Claims
- 1. An apparatus for the continuous aerobic composting of a mass of organic matter, the apparatus comprising:
- an elongated composting vessel with an internal composting chamber which contains the mass, the chamber having one end adjacent which organic matter to be processed is received and another end adjacent which organic matter which has passed through the chamber and has been composted is discharged;
- an inlet opening adjacent the one end of the chamber, which inlet opening, when projected into the composting chamber, defines an incremental inlet space in the composting chamber, said incremental inlet space being a space into which a new charge of organic matter may be periodically fed;
- an outlet opening adjacent the other end of the chamber;
- means for advancing an existing mass of organic matter already in the composting chamber through the composting chamber towards the outlet opening to create an evacuated space in the composting chamber, which evacuated space is of substantially greater volume than the volume of said incremental inlet space by virtue of its extending further into said chamber in a direction toward the outlet opening than said incremental inlet space;
- means for moving a new charge of organic matter from the incremental inlet space to join the existing mass of organic matter in a movement separate from that of advancing the existing mass of organic matter; and
- means for compressing the new charge of organic matter until a predetermined compression of the new charge of organic matter is achieved.
- 2. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said advancing means, said moving means and said compressing means are all constituted by a hydraulically driven arm.
- 3. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, further comprising a plurality of said inlet openings, which inlet openings are spaced from each other in the direction of a longitudinal axis of the composting vessel; whereby new charges of organic matter may be fed through different of said inlet openings at different times to be deposited in different parts of the composting chamber.
- 4. An apparatus as defined in claim 3, further comprising:
- a plurality of infeed conveyors, one infeed conveyor being coupled with each of said inlet openings for feeding organic matter to be composted to the inlet openings;
- a supply conveyor selectively connectable with each of said infeed conveyors for selectively supplying organic matter to each of said infeed conveyors;
- means for switching connections between said supply conveyor and said infeed conveyors, such that, when said switching means is in one condition, said supply conveyor feeds organic matter to one of said infeed conveyors, yet, when said switching means is switched to another condition, said supply conveyor feeds organic matter to another of said infeed conveyors.
- 5. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said inlet opening comprises a moveable inlet opening which is displaceable into various different positions along a longitudinal axis of the composting vessel, such that various new charges of organic matter may be fed into different parts of the composting chamber at different times depending on the position of the moveable inlet opening.
- 6. An apparatus as defined in claim 5, wherein said moveable inlet opening is bordered by a sliding curtain to close those regions of said vessel to which the moveable inlet opening may be moved, such closing being effective when the moveable inlet opening is not located in such regions.
- 7. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said advancing means further comprises means for impelling an existing mass of organic matter in the composting chamber at only selected times when relatively small new charges of organic matter are to be introduced into the composting chamber to create a vacant space in the composting chamber, which vacant space is not of substantially greater volume than the volume of the incremental inlet space.
- 8. An apparatus for the continuous aerobic composting of a mass of organic matter, the apparatus comprising:
- an elongated composting vessel with an internal composting chamber which contains the mass, the chamber having one end adjacent which organic matter to be processed is received and another end adjacent which organic matter which has passed through the chamber and has been composted is discharged;
- an inlet opening adjacent the one end of the chamber, which inlet opening, when projected into the composting chamber, defines an incremental inlet space in the composting chamber, said incremental inlet space being a space into which a new charge of organic matter may be periodically fed;
- an outlet opening adjacent the other end of the chamber;
- means for advancing an existing mass of organic matter already in the composting chamber through the composting chamber towards the outlet opening to create an evacuated space in the composting chamber, which evacuated space defines a forming zone, which evacuated space is of substantially greater volume than the volume of said incremental inlet space by virtue of its extending further into said chamber in a direction toward the outlet opening than said incremental inlet space; and
- means for moving a new charge of organic matter from the incremental inlet space to join the existing mass of organic matter in a movement separate from and with a shorter stroke than that of advancing the existing mass of organic matter with said advancing means.
- 9. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein said forming zone extends from one percent to twenty percent of the length of the composting vessel.
- 10. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein said advancing means and said moving means are both constituted by a hydraulically driven ram.
- 11. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, further comprising a plurality of said inlet openings, which inlet openings are spaced from each other in the direction of a longitudinal axis of the composting vessel; whereby new charges of organic matter may be fed through different of said inlet openings at different times to be deposited in different parts of the composting chamber.
- 12. An apparatus as defined in claim 11 further comprising:
- a plurality of infeed conveyors, one infeed conveyor being coupled with each of said inlet openings for feeding organic matter to be composted to the inlet openings;
- a supply conveyor selectively connectable with each of said infeed conveyors for selectively supplying organic matter to each of said infeed conveyors; and
- means for switching connections between said supply conveyor and said infeed conveyors, such that, when said switching means is in one condition, said supply conveyor feeds organic matter to one of said infeed conveyors, yet, when said switching means is switched to another condition, said supply conveyor feeds organic matter to another of said infeed conveyors.
- 13. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein said inlet opening comprises a moveable inlet opening which is displaceable into various different positions along a longitudinal axis of the composting vessel, such that various new charges of organic matter may be fed into different parts of the composting chamber at different times depending on the position of the moveable inlet opening.
- 14. An apparatus as defined in claim 13, wherein said moveable inlet opening is bordered by a sliding curtain to close those regions of said vessel to which the moveable inlet opening may be moved, such closing being effective when the moveable inlet opening is not located in such regions.
