Claims
- 1. A method of monitoring a meat packaging operation, wherein information regarding at least one carcass and cuts of meat taken from the carcass is stored by a central programmable electronic processor, including the steps of:generating identification data for the carcass; storing said identification data for the carcass in the central programmable electronic processor; generating identification data for each cut of meat from the carcass, wherein said identification data for each cut of meat includes data regarding the carcass from which the cut was removed; and storing said identification data for each cut of meat in the central programmable processor.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said identification data for the carcass includes information regarding the animal from which the carcass was derived.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said identification data for each cut of meat further includes data regarding a physical attribute of each cut of meat.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein a physical attribute is the weight of a cut of meat.
- 5. The method of claim 3 wherein a physical attribute is the length of a cut of meat.
- 6. The method of claim 3 wherein a physical attribute is the width of a cut of meat.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said identification data for each cut of meat further includes data regarding when each cut of meat will arrive at a predetermined location in the meat packaging operation.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said identification data for each cut of meat further includes data regarding the current location of each cut of meat within the meat packaging operation.
- 9. A method of performing a meat packaging operation, wherein carcasses are transferred through one or more workstations where one or more cuts of meat are removed from the carcasses and the cuts of meat are transferred to one or more predetermined locations, comprising the steps of:identifying the cuts of meat with data regarding the carcass from which the cut was removed; storing the identity of the cuts of meat in a central programmable electronic processor; moving the cuts of meat to one of the predetermined locations; and accessing the identity of each cut of meat from the central programmable electronic processor.
- 10. The method of claim 9 further comprising the steps of generating data regarding the physical attributes of the cuts of meat and storing the data in the central programmable electronic processor.
- 11. The method of claim 9 further comprising the steps of generating data regarding the current locations of the cuts of meat within the meat packaging operation and storing the data in the central programmable electronic processor.
- 12. An apparatus for use in a meat packaging operation, wherein cuts of meat are removed from a carcass, comprising:a conveyor for moving the cuts of meat to a workstation; a central programmable electronic processor associated with said conveyor, said central programmable electronic processor containing data about the carcass and the cuts of meat, wherein the data includes data linking the cuts of meat to the carcass from which they were removed; and a workstation coupled to the central programmable electronic processor, wherein said workstation is capable of receiving the data about the cuts of meat or is capable of providing additional data about the cuts of meat to the central programmable electronic processor.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said workstation is a bagging station.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said workstation produces bags for packaging the cuts of meat, wherein each bags is marked with data about the cut of meat to be packaged therein.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the data about the cut of meat to be packaged therein includes data about the carcass from which the cut of meat was removed.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said conveyor includes sensors for identifying the current location of predetermined positions along said conveyor.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein said conveyor is capable of providing data about the current position of the cuts of meat to the central programmable electronic processor.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said workstation is a trimming station.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said trimming station is capable of providing the weights of the cuts of meat to the central programmable electronic processor.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said workstation is an apparatus for assessing the length, width, or thickness of the cuts of meat.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein said apparatus for assessing the length, width, or thickness of the cuts of meat is capable of providing the length, width, or thickness of the cuts of meat to the central programmable electronic processor.
