Claims
- 1. In an apparatus for continuously supplying a web of sheet material, the combination of, a base, a carrier on said base for supporting a roll of web and for advancing the roll from a first station to a second station, said carrier supporting said roll for rotation about the axis of the roll, means for guiding said web as the latter is unwound from said roll and operable to guide the web when the roll is in each of said stations and when the roll is being advanced from said first station to said second station, a movable member in frictional driving engagement with the periphery of said roll when the latter is in said first station and driven by the roll as said web is unwound, means supporting said member on said base for movement with the advance of said roll and maintaining said member in frictional engagement with the roll as the roll is advanced to said second station, a brake mounted on said base and operable when energized to apply a braking force to said member and thus to said web, mechanism connecting said brake to said member in all positions of the latter, and means responsive to the tension of said web and operable to control the energization of said brake thereby to continuously control the tension as the roll is advanced to said second station.
- 2. In an apparatus for continuously supplyng a web of sheet material, the combination of, a base, a carrier on said base for supporting a roll of web and for advancing the roll from a first station to a second station, said carrier supporting said roll for rotation about the axis of the roll, means for guiding said web as the latter is unwound from said roll and operable to guide the web when the roll is in each of said stations and when the roll is being advanced from said first station to said second station, an arm mounted on said base to swing about a second axis parallel to the axis of said roll, a movable member mounted on said arm, means urging said arm to swing about said second axis thereby to bring said movable member into engagement with the periphery of said roll and maintaining such engagement as said carrier advances the roll to said second station, said member being frictionally driven by said roll when in engagement with the latter, a brake mounted on said base and operable when energized to apply a braking force to said member and thus to said web, mechanism connecting said brake to said member in all positions of the latter, and means responsive to the tension of said web and operable to control the energization of said brake thereby to continuously control the tension as the roll is advanced to said second station.
- 3. In an apparatus as defined in claim 2, a rotary member mounted on said base to turn about said second axis, said brake being stationarily mounted on said base, said mechanism including first and second transmissions connecting said rotary member respectively to said brake and to said movable member.
- 4. An apparatus as defined in claim 3 in which said rotary member comprises two coaxial pulleys and said first and second transmissions respectively include first and second drive belts extending around the respective ones of said pulleys.
- 5. An apparatus as defined in claim 2 in which said movable member is an endless belt.
- 6. In an apparatus for continuously supplyng a web of sheet material, the combination of, a base, a carrier on said base for supporting a roll of web wound on a core and for advancing the roll from a first station to a second station, said carrier supporting said core for rotation of said roll about the axis of the core, means for guiding said web as the latter is unwound from said roll and operable to guide the web when the roll is in each of said stations and when the roll is being advanced from said first station to said second station, a movable member in frictional driving engagement with the periphery of said roll when the latter is in said first station and driven by the roll as said web is unwound, means supporting said member on said base for movement with the advance of said roll and maintaining said member in frictional engagement with the roll as the roll is advanced to said second station, a first brake stationarily mounted on said base, mechanism connecting said brake to said member in all positions of the latter and operable when energized to apply a braking force to said member and thus to said roll, control means responsive to the tension of said web and operable to control the energization of said first brake thereby to continuously control the tension as the roll is advanced to said second station, and a second brake stationarily mounted on said base adjacent said second station and engageable with said core when said roll is at the second station, said second brake being operable when energized to apply a braking force to said core and thus to said roll, said control means being operable to control the energization of said second brake in response to the tension of said web and further being operable to deenergize said first brake and energize said second brake after said roll has been advanced to said second station.
- 7. In an apparatus as defined in claim 6, a clutch assembly disposed at said second station to be alined with said core when said roll is at the second station, said clutch assembly being rotatable and engageable with said core to rotate with the latter, and means connecting said clutch assembly to said second brake whereby the latter when energized applies the braking force to the roll through the clutch assembly and the core.
- 8. Apparatus as defined in claim 7 in which said means connecting said clutch assembly to said second brake includes a rotatable shaft coaxial with said core when said roll is at said second station, said clutching assembly including a first sleeve axially slidably mounted on said shaft to turn with the latter and a second sleeve axially slidably mounted on said first sleeve to turn therewith, means for moving one of said sleeves axially into frictional engagement with said core whereby the sleeve and said shaft turns with the core, and means for moving the other of said sleeves into interlocking engagement with said core to mechanically connect the core and said shaft.
