Claims
- 1. An apparatus for use in a printer that dispenses a viscous material at predetermined positions forming a pattern on a substrate, the apparatus comprising:a material dispenser configured and arranged to dispense the viscous material onto the substrate, the material dispenser including a chamber to contain the viscous material to be dispensed to the substrate, the chamber having an opening through which the viscous material is dispensed onto the substrate; a retraction device, extendable into the chamber, that prevents leakage of the viscous material from the opening after dispensing is complete, the retraction device being configured and arranged to increase a volume of the chamber after dispensing; and a cartridge coupled to the chamber, the cartridge being configured and arranged to contain material to be dispensed to the chamber, the cartridge further including an inlet to receive pressurized air to force the material from the cartridge into the chamber and out of the opening of the chamber.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the refraction device includes at least one plunger that is extendable into the chamber to vary a volume of the chamber.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the at least one plunger is disposed along a portion of the chamber opposite to the opening.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the at least one plunger includes an actuator coupled to the plunger to control movement of the plunger.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the actuator has a first air inlet and a second air inlet, the actuator being configured and arranged to provide movement of the plunger in a first direction upon the application of pressurized air at the first inlet and to provide movement of the plunger in a second direction upon the application of pressurized air to the second inlet.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the first direction of movement of the plunger is toward the opening and the second direction of movement of the plunger is away from the opening.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cartridge includes a cartridge configured and arranged for removable connection to the material dispenser.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherern the cartridge has an outlet coupled to at least one port provided by the material dispenser.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the material dispenser is configured and arranged to be movable across the substrate in a direction along a first axis, and wherein the chamber has a second axis extending along a length of the chamber, the second axis being orthogonal to the first axis.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the opening of the chamber is elongated about a third axis, the third axis being parallel to the second axis of the chamber.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the material dispenser further includes a pair of inwardly facing blades that contact the substrate when the material dispenser dispenses material to the substrate to prevent excess material from remaining on the substrate.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a pressure sensor coupled to the material dispenser to sense pressure within the chamber, the pressure sensor being operatively coupled to a controller wherein the controller senses the pressure within the chamber and controls pressurized air provided to the material dispenser to maintain the pressure within the chamber at a desired value.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 further comprising a temperature sensor coupled to the material dispenser to sense temperature of the viscous material within the chamber, the temperature sensor being operatively coupled to the controller wherein the controller senses the temperature of the viscous material within the chamber and controls heat provided to the material dispenser to maintain the temperature of the viscous material within the chamber at a desired value.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the retraction device includes a plurality of plungers disposed along a portion of the chamber that are extendable into the chamber to vary a volume of the chamber.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the material dispenser is configured and arranged to be movable across the substrate in a direction along a first axis, and wherein the chamber has a second axis extending along a length of the chamber, the second axis being orthogonal to the first axis.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the plurality of plungers are disposed along a third axis, the third axis being parallel to the second axis of the chamber.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the viscous material includes solder paste and to substrate includes a circuit board.
- 18. An apparatus for use in a printer that dispenses a viscous material at predetermined positions forming a pattern on a substrate, the apparatus comprising:a material dispenser configured and arranged to dispense the viscous material onto the substrate, the material dispenser including a chamber to contain the viscous material, the chamber having an opening through which the viscous material is dispensed; means for retaining the viscous material in the chamber after dispensing is complete including means for increasing a volume of the chamber; a cartridge coupled to at least one port provided by the material dispenser, the cartridge being configured and arranged to contain material to be dispensed to the chamber; and means for applying pressure to the viscous material in the cartridge to force the material from the cartridge into the chamber and out of the opening of the chamber.
