Claims
- 1. Apparatus for applying a coating to a product comprising:
- one or more plate means having a plurality of product holder means for retaining the product;
- feeder-loader means for loading product onto the product holder means;
- one or more processing stations;
- guide means for transporting said one or more plate means to said one or more processing stations;
- at least one of said one or more processing stations having a dipping station;
- a first vacuum chamber means for engaging a first of said one or more plate means, said first vacuum chamber means being located at said dipping station of said one or more processing stations;
- transfer means for transferring said first plate means from said guide means to said first vacuum chamber means at said dipping station;
- a first set of a plurality of vacuum tubes disposed within said first vacuum chamber means and connected to a vacuum source, said first set of a plurality of vacuum tubes being constructed and arranged to extend within said plurality of product holder means of said first plate means transferred to said first vacuum chamber means and engage said product;
- vacuum tube actuator means for raising and lowering said first set of a plurality of vacuum tubes relative to the plurality of product holder means of said first plate means;
- said dipping station having dip tank means for retaining a quantity of a coating material; and
- dipping station manipulating means for selectively rotating said first vacuum chamber means having said first plate means engaged thereto and raising and lowering said first vacuum chamber means having said first plate means engaged thereto, said first plate means being lowered such that at least a portion of the product is immersed in said coating material.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said one or more plate means comprises a plurality of rows of individual product holders and being constructed to retain said individual product holders.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said individual product holders comprise a substantially cylindrical tubular body portion having two open ends and a seat on one of said open ends.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said vacuum tube actuator means extends the plurality of vacuum tubes through said individual product holders to engage a product located on said seat and to lift said product from said seat in a raised position.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising means for removably mounting said first plate means to said vacuum chamber means.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 further comprising engagement bushings disposed on said first plate means and said for removably mounting means for removably mounting comprises engagement pins attached to said first vacuum chamber means so as to be removably inserted within said engagement bushings.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said transfer means comprises cooperating vertical and horizontal motion translator means for retaining said one or more plate means in a horizontal plane during said transfer.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said manipulating means comprises reciprocating arm means mounted to a shaft for raising and lowering said first vacuum chamber means.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said first vacuum chamber means is connected to rotation means for selectively rotating said first vacuum chamber.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said reciprocating arm means and said rotation means are formed as an integral assembly.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said first vacuum chamber means is constructed to engage said first and a second of said one or more plate means on opposing sides of said first vacuum chamber means.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said first vacuum chamber means comprises:
- a second set of a plurality of vacuum tubes disposed within said first vacuum chamber means, said second set of a plurality of vacuum tubes being constructed and arranged to extend within said plurality of product holders of said second of said one or more plate means and engage said product; and
- second vacuum tube actuator means for raising and lowering said second set of a plurality of vacuum tubes relative to the plurality of product holders of said second plate means.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:
- a rotating station located at one of said one or more processing stations, said rotating station being located downstream of said dipping station, such that said guide means transports said first plate means from said dipping station to said rotating station;
- a second vacuum chamber means located at said rotating station;
- a plurality of vacuum tubes disposed within said second vacuum chamber means and connected to a vacuum source;
- engagement means for attaching said second vacuum chamber means to said first plate means transported by said guide means such that said plurality of vacuum tubes disposed within said second vacuum chamber means extends through said plurality of product holder means; and
- rotation means for rotating said second vacuum chamber means having said first plate means engaged therefrom, and for returning said first plate means to said guide means.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said engagement means comprises a spring means and an actuating means for alternately compressing and releasing said spring means to alternately engage and dispense said second vacuum chamber means.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said actuating means comprises a gear/pulley system.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said second vacuum chamber means comprises a lower vacuum chamber housing and an upper cover member.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16 where said engagement means comprises engagement pins mounted to said lower vacuum chamber housing, said engagement pins engaging said upper cover member when said lower vacuum chamber housing is raised.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein said lower vacuum chamber housing and said upper cover member are each in the shape of half cylinders each having a flat surface with said flat surfaces facing each other thereby forming a cylindrically shaped said second vacuum chamber means.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 where said lower vacuum chamber housing and upper cover member are constructed and arranged to engage and rotate said first plate means 360.degree. about the longitudinal axis of said plate means.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:
- a rotating station located at one of said one or more processing stations, said rotating station being located downstream of said dipping station such that said guide means transports said first plate means from said dipping station to said rotating station;
- a second vacuum chamber means connected to a source of vacuum and located at said rotating station;
- actuator means for engaging said second vacuum chamber means with said first plate means;
- engagement means for providing a vacuum tight seal between said second vacuum chamber means and said first plate means, said engagement means including a fluid connection means between said second vacuum chamber means and said plurality of product holder means; and
- rotation means for rotating said second vacuum chamber means having said first plate means engaged thereto, and for returning said first plate means to said guide means.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein said engagement means comprises a resilient gasket member having a fluid passage aligned with each of said plurality of product holders.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for raising and lowering said dip tank means.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein said raising and lowering means is constructed so as to lower said dip tank means such that no portion of said product can be immersed in said coating material when said first plate means is lowered.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 23 wherein said raising and lowering means comprises actuating means for maintaining said dip tank means in a normally raised position to allow product to be at least partially immersed, said actuating means moving said dip tank means to said lowered position in response to a power cut-off to said apparatus.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein said raising and lowering means comprises a cam operated spring means.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said product is a tablet and said coating material is gelatin.
