Claims
- 1. An apparatus for transporting small particles and fines during extraction, comprising:
- an elongated tank having first and second portions;
- at least one liquid discharge outlet for the withdrawal of enriched extraction liquid from the first portion of said tank;
- at least one moveable milli-screen constructed and arranged for engaging and pushing sub-divided solids, including small particles and fines, toward said second portion of said tank;
- said at least one moveable milli-screen having an upstream face and a downstream face with respect to the flow direction of the liquid medium when the liquid medium is withdrawn through the discharge outlet;
- said at least one moveable milli-screen comprising at least one continuous sheet containing a plurality of discrete, small milli-openings extending from the upstream face to the downstream face thereof;
- at least one solids feed inlet for the introduction of sub-divided solids containing small particles and fines into the first portion of said tank;
- at least one solids discharge outlet for the withdrawal of spent solids from the second portion of said tank;
- at least one liquid inlet at the second portion of said tank for introducing liquid extracting medium for flow countercurrent to the movement of the solids;
- said milli-openings in said at least one moveable milli-screen comprising sizes less than about 0.095 inches across on the upstream face for allowing liquid medium passage but providing a substantial barrier to the passage therethrough of small particles and fines;
- said milli-openings on the downstream face comprising sizes larger than the corresponding milli-openings on the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen in order to facilitate passage of the liquid medium therethrough and to reduce clogging; and
- at least one drive system for moving said at least one milli-screen.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further characterized in that at least one rigid element supports said at least one milli-screen during the pushing movements.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the milli-size openings in the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen range from about 0.001 inch to about 0.095 inches across.
- 4. The apparatus of claims 1 in which the milli-size openings in the upstream face of said at least milli-screen range from about 0.002 inches to about 0.075 inches across.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the milli-size openings in the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen range from about 0.0025 inches to about 0.060 inches across.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said at least one drive system provides for rotation of said tank and said at least one milli-screen.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the tank is stationary, and said at least one milli-screen is moved relative to the tank.
- 8. An apparatus for transporting small particles and fines in connection with an extraction operation, comprising:
- an elongated tank having first and second portions;
- at least one liquid discharge outlet for the withdrawal of enriched extraction liquid from the first portion of said tank;
- at least one milli-screen movably mounted for contacting and pushing the sub-divided solids including small particles and fines toward the second portion of said tank;
- moveable rigid elements supporting and moving with said milli-screens;
- said at least one moveable milli-screen having an upstream face and a downstream face with respect to the flow direction of the liquid medium when the liquid medium is withdrawn through the discharge outlet;
- said at least one moveable milli-screen comprising at least one continuous sheet containing a plurality of discrete, small milli-size openings extending from the upstream face to the downstream face thereof;
- at least one solids feed inlet for the introduction of sub-divided solids into the first portion of said tank containing small particles and fines;
- at least one solids discharge outlet for the withdrawal of spent solids from the second portion of said tank;
- at least one liquid inlet at the second portion of said tank for introducing liquid extracting medium for flow countercurrent to the movement of the solids;
- said milli-size openings comprising sizes less than about 0.095 inches across on the upstream face for allowing liquid medium passage but providing a substantial barrier to the passage therethrough of small particles and fines;
- said milli-size openings on the downstream face comprising sizes larger than the corresponding milli-size openings on the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen in order to facilitate passage of the liquid medium therethrough and to reduce clogging; and
- at least one drive system for moving said at least one milli-screen.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the milli-size openings in the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen range from about 0.001 inch to about 0.095 inches across.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the milli-size openings in the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen range from about 0.002 inches to about 0.075 inches across.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the milli-size openings in the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen range from about 0.0025 inches to about 0.060 inches across.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 8 in which said at least one drive system provides for rotation of said tank and said at least one milli-screen.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 8 in which the tank is stationary, and said at least one milli-screen is moved relative to the tank.
- 14. An apparatus for transporting small particles and fines for extraction, comprising:
- an elongated tank having first and second portions;
- at least one rotatable milli-screen, said at least one milli-screen having at least in part a helical scroll configuration for pushing solids including small particles and fines to be extracted toward the second portion of the tank;
- at least one drive system for rotating said at least one rotatable milli-screen;
- at least one solids feed inlet for the introduction of solids including small particles and fines into the first portion of said tank;
- at least one solids discharge outlet for the withdrawal of spent solids from the second portion of said tank;
- at least one liquid inlet at the second portion of said tank for the introduction of liquid extracting medium for flow countercurrent to the movement of the solids;
- at least one liquid discharge outlet for the withdrawal of enriched extraction liquid from the first portion of said tank;
- said at least one rotatable milli-screen having an upstream face and downstream face with respect to the flow of liquid toward the liquid discharge outlet;
- said at least one rotatable milli-screen comprising at least one continuous sheet having plurality of discrete, small milli-size openings, said milli-size openings being less than about 0.095 inches across their upstream faces, and sufficiently small so as to prevent passage of most of the fines, whereby at least most of the small particles and fines are carried by said at least one rotating milli-screen toward the solids discharge while the extraction liquid passes through said at least one milli-screen in countercurrent flow to the solids.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 in which the milli-openings in the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen range from about 0.001 inch to about 0.095 inches across.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 14 in which the milli-openings in the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen range from about 0.002 inches to about 0.075 inches across.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 14 in which the milli-openings in the upstream face of said at least one milli-screen range from about 0.0025 inches to about 0.060 inches across.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 14 in which said at least one drive system provides for rotation of said tank and said at least one milli-screen.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 14 in which said tank is stationary, and said at least one milli-screen is rotated relative to said tank.
