Claims
- 1. Apparatus for continuously deforming an elongated workpiece of indefinite length to produce an elongated product of indefinite length, said apparatus comprising:
- first means, mounted for rotation and having a radially extending first surface, including an annular groove therealong, for engaging with said first surface a first peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece, said first means further including an annular recess, located inwardly from said annular groove in a direction away from said first surface of the first means, and a liner shrink-fitted into said annular recess in the first means, said liner including said annular groove, said liner further having a portion thereof extending generally outwardly from said annular recess along said second arcuate area of the annular groove so that the liner will be forced inwardly into the annular recess along said first arcuate area of the annular groove including said first and second locations during the rotation of said first and second means and will apply compressive stresses of increasing magnitude to the elongated workpiece as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location to said second location while within the annular groove;
- second means, mounted for movement upon rotation of said first means and having a second surface facing said first surface of said first means, for engaging with said second surface a second peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece such that the elongated workpiece will be gripped between said first surface of the first means and said second surface of the second means and will advance from a first location to a second location upon the rotation of the first means and the simultaneous movement of the second means;
- a deforming agency so located adjacent to said second location as to receive and deform the elongated workpiece upon the advance of the elongated workpiece to said second location;
- third means for rotating said first means; and
- fourth means, rendered effective simultaneously with operation of said third means, for so moving said second means with said first means as to advance the elongated workpiece toward and into said deforming agency.
- 2. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said second surface is substantially flat, and wherein said first and second means are mounted relative to one another such that said substantially flat second surface covers a first arcuate area of said annular groove in said first surface, including said first and second locations, and leaves uncovered a second arcuate area of said annular groove.
- 3. Apparatus as set forth in claim 2, wherein the axis of rotation of said first means is so disposed relative to the path of movement of said second means as to position said first and second means most closely adjacent to one another substantially at said second location such that pressure applied from said first and second means to the elongated workpiece will increase as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location toward said second location.
- 4. Apparatus as set forth in claim 3, wherein said fourth means comprises means for rotating said second means about an axis of rotation.
- 5. Apparatus for the continuous hydrostatic extrusion of an elongated product of indefinite length, from an elongated workpiece of indefinite length, the elongated workpiece having a coating of a fluent material thereon, which apparatus comprises:
- first means, mounted for rotation and having a radially extending first surface, for engaging with said first surface a first coated peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece;
- second means, mounted for movement upon rotation of said first means, and having a second surface facing said first surface of said first means, for engaging with said second surface a second coated peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece such that the coated elongated workpiece will be gripped between said first surface of the first means and said second surface of the second means and will advance from a first location to a second location upon the rotation of said first means and the simultaneous movement of the second means;
- an extrusion die so located adjacent to said second location as to receive the elongated workpiece upon the advance of the elongated workpiece to said second location;
- third means for rotating said first means;
- fourth means, rendered effective simultaneously with operation of said third means, for so moving said second means with said first means as to advance the elongated workpiece toward and into said extrusion die; and
- fifth means for applying a continuously increasing hydrostatic pressure to the coating on the elongated workpiece, corresponding to a continuously increasing pressure in the elongated workpiece, as the elongated workpiece is advanced from said first location toward said second location.
- 6. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5, wherein said first means includes an annular groove along said radially extending first surface for engaging said first peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece and retaining said first peripheral portion therein.
- 7. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5, said fifth means comprising:
- means for mounting said first means to rotate about an axis so disposed relative to the path of movement of said second means as to position said first and second means most closely adjacent to one another substantially at said second location, such that pressure applied from said first and second means to the coating on the elongated workpiece will increase as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location toward said second location.
- 8. Apparatus as set forth in claim 7, wherein said fourth means comprises means for rotating said second means about an axis of rotation.
- 9. Apparatus for the continuous hydrostatic extrusion of an elongated product of indefinite length, from an elongated workpiece of indefinite length, the elongated workpiece having a coating of a fluent material thereon, which apparatus comprises:
- first means, mounted for rotation and having a radially extending first surface, for engaging with said first surface a first coated peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece;
- second means, mounted for rotation with said first means and having a radially extending second surface, for engaging with said second surface a second coated peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece such that the coated elongated workpiece will be gripped between said first surface of the first means and said second surface of the second means and will advance from a first location to a second location upon the simultaneous rotation of said first and second means;
- an extrusion die so located adjacent to said second location as to receive the elongated workpiece upon the advance of the elongated workpiece to said second location;
- third means for rotating said first means;
- fourth means, rendered effective simultaneously with operation of said third means, for rotating said second means; and
- fifth means for applying a continuously increasing hydrostatic pressure to the coating on the elongated workpiece, corresponding to a continuously increasing pressure in the elongated workpiece, as the elongated workpiece is advanced from said first location toward said second location.
