Claims
- 1. An apparatus for irradiating a target having a central axis and a diameter, with electromagnetic radiation, comprising:
- a plurality of individual applicators, wherein each of said applicators is a dipole antenna;
- means for coupling said applicators together to form an annular array forming an interior for locating the target therein and said applicators positioned to emit radiation toward the central axis having the radiation electric field component aligned parallel with the central axis;
- a bolus located within said interior and adaptable for positioning between the applicators and the target; and
- means for coupling electromagnetic radiation to said applicators and for providing radiation having a predetermined phase relationship.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said applicators has arms having dimensions which vary in a preselected constant proportion to emit radiation at a wavelength within a range of 0.75 and 2 times the target diameter whereby the efficiency of radiation coupling into the target is improved.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising the bolus filled with dielectric fluid having an impedance approximately equivalent to an applicator impedance at the operating frequency.
- 4. An apparatus for irradiating a target having a target axis and a target diameter with electromagnetic radiation, comprising:
- radiation means for providing electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength within a range of 0.75 and 2 times the target diameter;
- a plurality of individual applicators coupled together forming an annular radiator having an aperture of size to contain said target, said applicators configured to emit an electric field component of the radiation aligned parallel with the central axis of the target contained therein; and
- means for coupling said radiation means to said applicators and for providing the radiation with a predetermined phase relationship.
