Claims
- 1. An apparatus for treating pulp with a gaseous reaction medium, comprising:
- a fluffer having a pulp inlet and a comminuting zone for receiving a mixture of a pulp and a gaseous reaction medium and for fluffing and refining said pulp in the presence of said gaseous reaction medium to produce a partially reacted pulp;
- a pulp static bed reactor having an inlet positioned directly below said fluffer for receiving said fluffed and refined pulp and gaseous reaction medium directly from said fluffer, whereby said fluffed pulp falls downward through an atmosphere of said gaseous reaction medium in said reactor, said reactor having a pulp outlet at a lower end thereof;
- a rotating distributor disposed in said reactor and spaced below said inlet for receiving said fluffed pulp falling downward through said reactor and for substantially uniformly distributing said pulp across the diameter of said reactor and forming a substantially uniform and homogeneous pulp bed having a substantially uniform upper surface and bed height; and
- a supply inlet for introducing a gaseous reaction medium into said reactor and passing said gaseous reaction medium through said pulp bed.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said supply inlet for introducing said gaseous reaction medium into said reactor comprises a chute for directing pulp and reaction medium from said fluffer to said reactor.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said reactor further comprises a second supply inlet for introducing a gaseous reaction medium into said reactor and passing said gaseous reaction medium through said pulp bed.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a mixing device for mixing said gaseous reaction medium with said pulp and for feeding said mixture of pulp and reaction medium to said inlet of said fluffer.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said distributor comprises
- a rotating distribution disc positioned below said inlet for receiving fluffed pulp from said fluffer and deflecting and distributing said pulp radially outward and circumferentially across a diameter of said reactor to form a uniform and homogeneous pulp bed.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said distributor comprises
- a rotating upwardly open chute spaced below said inlet of said reactor for receiving said pulp from said fluffer and distributing said pulp circumferentially across a diameter of said reactor to form said uniform and homogeneous pulp bed.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said distributor comprises
- at least one substantially horizontal arm rotating about a substantially vertical axis for smoothing an upper surface of said pulp bed.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein said at least one arm has a length about 60% to 80% of the radius of said reactor.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said distributor comprises
- a substantially vertical rotating shaft,
- at least one substantially horizontal arm coupled to said shaft for smoothing a surface of said pulp bed and being movable along said shaft in response to changes in a height of said pulp bed.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising
- a flexible support coupled at an upper end of said vertical shaft and being coupled to said substantially horizontal arm, said flexible support being sufficiently flexible to wind around said shaft with increased resistance of said substantially horizontal arm against said pulp bed.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said flexible support comprises a pair of chains extending from said vertical shaft to opposite ends of said horizontal arm.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising
- a rotating discharge device in a bottom portion of said reactor for discharging said pulp, and
- wherein said distributor is coupled to said discharge means for rotating therewith.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said reactor has a height to width ratio of at least 0.5.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said fluffer further includes an inlet for receiving a gaseous reaction medium to feed a substantially uniform mixture of the gaseous reaction medium and the pulp to said comminuting zone.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said inlet of said static bed reactor is positioned directly below an outlet of said fluffer.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said chute is vertically disposed wherein said pulp free falls through said gaseous reaction medium in said chute.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said inlet of said static reactor is positioned in a top end of said reactor.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said disc is inclined with respect to a vertical axis of said reactor, and said disc rotates about said vertical axis.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said chute is inclined with respect to a vertical axis of said reactor and said chute rotates about said vertical axis.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein said chute has a longitudinal dimension extending radially outward from said vertical axis and has a pulp discharge end extending diagonally with respect to said longitudinal dimension of said chute.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein said distributor comprises a first horizontal arm spaced a first distance from said inlet of said reactor and a second horizontal arm spaced a second distance from said inlet and extending substantially perpendicular to said first arm, wherein said vertical axis for rotation of said horizontal arms is axially aligned with said inlet of said reactor.
