Claims
- 1. A system to assist in fixing an implant member relative to an anatomy, the system comprising:
an apparatus having,
an engaging surface; and an interference surface; an interference member to selectively associate said apparatus with the anatomy; and an interference portion associated with said apparatus to assist holding said apparatus at a selected position relative to the anatomy; wherein said interference member is operable to be associated with said apparatus at a selected time.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said interference surface defines a portion of a thread operable to be engaged by said interference member.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said interference member includes a threaded shaft operable to be advanced between said interference surface and the anatomy to form an interference fit of said apparatus with the anatomy.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said engaging surface defines a structure operable to selectively engage a soft tissue.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said apparatus selectively retains a soft tissue in a bore formed in the anatomy.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said apparatus substantially defines a wedge including a first end narrower than a second end of said apparatus.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said apparatus substantially uniformly compresses a soft tissue portion relative to the anatomy.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the anatomy includes a tibia defining a bore;
wherein said apparatus is positioned in said bore and a narrow end of said apparatus is positioned distally from an entrance of the bore into the tibia.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said interference portion includes a wing extending from said apparatus to engage a surface of the anatomy to substantially eliminate a selected axial movement of said apparatus.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said interference portion includes an instrument to selectively engage said apparatus.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said interference portion includes a wing extending from said instrument, wherein said instrument allows an interaction of said wing and said instrument with the anatomy to substantially hold the said instrument in a selected position relative to said anatomy.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said engaging surface of said apparatus defines a ridge operable to engage a soft tissue to substantially efficiently hold said soft tissue relative to the anatomy.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said apparatus extends between a first end and a second end;
wherein a cross-sectional thickness of at least a portion of said apparatus near one of said first end or said second end is greater than a cross-sectional thickness at the other of said first end or said second end.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said apparatus and said interference member are complimentary tapered.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
a guide wire to assist in positioning said interference member relative to said apparatus.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said engaging surface defines a plurality of teeth.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising a groove defined in said teeth and generally perpendicular to said teeth.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said interference member is operable to move said apparatus in an radial direction relative to an axis of said interference member.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said anatomy includes a tibia defining a bore;
wherein said apparatus is operable to fix a soft tissue relative to said bore.
- 20. A method using an apparatus to assist in fixing a member relative to an anatomy, comprising:
forming a bore in the anatomy; positioning the apparatus relative to the bore; engaging a soft tissue with the apparatus; and moving an interference member to associate the apparatus with the anatomy relative to the bore defined by the anatomy.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein forming a bore in the anatomy includes forming a tibial tunnel.
- 22. The method of claim 20, further comprising forming a soft tissue of a selected material for positioning in the bore in the anatomy.
- 23. The method of claim 20, further comprising interconnecting the soft tissue between a tibia bone and a femur bone of the anatomy;
wherein positioning the apparatus includes positioning the apparatus in a bore formed in the tibia bone.
- 24. The method of claim 20, wherein positioning the apparatus includes moving the apparatus relative to the soft tissue positioned in the bore.
- 25. The method of claim 20, wherein moving an interference member includes threading an interference member relative to the apparatus.
- 26. The method of claim 20, wherein moving an interference member includes axially driving the interference member relative to the apparatus to increase an interaction between the apparatus and the anatomy.
- 27. The method of claim 26, further comprising guiding the interference member with a guide wire relative to the anatomy.
- 28. The method of claim 26, further comprising:
applying a substantially uniform force to the soft tissue relative to the anatomy with the apparatus.
- 29. The method of claim 20, further comprising holding the apparatus in a selected position relative to the anatomy in the bore.
- 30. The method of claim 20, wherein holding the apparatus includes interacting a holding portion of the apparatus with the anatomy.
- 31. The method of claim 20, further comprising:
removing the holding portion from the apparatus.
- 32. The method of claim 31, wherein removing the holding portion from the apparatus is performed substantially after moving the interference member to associate the interference member with the apparatus such that moving the interference member to associate with the apparatus substantially allows the apparatus to maintain a selected position relative to the anatomy.
- 33. The method of claim 20, wherein engaging a soft tissue includes providing a structure defined by said apparatus to substantially form an interference fit with the soft tissue.
- 34. The method of claim 20, further comprising:
moving the apparatus radially at least in part by moving the interference member relative to the wedge apparatus.
- 35. The method of claim 20, further comprising:
engaging the apparatus with a grasper to hold the apparatus relative to the anatomy.
- 36. The method of claim 35, further comprising:
providing a holding portion on the grasper.
- 37. The method of claim 20, further comprising:
compressing substantially uniformly the soft tissue relative to the anatomy.
- 38. The method of claim 20, further comprising:
tensioning the soft tissue relative to the anatomy.
- 39. An apparatus for fixation of a soft tissue within a tunnel formed in a bone, said apparatus comprising:
a first member having a first side and a second side; said first side including a plurality of teeth operable to engage the soft tissue soft tissue against the first side of the tunnel; said second side including a threaded face operable to axially receive an interference screw; and a second member preventing said first member from axially extending into the tunnel more than a predetermined amount.
- 40. The apparatus as defined in claim 39 wherein at least one of said plurality of teeth includes a plurality of substantially perpendicular notches.
- 41. The apparatus as defined in claim 40 wherein said at least one tooth includes an arcuate edge.
- 42. The apparatus as defined in claim 39 wherein each of said plurality of teeth are oriented substantially parallel with one another and each of said plurality of teeth includes a plurality of notches each axially aligned perpendicular to said teeth.
- 43. The apparatus as defined in claim 39 wherein said second side includes an arcuate periphery substantially surrounding said threaded face.
- 44. The apparatus as defined in claim 39 wherein said first member includes a first end and a second end, said first end including a rounded nose defining a V-shaped notch.
- 45. The apparatus as defined in claim 39 wherein said second member includes a pair of angled wings having an angled face which axially aligns with the bone upon axial insertion of the wedge into the tunnel.
- 46. The apparatus as defined in claim 39 wherein said second member includes a pair of notches defined by said first member.
- 47. The apparatus as defined in claim 46 wherein said second member further includes an instrument operable to engage said pair of notches formed into said first member and including an angled face operable to engage an entrance opening into the tunnel.
- 48. The apparatus as defined in claim 39 wherein said first member includes a first end and a second end, said first end being thicker than said second end to be substantially complimentary with the interference screw.
- 49. A system to assist in fixing an implant member relative to an anatomy, the system comprising:
an apparatus extending between a first end and a second end having,
an engaging surface; and an interference surface; an interference member to selectively associate said apparatus with the anatomy; and wherein a cross-sectional thickness of at least a portion of said apparatus near one of said first end or said second end is greater than a cross-sectional thickness at the other of said first end or said second end; wherein said interference member is operable to be associated with said apparatus at a selected time.
- 50. The system of claim 49, wherein said apparatus is operable to be positioned in a bore to retain a soft tissue portion relative to the anatomy.
- 51. The system of claim 50, wherein said apparatus and said interference member cooperate to substantially uniformly compress the soft tissue within the bore.
- 52. The system of claim 49, further comprising: an interference portion associated with said apparatus to assist holding said apparatus at a selected position relative to the anatomy.
- 53. The system of claim 52, wherein said interference portion extends from a grasper operable to selectively engage said apparatus.
- 54. The system of claim 50, wherein said interference portion includes a wing extending from said apparatus near at least one of said first end or said second end.
