Claims
- 1. An apparatus to facilitate removal/replacement of valve springs from their corresponding valves in a cylinder head having a plurality of valves and a plurality of chambers with one chamber corresponding to at least one of said plurality of valves, said apparatus comprising:
- a flat surface for supporting said cylinder head;
- a recessed area bisecting at least a portion of said flat surface;
- a deformable bladder disposed at least partially within said recessed area having a releasably sealable inlet means for retaining a fluid introduced into said deformable bladder, said deformable bladder having a length which spans said plurality of chambers;
- a supply line connected to said deformable bladder through which said fluid is introduced; and
- a pumping means for providing pressure whereby said fluid is introduced through said supply line into said deformable bladder;
- wherein said cylinder head is disposed on said flat surface with its chambers substantially aligned with said recessed area and said fluid is introduced into said deformable bladder so that it expands to fill said chambers, forcing said plurality of valves outward to facilitate access for removal/replacement of said valve springs.
- 2. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a clamping means to provide a force to hold said cylinder head against said flat surface.
- 3. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said fluid is air.
- 4. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said fluid is water.
- 5. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said releasably sealable inlet means further provides means for releasing said fluid from said deformable bladder.
- 6. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said deformable bladder is retained entirely within said recessed area to facilitate placement of said cylinder head on aid flat surface.
- 7. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said pumping means comprises a hand pump.
- 8. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said pumping means comprises a compressed gas source.
- 9. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a reservoir for storing said fluid.
- 10. An apparatus to facilitate removal/replacement of valve springs of a cylinder head having a plurality of valves and a plurality of chambers, with one chamber corresponding to at least one of said plurality of valves, said apparatus comprising:
- a flat surface for supporting said cylinder head;
- a sealing means for retaining a fluid within said plurality of chambers, aid sealing means having a length spanning said plurality of chambers;
- a supply line for simultaneously introducing said fluid into said plurality of chambers; and
- a pumping means for providing pressure whereby said fluid is introduced through said supply line into said plurality of chambers;
- wherein said cylinder head is disposed on said flat surface with its chambers adjacent said sealing mean and said fluid is introduced into said plurality of chambers so that it provides a force within said plurality of chambers and against said plurality of valves to drive said plurality of valves outward to facilitate access for removal/replacement of said valve springs.
- 11. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein said sealing means is a sealing pad upon which said cylinder head rests, said sealing pad having a resiliency and deformability whereby a substantially airtight seal is formed within said chambers.
- 12. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein said sealing means is a deformable bladder which expands to fill said chambers when said fluid is introduced into said deformable bladder.
- 13. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein said fluid is air.
- 14. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein said fluid is water.
- 15. An apparatus for providing improved access for removal or replacement of at least one spring on a valve in a cylinder head having a plurality of chambers and a plurality of corresponding valves when said cylinder head is disassembled from an engine block wherein said at least one valve spring is disposed on a stem of a respective valve, held in place by a key bolt, the apparatus which comprises:
- a flat surface having a channel disposed therein which generally bisects said flat surface;
- a deformable bladder disposed within said channel, said deformable bladder having a length which spans said plurality of chambers;
- at least one clamping mean for clamping said cylinder head onto said flat surface so that said plurality of chambers is positioned over said deformable bladder;
- a pumping means for filling said deformable bladder with a fluid so that at least a portion of said deformable bladder expands to fill said plurality of chambers wherein each valve of said corresponding plurality of valves is forced outward so that said valve is disposed in a position to facilitate removal or replacement of said at least one valve spring by allowing compression of said at least one valve spring to provide access to a respective key bolt.
- 16. An apparatus as in claim 15 wherein said fluid is air.