- 10. Apparatus as set forth in claim 9, wherein said first means includes an annular groove along said radially extending first surface for engaging said first peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece and retaining said first peripheral portion therein.
- 11. Apparatus as set forth in claim 10, wherein said third and fourth means comprises means for directly rotating each of said first and second means.
- 12. Apparatus as set forth in claim 10, wherein said third and fourth means comprise means for rotating each of said first and second means at a different speed of rotation, but with like tangential velocities adjacent to said second location.
- 13. Apparatus as set forth in claim 10, said fifth means comprising:
- means for mounting said first and second means to rotate about two different, nonparallel axes, said axes being so disposed as to position said first and second means most closely adjacent to one another substantially at said second location, such that pressure applied from said first and second means to the coating on the elongated workpiece will increase as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location toward said second location.
- 14. Apparatus as set forth in claim 13, wherein said third and fourth means comprise means for rotating each of said first and second means at a different speed of rotation, but with like tangential velocities adjacent to said second location.
- 15. Apparatus as set forth in claim 13, wherein said first means includes an annular recess, located inwardly from said annular groove in a direction away from said first surface of the first means, said fifth means further comprising:
- a liner shrink-fitted into said annular recess in the first means, said liner including said annular groove, said liner further having a portion thereof extending generally outwardly from said annular recess at said first location so that the liner will be forced inwardly into said annular recess between said first and second locations during the rotation of said first means, and will apply compressive stresses of increasing magnitude to the coating on the elongated workpiece as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location to said second location while within the annular groove.
- 16. Apparatus as set forth in claim 15, wherein said second means further includes an additional annular recess, located in said second surface in such position as to register with said annular groove in said first surface along said first arcuate area of the annular groove, said fifth means still further comprising:
- a facing ring shrink-fitted into said additional annular recess and having a portion thereof extending generally outwardly from said additional annular recess where not in registry with said first arcuate area of said annular groove so that, upon the simultaneous rotation of said first and second means, each arcuate element of the facing ring coming into registry with said first arcuate area of said annular groove will be forced inwardly into said additional annular recess, and will enclose and seal the coated elongated workpiece within said first arcuate area of said annular groove while applying compressive stresses of increasing magnitude to the coating on the elongated workpiece as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location to said second location.
- 17. In combination with apparatus for deforming an elongated workpiece by passing the elongated workpiece through a deforming agency, an improved mechanism for advancing the elongated workpiece toward and through the deforming agency, which mechanism comprises:
- first means, mounted for rotation toward the deforming agency and having a radially extending first surface, including an annular groove therealong, for engaging with said first surface a first peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece, and said first means further including an annular recess, located inwardly from said annular groove in a direction away from said first surface of the first means, and a liner shrink-fitted into said annular recess in the first means, said liner including said annular groove, said liner further having a portion thereof extending generally outwardly from said annular recess along said second arcuate area of the annular groove so that the liner will be forced inwardly into the annular recess along said first arcuate area of the annular groove including said first and second locations during the rotation of said first and second means, and will apply compressive stresses of increasing magnitude to the elongated workpiece as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location to said second location while within the annular groove.
- 18. Apparatus as set forth in claim 17, wherein said second surface is substantially flat, and wherein said first and second means are mounted relative to one another such that said substantially flat second surface covers a first arcuate area of said annular groove in said first surface, including said first and second locations, and leaves uncovered a second arcuate area of said annular groove.
- 19. Apparatus as set forth in claim 18, wherein the axis of rotation of said first means is so disposed relative to the path of movement of said second means as to position said first and second means most closely adjacent to one another substantially at said second location such that pressure applied from said first and second means to the elongated workpiece will inrease as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location toward said second location.
- 20. Apparatus as set forth in claim 19, wherein said third means comprises means for rotating each of said first and second means toward the deforming agency.
