Claims
- 1. An assembly comprising a stenter apparatus and means for initially introducing a moving web into said stenter apparatus;
- said stenter apparatus comprising linearly moving edge grips movable at a given linear speed over predetermined paths; and
- said introducing means comprising: at least one conveyor belt located on one side of the moving web and at least one other conveyor belt located on the other side of the moving web, each of said conveyor belts extending into said stenter apparatus and terminating inwardly of the paths of said edge grips of said stenter apparatus; said conveyor belts being positioned so that the edge margins of the web extend beyond the edges of the conveyor belts; means for driving said conveyor belts at a linear speed substantially equal to the linear speed of said stenter apparatus edge grips; and means for operatively moving said belt conveyors into and out of operative association with the web so that when said belt conveyors are in operative association with the web they grip and transport the web into operative association with said edge grips of said stenter apparatus, and so that when said belt conveyors are not in operative association with the web they do not engage or affect the movement of the web.
- 2. An assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said at least one conveyor belt comprises a pair of conveyor belts disposed above the web, and wherein said at least one other conveyor belt comprises a pair of conveyor belts disposed below the web.
- 3. An assembly as recited in claim 2 wherein said means for operatively moving said conveyor belts comprises means for moving said upper conveyor belts upwardly and out of engagement with the web.
- 4. An assembly as recited in claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein said stenter apparatus further comprises guide plates extending up to the entry of the web into said stenter edge grips, for guiding the edge margins of the web which extend beyond the edges of the conveyor belts into operative association with said stenter edge grips.
- 5. An assembly as recited in claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein the surfaces of said conveyor belts are embossed to facilitate gripping of the moving web.
- 6. An assembly as recited in claim 1 further comprising means for temporarily deflecting the path of the web to a dump location prior to the introduction of the moving web into said stenter apparatus.
- 7. An assembly as recited in claim 6 further comprising means for severing the web so that deflection thereof to said dump location may be effected.
