Claims
- 1. A calendering apparatus for calendering an elongated fibrous web having a predetermined width, the calendering apparatus comprising:a first calender having a heated counter element disposed adjacent to an enclosed shoe roll comprising a flexible tubular jacket surrounding a support beam, the counter element and shoe roll being configured to operably engage the fibrous web therebetween to calender only a medial portion thereof; and a second calender disposed adjacent to the first calender and comprising a first roll and a second roll, the first and second rolls being configured to operably engage the fibrous web therebetween and being axially positioned relative to the first calender in a width-wise direction of the fibrous web so as to calender at least a distal portion of the fibrous web.
- 2. A calendering apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the second roll has an axial length of between 50 mm and 500 mm.
- 3. A calendering apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the second roll has an axial length of between 100 mm and 300 mm.
- 4. A calendering apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising at least one pivot arm and an actuation assembly operably engaged therewith, the at least one pivot arm adapted to pivotally engage a support member at one end thereof, operably engaging the second roll at the opposing end thereof, and being pivotable about the support member by the actuation assembly such that the second roll is movable with respect to the first roll.
- 5. A calendering apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the actuation assembly comprises a hydraulic piston assembly.
- 6. A calendering apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the at least one pivot arm further comprises two pivot arms, each pivot arm adapted to pivotally engage the support member at one end thereof and having the second roll engaged therebetween at the other ends thereof.
- 7. A calendering apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising an independent drive for rotating the second roll.
- 8. A calendering apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the tubular jacket further comprises an end wall operably engaging each end thereof, the end walls cooperating with the tubular jacket so as to be capable of rotating about the support beam.
- 9. A calendering apparatus according to claim 8 wherein at least one of the end walls is axially displaceable so as to exert an adjustable transverse tensile force on the tubular jacket.
- 10. A calendering apparatus according to claim 8 further comprising a force transmitting device operably engaging at least one of the end walls and a drive cooperating with the force transmitting device to rotate the tubular jacket.
- 11. A calendering apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the drive comprises a rotatable drive wheel configured to frictionally engage the force transmitting device for rotating the tubular jacket.
- 12. A calendering apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the drive comprises a positive engagement mechanism configured to operably engage the force transmitting device for rotating the tubular jacket.
- 13. A calendering apparatus according to claim 10 further comprising a first separating mechanism operably engaging the shoe roll for moving the shoe roll with respect to the heated roll and a second separating mechanism operably engaging the heated roll for moving the heated roll with respect to the shoe roll.
- 14. A calendering apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the second separating mechanism further comprises at least one lever arm adapted to pivot about an axis at one end thereof and operably engaging the heated roll at the other end thereof, and wherein the at least one lever arm is pivotable about the axis by a hydraulic assembly so as to move the heated roll with respect to the tubular jacket.
- 15. A calendering apparatus according to claim 13 further comprising a detection device and a control system in communication with the first calender, wherein the detection device is capable of detecting a lengthwise breakage of the fibrous web and notifying the control system thereof, and wherein the control system is configured to actuate the drive to rotate the tubular jacket and to actuate the first separating mechanism to separate the tubular jacket from the heated roll when notified of the fibrous web breakage by the detection device.
- 16. A calendering apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the control system is further configured to actuate the second separating mechanism to further separate the heated roll from the tubular jacket.
- 17. A calendering apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the apparatus is configured such that the second calendar operably engages the fibrous web after the first calendar engages the fibrous web.
- 18. A calendering apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the apparatus is configured such that the second calendar operably engages the fibrous web before the first calendar engages the fibrous web.
