Claims
- 1. Apparatus for supercritical fluid extraction, comprising:
- means for performing supercritical fluid extraction;
- said means for performing supercritical fluid extraction including a pressure-holding, controllable-temperature chamber;
- means for inserting a sample into a chamber;
- removable plug means adapted to hold the sample;
- sealing means for sealing the chamber and the plug;
- said sealing means including flow means adapted to come into contact with an extractant; and
- means for causing supercritical fluid to flow into the top of said chamber, downward through the sample and out a port in the plug.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim further including means for cleaning the sealing means when extraction is essentially complete.
- 3. Apparatus for supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 2 wherein the cleaning means comprises means for directing fluid flow from a spent extraction cartridge which has been substantially extracted over the sealing means that came in contact with the extractant during an earlier part of the extraction when the extractant contains a relatively high concentration of extract.
- 4. Apparatus for supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 2 wherein the cleaning means comprises means for dispensing a washing fluid over areas of said sealing means which came into contact with the extractant.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 2 in which the means for causing the fluid to flow from the top to the bottom includes a flow inlet located at the top of a pressure vessel and an outlet port in a plug; the plug being located at the bottom of the pressure vessel.
- 6. Apparatus in accordance with claim 5 in which the means for cleaning the sealing means includes means for sweeping the sealing means clean after each extraction by a downward flow path of fluid, wherein the tendency of sample to rise and break into segments is eliminated.
- 7. Apparatus according to claims 2 in which the means for cleaning includes means for causing fluid to bypass the extraction cartridge and go directly to the seals during the cleaning phase.
- 8. Apparatus for supercritical fluid extraction according to claim wherein the plug raises the sample into the chamber through an opening in the bottom of the chamber.
- 9. A method of supercritical fluid extraction, comprising the steps of:
- performing supercritical fluid extraction;
- the step of performing supercritical fluid extraction including the substeps of inserting a sample into a chamber by lifting it into the chamber on a movable plug means adapted to hold the sample;
- sealing the plug means and the chamber; and
- causing supercritical fluid to flow into the top of said chamber, downward through the sample and out of a port in the plug.
- 10. A method of supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 9 further including the step of cleaning the sealing means when extraction is essentially complete.
- 11. A method of supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 10 wherein the step of cleaning comprises the substeps of directing fluid flow from a spent extraction cartridge which has been substantially extracted over the sealing means that came in contact with the extractant during an earlier part of the extraction when the extractant contains a relatively high concentration of extract.
- 12. A method of supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 10 wherein the step of cleaning comprises the substeps of dispensing a washing fluid over areas of said sealing means which come in contact with the extractant.
- 13. A method of supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 10 in which the step of causing the fluid to flow from the top to the bottom includes the substeps of causing fluid to flow through an inlet located at the top of a pressure vessel, downwardly and out of an outlet port in a plug located at the bottom of the pressure vessel whereby the downward flow path of fluid eliminates the tendency of sample to rise and break into segments is eliminated.
- 14. A method of supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 13 in which the step of cleaning the sealing means includes the substep of sweeping the sealing means clean after each extraction.
- 15. A method of supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 10 in which the step of cleaning includes the substeps of causing fluid to bypass the extraction cartridge and go directly to the seals during the cleaning phase.
- 16. A method of supercritical fluid extraction according to claim 9 wherein the plug raises the sample into the chamber through an opening in the bottom of the chamber.
