Claims
- 1. An apparatus for use in achieving composting of organic materials, said apparatus comprising:
- means defining a generally rectangular zone including first and second spaced parallel side edges, first and second spaced parallel end edges and a floor extending between said edges for being covered by and supporting a layer of organic materials provided with proper temperature, moisture and microorganism content to enable composting thereof, said floor having therein plural perforations;
- means for injecting air through said perforations upwardly into the layer;
- agitator means for agitating said organic materials being composted, said agitator means including a rotatable horizontal shaft which is mounted to extend transverse only to said side edges and a plurality of scraper blades which are fixed to said shaft and which extend generally radially from said shaft, said scraper blades being located such that they will scrape a predetermined width of organic materials from a layer of said materials covering said floor at said zone, such scraping being in a first direction parallel to said side edges, and such scraper blades being structured such that they will throw the thus scraped materials upwardly above said layer in a second direction opposite to said first direction, such that the thus thrown materials fall back down to reform the layer in a loose and non-packed manner, thereby aerating said materials to facilitate said composting thereof;
- means defining a path outside of said zone and extending parallel to said side edges for allowing the passage of said agitator means outwardly of said zone in a direction parallel to said side edges;
- a longitudinal carriage extending transversely to said side edges and above said layer, said carriage extending from one said side edge to a position beyond the other said side edge and said path;
- a carrier mounted on said carriage and supporting said agitator means;
- means for traversing said agitator means back and forth between said first and second side edges in directions transverse to said first and second directions, said traversing means comprising means for moving said carrier and said agitator means longitudinally of said carriage and for moving said carrier and said agitator means between said zone and said path when said carriage is located at either of said end edges; and
- means for periodically shifting said agitator means in said first direction by incremental distances, equal to said predetermined width, from said first end edge to said second end edge, said shifting being between traversing movements of said agitator means, so that the entire said layer is scraped and thrown in incremental bands of said predetermined width, said shifting means comprising means for moving said carriage, said carrier and said agitator means parallel to said side edges and transverse to the longitudinal direction of said carriage.
- 2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a pair of rails extending parallel to said side edges, opposite ends of said carriage being supported on and guided by said rails.
- 3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein a first said rail is positioned adjacent a first said side edge, and a second said rail is spaced laterally outwardly of a second said side edge, thereby defining therebetween said path free of said organic materials.
- 4. An apparatus as claimed in claim 3, further comprising a shelter enclosing said zone and said agitator means, said rails being mounted on side walls of said shelter.
- 5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said zone defining means comprises a pair of side walls defining said side edges, said carriage extends above and straddles said side walls, said carriage includes a pair of downwardly extending supporting legs positioned laterally outwardly of said side walls, and further comprising a pair of rails positioned laterally outwardly of said side walls, said rails supporting said legs and guiding said carriage for movement therealong.
- 6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said agitator means comprises a lower agitator and an upper agitator positioned above said lower agitator, said upper and lower agitators having the same construction.
- 7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 6, wherein said upper agitator is positioned slightly forward of said lower agitator with respect to said first direction.
- 8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 6, wherein the circumferential speed of said upper agitator is greater than the circumferential speed of said lower agitator.