- 21. Apparatus for continuously deforming an elongated workpiece of indefinite length to produce an elongated product of indefinite length, said apparatus comprising:
- first means, mounted for rotation and having a radially extending first surface with an annular groove, for operatively engaging and retaining a first peripheral portion of said elongated workpiece, said first means further including an annular recess, located inwardly from said annular groove in a direction away from the first surface of said first means;
- second means, mounted for rotation with said first means and having a radially extending, substantially flat, second surface for operatively engaging with said second surface a second peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece such that the elongated workpiece will be gripped between the first surface of said first means and the second surface of said second means and will advance from a first location to a second location upon the simultaneous rotation of the first and second means, said first and second means being mounted relative to one another such that said substantially flat second surface covers a first arcuate area of said annular groove in said first surface, including said first and second locations, and leaves uncovered a second arcuate area of said annular groove;
- a liner shrink-fitted into the annular recess in said first means, said liner including said annular groove, said liner further having a portion thereof extending generally outwardly from said annular recess along said second arcuate area of the annular groove so that the liner will be forced inwardly into the annular recess along said first arcuate area of the annular groove including said first and second locations during the rotation of said first and second means, thereby to apply compressive stresses of increasing magnitude to the elongated workpiece as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location to said second location while within the annular grove;
- a deforming agency, located adjacent said second location, in such a manner as to receive and deform the elongated workpiece upon the advance of the elongated workpiece to said second location; and
- means for simultaneously rotating said first and second engaging means.
- 22. Apparatus as set forth in claim 21, wherein said second engaging means further includes an additional annular recess, located in said substantially flat, second surface in such position as to register with said annular groove in said first surface along said first arcuate area of the annular groove, said apparatus further comprising:
- a facing ring shrink-fitted into said additional annular recess and having a portion thereof extending generally outwardly from said additional annular recess where not in registry with said first arcuate area of said annular groove so that, upon the simultaneous rotation of said first and second engaging means, each arcuate element of the facing ring coming into registry with said first arcuate area of said annular groove will be forced inwardly into said additional annular recess, and will enclose the elongated workpiece within said first arcuate area of said annular groove while applying compressive stresses of increasing magnitude to the elongated workpiece as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location to said second location.
- 23. In combination with apparatus for deforming an elongated workpiece by passing the elongated workpiece through a deforming agency, an improved mechanism for advancing the elongated workpiece toward and through the deforming agency, which mechanism comprises:
- first means, mounted for rotation toward the deforming agency and having a radially extending first surface, for engaging with said first surface a first peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece, said first engaging means including an annular groove along said first surface for engaging said first peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece and retaining said first peripheral portion therein and an annular recess, located inwardly from said annular groove in a direction away from the first surface of said first means;
- second means, mounted for rotation toward the deforming agency with said first means and having a radially extending second surface, for engaging with said second surface a second peripheral portion of the elongated workpiece such that the elongated workpiece will be gripped between said first surface of the first means and said second surface of the second means and will advance from a first location, spaced from the deforming agency, to a second location, adjacent to the deforming agency, upon the simultaneous rotation of the first and second means toward the deforming agency, said first and second means being mounted for rotation about two different, non-parallel axes, said axes being so disposed as to position said first and second means most closely adjacent to one another substantially at said second location such that pressure applied from said first and second means to the elongated workpiece will increase as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location toward said second location;
- a liner shrink-fitted into the annular recess in said first means, said liner including said annular groove, said liner further having a portion thereof extending generally outwardly from said annular recess along said second arcuate area of the annular groove so that the liner will be forced inwardly into the annular recess along said first arcuate area of the annular groove including said first and second locations during the rotation of said first and second means, thereby to apply compressive stresses of increasing magnitude to the elongated workpiece as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location to said second location while within the annular groove; and
- means for simultaneously rotating said first and second engaging means toward said deforming agency.
- 24. Apparatus as set forth in claim 23, wherein said second engaging means further includes an additional annular recess, located in said substantially flat second surface in such position as to register with said annular groove in said first surface along said first arcuate area of the annular groove, said apparatus further comprising:
- a facing ring shrink-fitted into said additional annular recess and having a portion thereof extending generally outwardly from said additional annular recess where not in registry with said first arcuate area of said annular groove so that, upon the simultaneous rotation of said first and second means, each arcuate element of the facing ring coming into registry with said first arcuate area of said annular groove will be forced inwardly into said additional annular recess, and will enclose the elongated workpiece within said first arcuate area of said annular groove while applying compressive stresses of incresing magnitude to the elongated workpiece as the elongated workpiece advances from said first location to said second location.
- 25. Apparatus as set forth in claim 24, the elongated workpiece having a coating of a fluent material thereon, said liner and said facing ring constituting means for sealing said annular groove so as to prevent the escape of the fluent material therefrom.
