Claims
- 1. An apparatus for producing carbon black comprising:
- a reactor defining a chamber including a combustion compartment, a reaction compartment and a quench compartment;
- first inlet means opening into said chamber and operable for introducing fed hydrocarbon into said chamber;
- second inlet means opening into said combustion compartment and operable for introducing combustion gases into said combustion compartment;
- third inlet means opening into said quench compartment operable for introducing quench fluid into said quench compartment;
- indirect heat exchange means connected in flow communication with said chamber and operable for receiving and cooling effluent from said quench compartment of said chamber;
- separator means connected to flow communication with said indirect heat exchange means for receiving effluent therefrom and operable for separating said effluent into a gas portion and a carbon black portion; and
- control means including temperature sensing means operably associated with said indirect heat exchange means for producing a signal representative of the rate of heat transfer from the effluent in said indirect heat exchange means, said control means being operably associated with said first inlet means for intervallicly terminating introduction of feed hydrocarbon into the chamber in response to said heat transfer rate being below a predetermined level indicating a relatively low level of heat transfer in the indirect heat exchange means and restarting the flow of feed hydrocarbon when the heat transfer rate once again reaches said predetermined level.
- 2. An apparatus as set forth in claim 1 including:
- conduit means connecting said indirect heat exchange means in flow communication with said separator means; and
- fourth inlet means opening into said conduit means operable for introducing quench fluid into said conduit means for cooling said effluent flowing in said conduit means.
- 3. An apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein:
- a fifth inlet means and a first outlet means connected to said indirect heat exchange means for heat sink medium introduction and discharge respectively;
- said control means is operably associated with said first outlet means and operable for measuring the heat content per unit time of the heat sink medium flowing through the first outlet means and producing said signal representing the heat content per unit time.
- 4. An apparatus as set forth in claim 3 wherein:
- said indirect heat exchange means includes a shell-tube type heat exchanger with sid fifth inlet means and first outlet means opening into the shell portion.
- 5. An apparatus as set forth in claim 3 including:
- sixth inlet means opening into said conduit means at a position between the separating means and the fourth inlet means and operable for introducing quench fluid into said conduit means for cooling said effluent flowing in said conduit means; and
- second control means associated with said conduit means and said sixth inlet means and being operable for measuring the temperature of the effluent in the conduit means and controlling the introduction of quench fluid into the circuit means from the sixth inlet means in response to the temperature measured by the second control means.
- 6. An apparatus as set forth in claim 5 including:
- a second indirect heat exchange means connected in said conduit means between said fourth inlet means and said sixth inlet means.
- 7. An apparatus as set forth in claim 2 including:
- third control means associated with said conduit means and said fourth inlet means and being operable for measuring the temperature of the effluent in the conduit means and controlling the introduction of quench fluid into the conduit means from the fourth inlet means in response to the temperature measured by said third control means.
