- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said discharge duct includes at least one movable wall for adjusting the velocity of the column of air passing therethrough.
- 7. Apparatus of claim 1 wherien said discharge duct is inclined from the top of said primary duct over said secondary sorting duct.
- 8. Apparatus of claim 7 wherein said discharge duct is inclined at an angle of about five to fifteen degrees from vertical.
- 9. Apparatus of claim 8 wherein said discharge duct includes a lower inclined wall positioned such that particulate material, falling by gravity, onto said wall, slides along said wall and into the secondary sorting duct.
- 10. Apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for removing particulate material from said secondary sorting duct and for admitting air into said secondary sorting duct from the surrounding atmosphere.
- 11. Apparatus of claim 10 further comprising:
- movable damper means operable to adjustably constrict said secondary sorting duct for regulating the velocity of said column of air in said secondary sorting duct.
- 12. Apparatus of claim 10 wherein said means for admitting air into said secondary sorting duct is proportioned to admit a volume of air which is about ten to twenty percent of the total volume of air admitted into the apparatus.
- 13. Apparatus of claim 10 wherein said means for admitting air into said secondary sorting duct comprises the only air inlet communication with said secondary sorting duct.
- 14. Apparatus of claim 1 wherein said primary sorting duct is inclined under said feeding means.
- 15. Apparatus of claim 1 wherein said primary sorting duct has a reduced cross-sectional area near its top so that the column of air moving through said primary duct is accelerated prior to entering said discharge duct.
- 16. Apparatus for pneumatically separating fractions of a heterogeneous mixture of particulate material according to relative densities and/or aerodynamic properties comprising:
- an unobstructed generally vertical and straight primary sorting duct having a reduced cross-sectional area near its top and open to the atmosphere at the bottom thereof;
- a discharge duct extending upwardly from the top of said primary sorting duct and inclined at an angle of between five and fifteen degrees from vertical and having movable walls which are positioned such that a column of air moves through a region at the bottom thereof at a velocity less than the velocity of a column entering said discharge duct from said primary sorting duct;
- a rotary star feed device for feeding material to be separated into said primary sorting duct at a location immediately below said discharge duct so that there is a short, unobstructed path between said location and the interior of said discharge duct;
- an air foil provided at the bottom of said discharge duct to minimize the turbulence of air flowing upwardly through said primary sorting duct and into said discharge duct;
- a generally vertical secondary sorting duct displaced horizontally from said primary sorting duct and disposed under said discharge duct such that at least some of the particulate material falling downwardly in said discharge duct will fall into said secondary sorting duct;
- said secondary sorting duct including an air inlet and damper means for regulating the velocity of air in said secondary sorting duct;
- said secondary sorting duct narrowing at its top to form a venturi having an upwardly opening funnel-shaped mouth which opens into said discharge ductk at a small acute angle to said primary sorting duct such that the entire volume of a column of air moving through said secondary duct is accelerated upwardly and merged, with a minimum of turbulence, into the column of air already moving upwardly in said discharge duct; and
