Claims
- 1. An apparatus for securing a convertible roof to a body of an automotive vehicle, said apparatus comprising:
- a striker affixed to said roof;
- a catch mechanism disposed on said body of said automotive vehicle, said catch mechanism being pivotable only about a single fixed and substantially horizontal pivot axis; and
- a drive mechanism coupled with said catch mechanism for providing pivotal movement to said catch mechanism for selectively engaging said striker, said catch mechanism being substantially vertically pivotable for engaging a substantially horizontal member of said striker;
- said striker being defined as a forward striker projecting from a substantially forwardmost portion of said roof; and
- said catch mechanism being defined as a forward catch mechanism entirely disposed within a front header assembly portion of said body when engaged with said forward striker.
- 2. An apparatus for securing a convertible roof to a body of an automotive vehicle, said apparatus comprising:
- a first pair of strikers affixed to a forward portion of said roof, said first pair of strikers each having a substantially horizontal member spanning between a pair of substantially vertical members as a single piece;
- a second pair of strikers affixed to a rear portion of said roof, said second pair of strikers each having a substantially horizontal member spanning between a pair of substantially vertical members as a single piece, said first and second pairs of strikers having a substantially identical configuration;
- a first pair of catch mechanisms disposed on a front header of said automotive vehicle body engagable with said substantially horizontal members of said first pair of strikers thereby securing said forward portion of said roof to said front header;
- a second pair of catch mechanisms disposed on a portion of said body substantially proximate a rearward portion of a passenger compartment, said second pair of catch mechanisms being engagable with said substantially horizontal members of said second pair of strikers for securing said rear portion of said roof to said body; a first electromagnetic device causing engagement of said first pairs of strikers and catches without hydraulic assistance; and
- a second electromagnetic device causing engagement of said second pairs of strikers and catches without hydraulic assistance.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein;
- said first and second catch mechanisms have substantially identical configurations.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein:
- said first and second catch mechanisms are pivotable.
- 5. A method of securing a convertible roof to a body of an automotive vehicle comprising the steps of:
- (a) extending said roof to a functional position;
- (b) creating engagement between a first striker and a first hook-like catch by energizing an electromagnetic device without hydraulic assistance thereby securing a forwardmost portion of said roof to said body;
- (c) creating engagement between a second striker and a second hook-like catch thereby securing a rear portion of said roof to said body; and
- (d) maintaining said catches in substantially hidden positions behind adjacent body panels, each of said adjacent body panels containing an access hole allowing entry of a corresponding one of said strikers during steps (b) and (c).
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein:
- at least one of said catches is rotatable in relation to at least one of said strikers.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said at least one of said catches is rotatable only about a single fixed and substantially horizontal pivot axis.
- 8. The method of claim 5 wherein:
- said first and second catches have substantially identical configurations.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein:
- said first and second catches have substantially horizontal members which said first and second strikers engage.
