- a rotatable member operatively mounted on said detector apparatus for biased, force-transmitting engagement on said conductor to movably support said detector apparatus for longitudinal movement along the length of said conductor and align said receiving space in a predetermined position relative to the longitudinal axis of said conductor.
- 2. A system for detecting a loss of cross-sectional area and the residual strength of a conductor having at least one metallic reinforcing member having magnetic properties comprising;
- a detector component;
- a data acquisition component;
- a tug capable of providing a motive force to the detector component and linked to the detector component and the data acquisition component;
- a source of power operatively connected to the tug, to enable said tug, detector component and data acquisition component to travel along a conductor;
- the detector component further includes a rotatable mounted permanent magnet positioned to emanate a magnetic field toward a coil winding spaced apart therefrom and defining a conductor receiving space therebetween, and a drive element connected to said magnet to impart a rotational torque upon said magnet to enable the coil winding to experience an induced voltage in response to the rotating magnetic field.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein:
- the at least one metallic reinforcing member having magnetic properties and partially comprised of a material selected from the group of materials consisting of steel, iron, nickel, and cobalt.
- 4. The system of claim 2, further including:
- a recorder to record the voltage induced in the coil winding.
- 5. The system of claim 4, further including:
- connection means for electronically interconnecting the recorder to the coil winding.
- 6. The system of claim 5, such that the connection means further includes:
- a transmitter and a receiver to transmit voltage information from the coil to the recorder by a radio frequency carrier signal and without the need for wiring to interconnect the recorder to the coil winding.
- 7. The system of claim 2, further including:
- a housing to cover the coil winding and the source of magnetic energy.
- 8. The system of claim 2, further comprising:
- a power source for energizing the drive element.
- 9. The system of claim 2, further comprising: an operational amplifier to alter the electronic signal induced into the coil.
- 10. The system of claim 2, further comprising:
- a peak hold device for recording maximum voltages per a user selected unit of time.
- 11. The system of claim 2, such that the source of magnetic energy further comprises:
- a magnet having a positive pole substantially parallel to a negative pole.
- 12. The system defined in claim 2 wherein said magnet has a positive pole disposed substantially parallel to a negative pole and wherein said poles are disposed at generally a right angle to a conductor disposed longitudinally within said receiving space.
- 13. An apparatus for detecting a loss of structural strength of a generally cylindrical conductor having a length and at least one metallic member having magnetic properties, comprising in combination;
- a detector component;

- the detector component further including a rotatably mounted permanent magnet and a spaced, oppositely disposed coil winding defining a receiving space for said conductor and a drive element operatively connected to said magnet to impart a rotational torque upon said magnet;
- a mounting component operatively connected to said detector component and said data acquisition component and including a pair of spaced and oppositely disposed mounting members configured to receive said conductor in force-transmitting, movable engagement to support said detector and data acquisition components for longitudinal movement along the length of said conductor when said conductor is disposed in said receiving space in essentially the same relative position between said magnet and coil winding;
- and a source of motive power operatively connected to one of said mounting component, said detector component and said data acquisition component to effect travel of said apparatus along the length of said conductor.
- 14. The apparatus defined in claim 13 wherein said conductor includes a plurality of discrete metallic strands having magnetic properties and arranged in a closely adjacent generally cylindrical configuration.
