Claims
- 1. An apparatus for packaging a plurality of articles, comprising:
- a first-belted conveyor formed of a plurality of belts having spaces therebetween;
- detector means for determining passage along said conveyor of a predetermined member of articles;
- lugs positioned within said spaces between said belts for moving between said belts and forming a first group from predetermined number of articles and moving said first group independently of other articles on said conveyor;
- means for moving said first group transversely of said conveyor;
- elevator means for receiving said first group;
- means for lowering said elevator means for receiving a subsequent group moved transversely atop said first group to form a stacked grouping; and
- means for moving said stacked group into said carton.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising a second set of conveyor belts carrying said lugs and having the ability to move at a speed greater than said first belted conveyor.
- 3. Apparatus for assembling a carton comprising:
- means for supplying a flattened carton blank;
- means for setting up said carton blank to form an interior volume communicating with the exterior of said carton through opposed openings, said carton having a pair of major and minor flaps at each said opening for covering said openings, one said opening being positioned for receipt of articles to be packaged with the other said opening remote therefrom;
- a pair of rotatable shafts adjacent each end of said other opening, each shaft carrying a first finger for closing one of said minor flaps and a second finger for closing one of said major flaps upon rotation of each said shaft for closing said other opening prior to being contacted by articles; and
- a pair of rotatable shafts adjacent each end of said one opening, each shaft carrying a first finger for closing one of said major flaps of said one opening upon rotation of each said shaft for closing.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 3 further comprising means for closing the remaining major flap of said one opening and said other opening; and
- means for conveying said carton to the remaining means for closing said major flaps of said one opening and said other opening.
- 5. An apparatus for packaging a plurality of articles, comprising:
- a conveyor;
- detector means for determining passage along said conveyor of a predetermined member of articles
- means associated with said conveyor for forming a first group from said predetermined number of articles and moving said first group independently of other articles on said conveyor;
- means for moving said first group transversely of said conveyor;
- elevator means for receiving said first group;
- means for lowering said elevator means for receiving a subsequent group moved transversely atop said first group to form a stacked grouping;
- means for presenting a carton having an opening adjacent said elevator;
- means for moving said stacked group into said carton; and
- said elevator means comprising means for compressing said stacked group, whereby upon actuation of said means for moving said stacked group into said carton, said stacked group has a cross-sectional area less than the cross-sectional area of the opening of said carton.
- 6. An apparatus for packaging a plurality of articles, comprising:
- a conveyor;
- detector means for determining passage along said conveyor of a predetermined member of articles;
- means associated with said conveyor for forming a first group from said predetermined number of articles and moving said first group independently of other articles on said conveyor;
- means for moving said first group transversely of said conveyor;
- elevator means for receiving said first group;
- means for lowering said elevator means for receiving a subsequent group moved transversely atop said first group to form a stacked grouping;
- means for presenting a carton having an opening adjacent said elevator;
- means for moving said stacked group into said carton; and
- wherein said means for presenting comprises:
- means for supplying a flattened carton blank;
- means for setting up said carton blank to form an interior volume communicating with the exterior of said carton through opposed openings, said carton having a pair of major and minor flaps at each said opening for covering said openings, one of said openings being positioned adjacent said elevator means upon being set up and with the other said opening remote therefrom;
- a pair of rotatable shafts, each shaft carrying a first finger for closing one of said minor flaps and a second finger for closing one of said major flaps upon rotation of each said shaft for closing, said other opening prior to being contacted by said stacked grouping upon actuation of said means for moving said stacked grouping;
- a pair of rotatable shafts adjacent each end of said one opening, each shaft carrying a first finger for closing a minor flap and a second finger for closing a major flap of said one opening upon rotation of each said shaft for closing said one opening after receipt of said stacked group;
- whereby said pair of minor flaps and one of said pair of major flaps of each opening are closed as said carton remains stationarily positioned adjacent said elevator means; and
- thereby preventing the articles within said carton from spilling from either of said openings.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 6 further comprising means for closing the remaining major flap of said one opening and said other opening; and
- means for conveying said carton from a position adjacent said elevator to said means for closing the remaining major flap of said one opening and said other opening.