- 22. An apparatus for treating pulp with a gaseous reaction medium, comprising:
- a fluffer having a pulp inlet and a comminuting zone for receiving a mixture of a pulp and a gaseous reaction medium and for fluffing and refining said pulp in the presence of said gaseous reaction medium to produce a partially reacted pulp and an outlet for discharging said partially reacted pulp;
- a pulp static bed reactor having an inlet positioned directly below said outlet of said fluffer for receiving said partially reacted pulp and gaseous reaction medium directly from said fluffer, said reactor having a pulp outlet at a lower end thereof;
- a rotating distributor disc positioned in said reactor and spaced below said inlet for receiving said partially reacted pulp and for deflecting and distributing said pulp radially outward and circumferentially across the diameter of said reactor and forming a substantially uniform and homogeneous pulp bed having a substantially uniform upper surface and bed height; and
- an inlet for introducing a gaseous reaction medium into said reactor and passing said gaseous reaction medium through said pulp bed.
- 23. An apparatus for treating pulp with a gaseous reaction medium, comprising:
- a fluffer having a pulp inlet and a comminuting zone for receiving a mixture of a pulp and a gaseous reaction medium and for fluffing and refining said pulp in the presence of said gaseous reaction medium to produce a partially reacted pulp and an outlet for discharging said partially reacted pulp;
- a pulp static bed reactor having an inlet positioned below said outlet of said fluffer for receiving said partially reacted pulp and gaseous reaction medium directly from said fluffer, said reactor having a pulp outlet at a lower end thereof;
- a rotating upwardly open distribution chute disposed in said reactor and spaced below said inlet of said reactor for receiving said pulp from said fluffer and distributing said pulp across the diameter of said reactor and forming a substantially uniform and homogeneous pulp bed having a substantially uniform upper surface and bed height; and
- an inlet for introducing a gaseous reaction medium into said reactor and passing said gaseous reaction medium through said pulp bed.
- 24. An apparatus for treating pulp with a gaseous reaction medium, comprising:
- a fluffer having a pulp inlet and a comminuting zone for receiving a mixture of a pulp and a gaseous reaction medium and for fluffing and refining said pulp in the presence of said gaseous reaction medium to produce a partially reacted pulp and an outlet for discharging said partially reacted pulp;
- a pulp static bed reactor having an inlet positioned directly below said outlet of said fluffer for receiving said fluffed and refined pulp and gaseous reaction medium directly from said fluffer, said reactor having a pulp outlet at a lower end thereof;
- at least one substantially horizontal distributing arm rotating about a vertical axis and disposed in said reactor and spaced below said inlet for substantially uniformly distributing said pulp across the diameter of said reactor and forming a substantially uniform and homogeneous pulp bed having a substantially uniform and smooth upper surface and bed height; and
- an inlet for introducing a gaseous reaction medium into said reactor and passing said gaseous reaction medium through said pulp bed.
- 25. An apparatus for treating pulp with a gaseous reaction medium, comprising:
- a fluffer having a pulp inlet and a comminuting zone for receiving a mixture of a pulp and a gaseous reaction medium and for fluffing and refining said pulp in the presence of said gaseous reaction medium to produce a partially reacted pulp, and an outlet for discharging said partially reacted pulp;
- a pulp static bed reactor having an inlet positioned directly below said outlet of said fluffer for receiving said fluffed refined pulp and gaseous reaction medium directly from said fluffer, whereby said pulp falls downwardly through said reactor in an atmosphere of said gaseous reaction medium, said reactor having a pulp outlet at a lower end thereof;
- a rotating shaft positioned below said inlet of said reactor and a distributor coupled to a top end of said shaft and being disposed in said reactor and spaced below said inlet for receiving said pulp falling downwardly through said reactor and substantially uniformly distributing said pulp across the diameter of said reactor and forming a substantially uniform and homogeneous pulp bed having a substantially uniform upper surface and bed height; and
- an inlet for introducing a gaseous reaction medium into said reactor and passing said gaseous reaction medium through said pulp bed.
