Claims
- 1. Apparatus for sewing together two materials using a blind stitch, said apparatus comprising:
- a frame;
- a sewing apparatus disposed on said frame for sewing together two materials with a blind stitch, said sewing apparatus including a sewing needle;
- apparatus for feeding the two materials to and through said sewing apparatus in a single direction of movement, said feeding apparatus comprising:
- an upper feed for engaging an upper surface of the two materials, said upper feed being spaced from said sewing needle in a direction normal to said direction of movement and being generally aligned with said sewing needle with respect to said direction of movement; and
- a lower feed disposed generally below said upper feed so that the two materials are disposed between said upper and lower feeds, said lower feed being spaced from said sewing needle in a direction normal to said direction of movement and being generally aligned with said sewing needle with respect to said direction of movement, said lower feed being positively driven to feed the two materials to and through said sewing apparatus in said direction of movement.
- 2. The sewing apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
- apparatus for securing one of said upper and said lower feeds to prevent movement thereof toward and away from the two materials; and
- a cylinder for providing a force to urge another of said upper and said lower feeds against said one of said upper and said lower feeds to capture the two materials therebetween and for retracting said other of said upper and said lower feeds away from said one of said upper and said lower feeds to allow insertion of the two materials therebetween.
- 3. The sewing apparatus as recited in claim 2 further comprising means for regulating the force provided by said cylinder.
- 4. The sewing apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
- a support arm disposed below said sewing apparatus for supporting the two materials passing through said sewing apparatus, said support arm being pivotably mounted to said frame; and
- a cylinder operatively connected to said support arm, said cylinder including means for biasing said support arm upwardly towards said sewing apparatus and being operable to pivot said support arm downwardly away from said sewing apparatus to allow introduction of the materials to said sewing apparatus.
- 5. The sewing apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
- a feed dog; and
- means for synchronizing speed and movement of said lower feed with speed and movement of said feed dog, whereby the two materials are advanced through said sewing apparatus at generally a same speed and whereby said lower feed, said feed dog and said sewing apparatus are activated and deactivated in synchronization.
- 6. Apparatus for sewing together two materials using a blind stitch, said apparatus comprising:
- a frame;
- a sewing apparatus disposed on said frame for sewing together two materials with a blind stitch, said sewing apparatus including a sewing needle;
- apparatus for feeding the two materials to and through said sewing apparatus in a single direction of movement, said feeding apparatus comprising:
- an upper feed for engaging an upper surface of the two materials, said upper feed being spaced from said sewing needle in a direction normal to said direction of movement and being generally aligned with said sewing needle with respect to said direction of movement;
- a lower feed for engaging a lower surface of the two materials, the two materials being disposed between said upper and said lower feeds, said lower feed being spaced from said sewing needle in a direction normal to said direction of movement and being generally aligned with said sewing needle with respect to said direction of movement;
- apparatus for positively driving said upper feed apparatus to produce rotational motion of said upper feed apparatus for feeding the two materials to and through said sewing apparatus in said direction of movement.
- 7. The sewing apparatus as recited in claim 6, further comprising:
- apparatus for securing one of said upper and said lower feeds to prevent movement thereof toward and away from the two materials; and
- a cylinder for providing a force to urge another of said upper and said lower feeds against said one of said upper and said lower feeds to capture the two materials therebetween and for retracting said other of said upper and said lower feeds away from said one of said upper and said lower feeds to allow insertion of the two materials therebetween.
- 8. The sewing apparatus as recited in claim 7, further comprising means for regulating the force provided by said cylinder.
- 9. The sewing apparatus as recited in claim 6, further comprising:
- a support arm disposed below said sewing apparatus for supporting the two materials passing through said sewing apparatus, said support arm being pivotably mounted to said frame; and
- a cylinder operably connected to said support arm, said cylinder including means for biasing said support arm upwardly towards said sewing apparatus and being operable to pivot said support arm downwardly away from said sewing apparatus to allow introduction of the two materials to said sewing apparatus.
- 10. The sewing apparatus as recited in claim 6, further comprising:
- a feed dog; and
- means for synchronizing speed and movement of said upper feed with speed and movement of said feed dog, whereby the two materials are advanced through said sewing apparatus at generally a same speed and whereby said upper feed, said feed dog and said sewing apparatus are activated and deactivated in synchronization.
- 11. Apparatus for sewing together two materials using a blind stitch, said apparatus comprising:
- a frame;
- a sewing apparatus disposed on said frame for sewing together two materials with a blind stitch, said sewing apparatus including a sewing needle;
- apparatus for feeding the two materials to and through said sewing apparatus in a single direction of movement;
