bagwell.
- 26. A method of providing security to operation of a self-service checkout terminal, comprising the steps of:capturing a video image of a user with a video camera during operation of said self-service checkout terminal by said user and generating an electronic video file in response thereto; and printing a picture of said user on a portion of a transaction receipt with a printing device, said picture being based on said electronic video file.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein said user is a customer.
- 28. The method of claim 26, wherein said user is a retail clerk who is operating said retail terminal.
- 29. A method of providing security to operation of a retail terminal, comprising the steps of:obtaining image data representative of a user during operation of said retail terminal by said user; and printing a picture of said user on a transaction receipt, said picture being
