Claims
- 1. An apparatus for cooling a plurality of electronic modules comprising:
- a module housing;
- a cooling fluid intake housing defining a cooling fluid intake chamber disposed on one side of the module housing, the cooling fluid intake housing having an intake opening therein for directing cooling fluid from the cooling fluid intake chamber into the module housing;
- a cooling fluid exhaust housing defining a cooling fluid exhaust chamber disposed on a second side of the module housing opposite the first side of the module housing, the cooling fluid exhaust housing having an exhaust opening therein for directing cooling fluid received from the module housing into the cooling fluid exhaust chamber;
- a plurality of electronic modules disposed in the module housing between the cooling fluid intake housing and the cooling fluid exhaust housing;
- wherein cooling fluid introduced into the module housing by the cooling fluid intake chamber passes through the plurality of electronic modules before entering the cooling fluid exhaust chamber;
- wherein the cooling fluid intake housing includes a cooling fluid entry opening disposed on a side of the cooling fluid intake housing for releasably coupling with a cooling fluid distribution intake opening disposed in a cooling fluid distribution housing for communicating cooling fluid from the cooling fluid distribution housing to the cooling fluid intake chamber;
- wherein the cooling fluid exhaust housing includes a cooling fluid exit opening disposed on a side of the cooling fluid exhaust housing for releasably coupling with a cooling fluid distribution exhaust opening disposed in the cooling fluid distribution housing for communicating cooling fluid from the cooling fluid exhaust chamber to the cooling fluid distribution housing; and
- wherein the cooling fluid entry opening and the cooling fluid exit opening are disposed on the same side of the module housing.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the cooling fluid intake opening and the cooling fluid exit opening face in the same direction.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the cooling fluid entry opening is disposed generally perpendicularly to the cooling fluid intake opening, and wherein the cooling fluid exit opening is disposed generally perpendicularly to the cooling fluid exhaust opening.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising electrical coupling means for electrically coupling the plurality of electronic modules together, the electrical coupling means including an electrical connector disposed on a side of the module housing releasably coupling with a complementary electrical connector disposed on a side of the cooling fluid distribution housing.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the electrical coupling means includes a backplane having a plurality of drive connectors, and wherein each electronic module includes a complementary electrical connector releasably coupling each electronic module to one of the drive connectors.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the backplane is disposed in the middle of the module housing, wherein the plurality of drive connectors are distributed on first and second opposite sides of the backplane, and wherein the plurality of electronic modules comprise:
- a first row of electronic modules coupled to the drive connectors on the first side of the backplane and extending therefrom; and
- a second row of electronic modules coupled to the drive connectors on the second side of the backplane and extending therefrom.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the electrical connector is disposed on the same side of the module housing as the cooling fluid entry opening and the cooling fluid exit opening.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 7 further comprising:
- a slidable carriage disposed within the module housing and containing the plurality of electronic modules so that the carriage may be drawn from the module housing for gaining access to the plurality of modules contained therein;
- wherein the electrical coupling means further comprises a retractable bus so that the carriage may be drawn from the module housing without electrically disconnecting the plurality of electronic modules from the electrical connector disposed on the side of the module housing.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein each electronic module is disposed within an interior portion of an enclosure and affixed thereto, the enclosure including:
- a first wall facing the intake opening and having a plurality of apertures disposed therein for communicating cooling fluid from the intake opening to the interior portion; and
- an second wall facing the exhaust opening and having a plurality of apertures disposed therein for communicating cooling fluid from the interior portion to the exhaust opening.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the cooling fluid intake housing comprises:
- a cover plenum; and
- a first orifice plate disposed adjacent the first side of the module housing, the orifice plate having a plurality of orifices for directing cooling fluid from the intake chamber into the module housing.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the plurality of electronic modules are disposed generally perpendicularly to the first orifice plate.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the cooling fluid exhaust housing comprises:
- a base plenum; and
- a second orifice plate disposed adjacent the second side of the module housing, the second orifice plate having a plurality of orifices for directing cooling fluid from the module housing into the exhaust chamber.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the plurality of electronic modules are disposed generally perpendicularly to the first and second orifice plates.
- 14. The apparatus according to claim 13 further comprising electrical coupling means for electrically coupling the plurality of electronic modules together, the electrical coupling means including an electrical connector disposed on a side of the module housing releasably coupling with a complementary electrical connector disposed on a side of the cooling fluid distribution housing.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the electrical coupling means includes a backplane having a plurality of drive connectors, and wherein each electronic module includes a complementary electrical connector releasably coupling each electronic module to one of the drive connectors.
- 16. The apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the backplane is disposed in the middle of the module housing, wherein the plurality of drive connectors are distributed on first and second opposite sides of the backplane, and wherein the plurality of electronic modules comprise:
- a first row of electronic modules coupled to the drive connectors on the first side of the backplane and extending therefrom; and
- a second row of electronic modules coupled to the drive connectors on the second side of the backplane and extending therefrom.
- 17. The apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the electrical connector is disposed on the same side of the module housing as the cooling fluid entry opening and the cooling fluid exit opening.
- 18. The apparatus according to claim 17 further comprising:
- a slidable carriage disposed within the module housing and containing the plurality of electronic modules so that the carriage may be drawn from the module housing for gaining access to the plurality of modules contained therein;
- wherein the electrical coupling means further comprises a retractable bus so that the carriage may be drawn from the module housing without electrically disconnecting the plurality of electronic modules from the electrical connector disposed on the side of the module housing.
