Claims
- 1. An error feedback pulse code modulation encoder for converting an analog input signal to a digital output signal representative thereof, comprising
- a first differencing circuit for combining said input signal and an error feedback signal to generate a composite signal,
- quantizing means responsive to said first differencing circuit for generating said digital output signal by sampling said composite signal and converting said samples to digital form,
- a second differencing circuit for combining said composite signal and said digital output signal to generate a quantizing error signal, and
- means for generating said error feedback signal from said quantizing error signal including
- 1. a delay line having stages 1 through n for receiving said quantizing error signal, each of said stages having an output tap,
- 2. n attenuators having attenuation coefficients a.sub.1 through a.sub.n connected to respective ones of said output taps, and
- 3. means for algebraically summing the outputs of said attenuators to form said error feedback signal,
- wherein said attenuation coefficients are selected in accordance with the relationship ##EQU24##
- 2. The invention defined in claim 1 wherein said analog signal has a bandwidth f.sub.o and said quantizer is arranged to sample said error signal at a rate of at least 5 f.sub.o.
- 3. An error feedback pulse code modulation encoder arranged to convert an analog input signal to a digital output signal representative thereof, comprising
- a quantizer for sampling a composite analog signal applied thereto at a rate f.sub.s to generate said digital output signal,
- means for generating a quantization error signal from the difference between digital output signal and said composite signal,
- a filter for receiving said quantization error signal and for generating a feedback signal therefrom, and
- means for generating said composite signal from the difference between said analog input signal and said feedback signal,
- wherein said filter has a transfer function K(Z) in the Z domain given by
- K(Z) = 1-(1-Z.sup.-1).sup.N
- and N is an integer between 2 and 5.
