Claims
- 1. A continuous casting apparatus, comprising:
- a tundish for containing molten metal;
- a tundish nozzle provided at the bottom of said tundish;
- a break ring communicating with said tundish nozzle;
- a mold, said mold having an inlet, an outlet and a contact area, for continuously cooling molten metal the molten metal being supplied from said tundish through said tundish nozzle and said break ring, in direct contact with said mold and forming the molten metal into a cast section by allowing solidification of the molten metal to start below the surface thereof in said mold said break ring being fitted in said inlet of said mold so that said break ring contacts said inlet of said mold on said contact area thereof;
- means for intermittently withdrawing the cast section relative to said mold through said outlet thereof;
- first annular sealing means at said inlet of said mold for forming a first cut-off space at said inlet of said mold for preventing the infiltration of air into said mold through said contact area, said first annular sealing means having a diameter larger than a maximum diameter of said contact area between said break ring and said inlet of said mold;
- a second annular sealing means for forming a second cut-off space at said inlet of said mold having said first cut-off space inside thereof and sealing said first cut-off space from said second cut-off space;
- means for maintaining the pressure in said first cut-off space below atmospheric pressure; and
- means for constantly supplying a sealing gas that is soluble in molten metal at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure into said second cut-off space.
- 2. A continuous casting apparatus, comprising:
- a tundish for containing molten metal;
- a tundish nozzle provided at the bottom of said tundish;
- a break ring communicating with said tundish nozzle;
- a mold, said mold having an inlet, an outlet and a contact area, for continuously cooling molten metal the molten metal being supplied from said tundish through said tundish nozzle and said break ring, in direct contact with said mold and forming the molten metal into a cast section by allowing solidification of the molten metal to start below the surface thereof in said mold said break ring being fitted in said inlet of said mold so that said break ring contacts said inlet of said mold on said contact area thereof;
- means for intermittently withdrawing the cast section relative to said mold through said outlet thereof;
- first annular sealing means at said inlet of said mold for forming a first cut-off space at said inlet of said mold that is cut off from the inside of said mold by said contact area between said break ring and said inlet of said mold, said first cut-off space being bounded along a closed curve having a diameter larger than a maximum diameter of said contact area between said break ring and said inlet of said mold, and said first cut-off space being cut off from the atmosphere;
- a second annular sealing means for forming a second cut-off space at said inlet of said mold having said first cut-off space inside thereof and sealing said first cut-off space from said second cut-off space;
- a third annular sealing means for forming a third cut-off space at said outlet of said mold, said third cut-off space being bounded along a closed curve at a diameter larger than the inside diameter of said mold and cut off from the atmosphere;
- means for maintaining the pressure in said first cut-off space next to said inlet of said mold below atmospheric pressure; and
- a first means for constantly supplying a sealing gas that is soluble in molten metal at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure into said second cut-off space; and
- second means for constantly supplying a sealing gas that is soluble in molten metal at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure into said third cut-off space adjacent to said outlet of said mold.
- 3. A continuous casing apparatus according to any one of claims 1 and 2, in which said mold is disposed so that the axis thereof extends horizontally.
- 4. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 1, in which said mold comprises a first mold and a second mold connected to an intermediate outlet of said first mold, an intermediate sealing means is inserted between said first and second molds, said intermediate sealing means forms an intermediate cut-off space between said first and second molds for preventing the infiltration of air into said first mold through said first and second molds, and further comprising means for constantly supplying a sealing gas soluble in the molten metal and having a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure into said intermediate cut-off space.
- 5. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 4, in which said second mold comprises a plurality of mold segments that are movable in the radial direction of said second mold.
- 6. A continuous casting apparatus according to any one of claims 1 and 2, in which said sealing means comprises an annular gasket of silicone rubber.
- 7. A continuous casting apparatus according to any one of claims 1 and 2, in which nitrogen gas is used as the sealing gas.
- 8. A continuous casting apparatus according to claims 1 or 2, in which said means for maintaining the pressure in said first cut-off space below atmospheric pressure comprises a vacuum pump connected to said first cut-off space through a pipe.
- 9. A continuous casting apparatus according to any one of claims 1 and 2, and further comprising an intermediate ring contacting said break ring for being inserted between the tundish and said mold when the tundish and said mold are connected to each other.
- 10. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 9, wherein said cut-off space or said first cut-off space is formed by an annular gasket that is between said intermediate ring and an entry end surface of said mold and that surrounds said break ring.
- 11. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 10, and further comprising a circumferential groove concentric with said intermediate ring provided in an exit end surface of said intermediate ring diametrically inside of said annular gasket, said circumferential groove checking temperature increases of said annular gasket.
- 12. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 10, in which an inner part of said annular gasket at a front end surface of said intermediate ring is covered with a sealing material.
- 13. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 10, in which at least an outer surface of said intermediate ring is covered with a sealing material.
- 14. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 9, wherein a hollow annular cooling ring is provided along the periphery of said intermediate ring, an annular gasket surrounds said break ring and is located between said hollow cooling ring and an entry end surface of said mold and forms said cut-off space or said first cut-off space, and means for supplying cooling air to said hollow cooling ring.
- 15. A continuous casting apparatus according to any one of claims 1 and 2, wherein said break ring is maintained in contact with a tundish nozzle at an exit end of the tundish with a gasket disposed therebetween, an annular projection concentric with the tundish nozzle is formed on a steel shell at the exit end of the tundish, and an annular gasket inserted in an annular gasket groove provided in the periphery of said mold forms said cut-off space or said first cut-off space by contacting an inner peripheral surface of said annular projection.
- 16. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 1, in which a circumferential wall is provided between the tundish and said mold, a concentric double wall is provided facing said circumferential wall, a gasket is inserted in a groove formed by said double wall, and said second annular sealing means is formed by the tip of said circumferential wall contacting said gasket, thereby forming said second cut-off space.
- 17. A continuous casting apparatus according to claim 2, in which a circumferential wall is provided between the tundish and said mold, a concentric double wall is provided facing said circumferential wall, a gasket is inserted in a groove formed by said double wall, and said second annular sealing means is formed by the tip of said circumferential wall contacting said gasket, thereby forming said second cut-off space.
- 18. A continuous apparatus according to any one of claims 16 and 17, in which one of the tundish and said mold is fastened and the other of the tundish and said mold is movable in the direction in which the cast section is withdrawn.
