Claims
- 1. An apparatus for controlling the flow of articles, comprising:
an infeed conveyor driven in a first direction to convey articles therealong in said first direction, and an outfeed conveyor driven in an opposite direction to convey articles therealong in said opposite direction; said infeed and outfeed conveyors spaced apart and generally parallel so as to define a space therebetween; a movable transport member disposed between and movable along said space, said transport member further comprising a rotatable member drivingly engaged on a common drive surface simultaneously by said infeed and outfeed conveyors so that said rotatable member continuously rotates as either of said infeed and outfeed conveyors move and said transport member travels along said space if a relative speed difference exists between said infeed and outfeed conveyors causing said transport member to travel in the direction of the faster of said infeed and outfeed conveyor; and a rotating article transfer member carried by and driven by said transport member to rotate and transfer articles between said infeed conveyor and said outfeed conveyor as said rotatable member rotates relative to said infeed and outfeed conveyors.
- 2. The apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said rotating article transfer member comprises a conveying plate having a size so as to extend over at least a portion of said infeed and outfeed conveyors.
- 3. The apparatus as in claim 2, wherein said conveying plate is drivingly configured with said transport member so as to rotate at a speed different from that of said rotatable member.
- 4. The apparatus as in claim 3, further comprising a reduction gear arrangement operably disposed between said rotatable member and said conveying plate so that said conveying plate rotates at a lesser speed than said rotatable member.
- 5. The apparatus as in claim 4, wherein said reduction gear arrangement comprises a sun gear and at least two planet gears, said conveying plate driven by said planet gears.
- 6. The apparatus as in claim 2, further comprising a guide rail carried by said transport member and disposed generally around a portion of an outer circumference of said conveying plate for guiding articles transferred by said conveying plate from said infeed conveyor to said outfeed conveyor.
- 7. The apparatus as in claim 1, further comprising an alignment rail carried by said transport member adjacent said infeed conveyor upstream of said rotating article transfer member, said alignment rail moveable in a direction generally transverse to said infeed conveyor to contact and align articles on said infeed conveyor prior to transfer of the articles to said conveying plate.
- 8. The apparatus as in claim 7, wherein said alignment rail comprises a variably positionable counter-weight so that the degree of contacting force of said alignment rail against the articles can be varied.
- 9. The apparatus as in claim 1, further comprising a variably resilient deflecting rail carried by said transport member adjacent said outfeed, said deflecting rail having a length and disposed so as to contact and guide articles from said conveying plate onto said outfeed conveyor, said deflecting rail having an increasing resiliency along said length from a front end to a back end thereof.
- 10. The apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said infeed and outfeed conveyors are supported on a support structure such that a substantial portion of said infeed and outfeed conveyors are in a vertically extending spiral.