- 19. The apparatus according to claim 17 wherein each electronic module is disposed within an interior portion of an enclosure and affixed thereto, the enclosure including:
- a first wall facing the intake opening and having a plurality of apertures disposed therein for communicating cooling fluid from the intake opening to the interior portion; and
- an second wall facing the exhaust opening and having a plurality of apertures disposed therein for communicating cooling fluid from the interior portion to the exhaust opening.
- 20. An apparatus for cooling a plurality of electronic modules comprising:
- a module housing;
- a cooling fluid intake housing defining a cooling fluid intake chamber disposed on one side of the module housing, the cooling fluid intake housing having an intake opening therein for directing cooling fluid from the cooling fluid intake chamber into the module housing;
- a cooling fluid exhaust housing defining a cooling fluid exhaust chamber disposed on a second side of the module housing opposite the first side of the module housing, the cooling fluid exhaust housing having an exhaust opening therein for directing cooling fluid received from the module housing into the cooling fluid exhaust chamber;
- a plurality of electronic modules disposed in the module housing between the cooling fluid intake housing and the cooling fluid exhaust housing;
- wherein cooling fluid introduced into the module housing by the cooling fluid intake chamber passes through the plurality of electronic modules before entering the cooling fluid exhaust chamber;
- wherein at least one of the cooling fluid intake housing or cooling fluid exhaust housing includes a cooling fluid transfer opening disposed on a side thereof for releasably coupling with a cooling fluid distribution opening disposed in a cooling fluid distribution housing for communicating cooling fluid between the cooling fluid distribution housing and the module housing;
- electrical coupling means for electrically coupling the plurality of electronic modules together, the electrical coupling means including:
- an electrical connector disposed on a side of the module housing for releasably coupling with a complementary electrical connector disposed on a side of the cooling fluid distribution housing;
- a backplane having a plurality of drive connectors, the backplane being disposed generally perpendicularly to the cooling fluid intake housing and to the cooling fluid exhaust housing; and
- wherein each electronic module includes a complementary electrical connector releasably coupling each electronic module to one of the drive connectors so that each electronic module is disposed generally perpendicularly to the backplane, to the cooling fluid intake housing, and to the cooling fluid exhaust housing.
- 21. The apparatus according to claim 20 wherein the backplane is disposed in the middle of the module housing, wherein the plurality of drive connectors are distributed on first and second opposite sides of the backplane, and wherein the plurality of electronic modules comprise:
- a first row of electronic modules coupled to the drive connectors on the first side of the backplane and extending therefrom; and
- a second row of electronic modules coupled to the drive connectors on the second side of the backplane and extending therefrom.
- 22. The apparatus according to claim 20 wherein the electrical connector is disposed on the same side of the module housing as the cooling fluid transfer opening.
- 23. The apparatus according to claim 22 further comprising:
- a slidable carriage disposed within the module housing and containing the plurality of electronic modules so that the carriage may be drawn from the module housing for gaining access to the plurality of modules contained therein; and
- wherein the electrical coupling means further comprises a retractable bus so that the carriage may be drawn from the module housing without electrically disconnecting the plurality of electronic modules from the electrical connector disposed on the side of the module housing.
- 24. The apparatus according to claim 20 wherein each electronic module is disposed within an interior portion of an enclosure and affixed thereto, the enclosure including:
- a first wall facing the intake opening and having a plurality of apertures disposed therein for communicating cooling fluid from the intake opening to the interior portion; and
- an second wall facing the exhaust opening and having a plurality of apertures disposed therein for communicating cooling fluid from the interior portion to the exhaust opening.
- 25. The apparatus according to claim 20 wherein the cooling fluid intake housing comprises:
- a cover plenum; and
- a first orifice plate disposed adjacent the first side of the module housing, the orifice plate having a plurality of orifices for directing cooling fluid from the intake chamber into the module housing.
- 26. The apparatus according to claim 25 wherein the plurality of electronic modules are disposed generally perpendicularly to the first orifice plate.
- 27. The apparatus according to claim 25 wherein the cooling fluid exhaust housing comprises:
- a base plenum; and
- a second orifice plate disposed adjacent the second side of the module housing, the second orifice plate having a plurality of orifices for directing cooling fluid from the module housing into the exhaust chamber.
- 28. The apparatus according to claim 27 wherein the plurality of electronic modules are disposed generally perpendicularly to the first and second orifice plates.
- 29. The apparatus according to claim 28 wherein the backplane is disposed in the middle of the module housing, wherein the plurality of drive connectors are distributed on first and second opposite sides of the backplane, and wherein the plurality of electronic modules comprise:
- a first row of electronic modules coupled to the drive connectors on the first side of the backplane and extending therefrom; and
- a second row of electronic modules coupled to the drive connectors on the second side of the backplane and extending therefrom.
- 30. The apparatus according to claim 28 wherein the electrical connector is disposed on the same side of the module housing as the cooling fluid transfer opening.
- 31. The apparatus according to claim 30 further comprising:
- a slidable carriage disposed within the module housing and containing the plurality of electronic modules so that the carriage may be drawn from the module housing for gaining access to the plurality of modules contained therein; and
- wherein the electrical coupling means further comprises a retractable bus so that the carriage may be drawn from the module housing without electrically disconnecting the plurality of electronic modules from the electrical connector disposed on the side of the module housing.
- 32. The apparatus according to claim 30 wherein each electronic module is disposed within an interior portion of an enclosure and affixed thereto, the enclosure including:
- a first wall facing the intake opening and having a plurality of apertures disposed therein for communicating cooling fluid from the intake opening to the interior portion; and
- an second wall facing the exhaust opening and having a plurality of apertures disposed therein for communicating cooling fluid from the interior portion to the exhaust opening.
