Claims
- 1. A method of managing storage of disturbances of an alternating-current electrical signal, the method comprising:
- evaluating a quality factor for each of a sequence of disturbances;
- storing said sequence of disturbances along with said quality factors in a partition of a storage device; and
- replacing, when said partition becomes full, a lowest quality factor disturbance, the lowest quality factor disturbance having a lowest quality factor of the sequence of disturbances stored in the partition, with a current disturbance if the current disturbance quality factor is higher than the lowest quality factor.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the disturbances are impulses superimposed on the alternating-current electrical signal and said step of evaluating comprises substeps of:
- measuring a peak amplitude and a duration of each impulse; and
- multiplying together said peak amplitude and said duration for each impulse to obtain the quality factor.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of replacing the lowest quality factor disturbance includes deleting the lowest quality factor disturbance and storing the current disturbance.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of replacing the lowest quality factor disturbance includes overwriting the lowest quality factor disturbance with the current disturbance.
- 5. An apparatus for storing identified disturbances of an alternating-current electrical signal comprising:
- a quality factor evaluator for determining quality factors of said disturbances;
- a storage device; and
- a storage controller for recording disturbances along with said quality factors in a partition of said storage device and, when the partition becomes full, for deleting a stored disturbance with a lowest stored quality factor from said storage device and storing a current disturbance if the current disturbance has a current quality factor higher than the lowest stored clarity factor.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the disturbances are impulses and said quality factor evaluator comprises:
- an impulse evaluator for measuring peak amplitudes and durations of said impulses; and
- a multiplier for multiplying said peak amplitudes and said durations together to obtain quality factors for said impulses.
- 7. An apparatus for storing power disturbance data comprising:
- an impulse evaluator for measuring peak amplitudes and durations of a series of impulses superimposed on an alternating-current electrical signal;
- a multiplier for multiplying the peak amplitudes and durations together to obtain quality factors for the impulses;
- an electronic memory capable of storing a plurality of impulses and quality factors;
- a controller coupled to the electronic memory, the controller recording impulses and quality factors in the electronic memory until the electronic memory becomes full, and then replacing a lowest quality factor impulse and a lowest stored quality factor with a current impulse and a current quality factor in the electronic memory if the current quality factor is higher than the lowest stored quality factor.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the electronic memory is a partition of a storage device.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the replacing of the lowest quality factor impulse and the lowest stored quality factor includes deleting the lowest quality factor impulse and the lowest stored quality factor and storing the current impulse and the current quality factor.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the replacing of the lowest quality factor impulse and the lowest stored quality factor is done by overwriting the lowest quality factor impulse and the lowest stored quality factor with the current impulse and the current quality factor.
- 11. An apparatus for storing identified disturbances of an alternating-current electrical signal comprising:
- a quality factor evaluator for determining quality factors of said disturbances;
- a storage device; and
- a storage controller for recording disturbances along with said quality factors in a partition of said storage device and, when the partition becomes full, for overwriting a stored disturbance having a lowest stored quality factor from said storage device with a current disturbance if the current disturbance has a current quality factor higher than the lowest stored quality factor.
