Claims
- 1. An apparatus for binding a stack of media sheets having a binding region with imaging material applied thereto, the apparatus comprising:
a tray for supporting the stack; a movable activator near the tray; a press coupled to the activator, the press operative between a first position in which the activator is separated from the stack to a second position in which the activator contacts and compresses the stack at the binding region; and a biasing means operatively connected between the press and the activator for biasing the activator against the stack when the press is in the second position.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the biasing means comprises a spring.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the activator comprises a platen.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the activator comprises a heated platen.
- 5. An apparatus for binding a stack of media sheets having a binding region with imaging material applied thereto, the apparatus comprising:
a tray for supporting the stack; a movable activator near the tray; a press coupled to the activator, the press operative between a first position in which the activator is separated from the stack to a second position in which the activator contacts and compresses the stack at the binding region; a biasing means operatively connected between the press and the activator for biasing the activator against the stack when the press is in the second position; and a controller electronically coupled to the press and the first activator, the controller operative to divert power from the press to the activator as the activator compresses the stack.
- 6. An apparatus for binding a stack of media sheets having a binding region with imaging material applied thereto, the apparatus comprising:
a tray for supporting the stack; a first movable platen near the tray; a second platen disposed opposite the stack from the first activator; a press coupled to at least the first platen, the press operative between a first position in which the first platen is separated from the stack to a second position in which the stack is compressed between the platens at the binding region; and a biasing means operatively connected between the press and at least one of the platens for biasing the platens against the stack when the press is in the second position.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the biasing means is operatively connected between the press and the first platen.
- 8. An apparatus for binding a stack of media sheets having a binding region with imaging material applied thereto, the apparatus comprising:
a tray for supporting the stack; a first activator near the tray, the first activator movable between an open position in which the first activator is separated from the stack, a first pressed position in which the first activator contacts and compresses the stack, and a second pressed position in which the first activator further compresses the stack; a press coupled to the first activator, the press operative to move the first activator from the open position to the first pressed position; and a biasing means between the press and the first activator for biasing the first activator from the first pressed position to the second pressed position.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising a stationary second activator disposed opposite the stack from the first activator and wherein the stack is compressed between the first and second activators when the first activator is in the pressed positions.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the activators comprise platens.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the activators comprise heated platens.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the second platen is integrated within the tray.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising a controller electronically coupled to the press and the first activator, the controller operable to sequentially direct:
the press to move the first activator from the open position to the first pressed position; and the first activator to heat imaging material in the binding region of the stack.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the controller is further operative to divert power from the press to the first activator as the first activator heats the imaging material.
- 15. A system for producing a bound document from a stack of media sheets, each sheet having imaging material deposited on a binding region, the system comprising:
an image forming device configured to apply imaging material in the pattern of a desired print image to each media sheet, to apply imaging material to selected binding regions on each media sheet, and to activate the imaging material; and a binding device comprising
a tray for supporting the stack, a movable activator near the tray, a press coupled to the activator, the press operative between a first position in which the activator is separated from the stack to a second position in which the activator contacts and compresses the stack at the binding region, and a biasing means operatively connected between the press and the activator for biasing the activator against the stack when the press is in the second position.
- 16. The system according to claim 15, further comprising a computer electronically coupled to the image forming device and the binding device, the computer operative to create or retrieve an electronic representation of the document and transmit the electronic representation to the image forming device to be printed on the media sheets and to direct the binding device to bind the media sheets once dispensed from the image forming device.
- 17. The system according to claim 15, wherein the image forming device and the binder comprise one appliance.
