Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming a parison having multiple resin layers comprising:
- a first parison layer injection molding station for forming a first parison layer of reduced thickness;
- a pair of second parison layer injection molding stations for forming a second parison layer of reduced thickness on a first parison layer with one of the second parison layer injection molding stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station;
- indexing means for moving a first of the first parison layer from the first parison layer injection molding station to one of the second parison layer injection molding stations and a second of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding stations, the second of the first parison layer being injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station while the first of the first parison layers is at the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a first two layered parison.
- 2. The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein a pair of third parison layer injection molding stations are provided for forming a third parison layer of reduced thickness on a two layered parison with one of the third parison layer injection molding stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second parison layer injection molding station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and a third parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the second of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a second two layered parison while the first two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding station and while a third of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the third of the first parison layer to the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a third two layered parison, the first two layered parison to the one of the third parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a first three layered parison while the second two layered parison remains at the other of the second parison layer injection molding stations and while a fourth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer molding station.
- 3. The invention in accordance with claim 2 wherein a pair of cooling stations are provided for cooling the three layered parison with one of the cooling stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second and third parison layer injection molding station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and a cooling station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the fourth of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a fourth two layered parison and the second two layered parison to the other of the third parison layer molding stations for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a second three layered parison while the third two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding station and the first three layered parison remains at the one of the third parison injection molding station while a fifth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the fifth of the first parison layer to the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a fifth two layered parison, the third two layered parison to the one of the third parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a third three layered parison and the first three layered parison to the one of the cooling stations while a sixth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station.
- 4. The invention in accordance with claim 3 wherein a pair of ejection stations are provided for ejecting cooled three layered parisons with one of the ejection stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second and third parison layer injection molding station and cooling station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and an ejection station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the sixth of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a sixth two layered parison and the fourth two layered parison to the other of the third parison layer molding station for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a fourth three layered parison and the second three layered parison to the one of the cooling station for further cooling while the fifth two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding station and the third three layered parison remains at the one of the third parison injection molding station and the first three layered parison remains at the one of the cooling station while a seventh of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the seventh of the first parison to the one of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a seventh two layered parison, the fifth two layered parison to the one of the third parison layer injection molding station for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a fifth three layered parison and the third three layer parison to the one of the cooling station and the first three layered cooled parison to the one of the ejection station while an eighth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison injection molding station.
- 5. The invention in accordance with claim 4 wherein each of the injection molding stations have an injection mold and a core rod assembly with at least the core rod assembly at the first parison layer injection molding station including a neck mold for forming a neck on the parisons.
- 6. The invention in accordance with claim 5 wherein the injection mold, neck mold and core rod assembly having cooling means for cooling the parison layer and layered parisons.
- 7. The invention in accordance with claim 6 wherein each of the cooling stations having a cooling mold and a core rod assembly for receiving the three layered parison and for further cooling this parison.
- 8. The invention in accordance with claim 7 wherein the indexing means include a stationary platen mounting the injection molds and cooling molds and an indexing platen mounting the core rod assemblies and neck mold.
- 9. The invention in accordance with claim 8 wherein the indexing platen includes transfer bushings, the first transfer bushing being operable to move the cooled three layered parison from the cooling station to the ejection station.
- 10. The invention in accordance with claim 2 wherein a pair of orient-stretch blow molding stations are provided for blow molding the three layered parison with one of the orient-stretch blow molding stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second and third parison layer injection molding station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and a orient-stretch blow molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the fourth of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a fourth two layered parison and the second two layered parison to the other of the third parison layer molding stations for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a second three layered parison while the third two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding station and the first three layered parison remains at the one of the third parison injection molding station while a fifth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the fifth of the first parison layer to the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a fifth two layered parison, the third two layered parison to the one of the third parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a third three layered parison and the first three layered parison to the one of the orient-stretch blow molding stations while a sixth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station.
- 11. The invention in accordance with claim 10 wherein a pair of ejection stations are provided for ejecting cooled three layered parisons with one of the ejection stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second and third parison layer injection molding station and orient-stretch blow molding station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and an ejection station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the sixth of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a sixth two layered parison and the fourth two layered parison to the other of the third parison layer molding station for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a fourth three layered parison and the second three layered parison to the one of the orient-stretch blow molding station for further cooling while the fifth two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding station and the third three layered parison remains at the one of the third parison injection molding station and the first three layered parison remains at the one of the orient-stretch blow molding station while a seventh of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the seventh of the first parison to the one of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a seventh two layered parison, the fifth two layered parison to the one of the third parison layer injection molding station for receiving a third parison layer thereon to form a fifth three layered parison and the third three layer parison to the one of the orient-stretch blow molding station and the first three layered cooled parison to the one of the ejection station while an eighth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison injection molding station.
- 12. The invention in accordance with claim 11 wherein each of the injection molding stations have an injection mold and a core rod assembly with at least the core rod assembly at the first parison layer injection molding station including a neck mold for forming a neck on the parisons.
- 13. The invention in accordance with claim 12 wherein the injection mold, neck mold and core rod assembly having cooling means for cooling the parison layer and layered parisons.
- 14. The invention in accordance with claim 13 wherein each of the orient-stretch blow molding stations includes a blow mold for receiving the three layered parison, the blow mold having a cavity to provide a selected bottle configuration.
- 15. The invention in accordance with claim 14 wherein a transfer bushing is provided for moving the three layered parison from the third parison layer injection molding station to the neighboring orient-stretch blow molding station.
- 16. The invention in accordance with claim 15 wherein a blow rod assembly is provided with each transfer bushing, each blow rod assembly is axially reciprocal relative to the provided transfer bushing to stretch the three layered parison in the provided blow mold and then blow the stretched parison into the configuration of the blow mold.
- 17. The invention in accordance with claim 16 wherein the indexing means include a stationary platen mounting the injection molds and blow molds and an indexing platen mounting the core rod assemblies and neck mold and transfer bushings.
- 18. The invention in accordance with claim 17 wherein the indexing platen includes transfer bushings operable to move blown bottles from the blow molding station to the neighboring ejection station.
- 19. The invention in accordance with claim 2 wherein the parison layers are of the same resin.
- 20. The invention in accordance with claim 2 wherein the parison layers are of different resin.
- 21. The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein the parison layers are of the same resin.
- 22. The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least two of the parison layers are of different resins.
- 23. The invention in accordance with claim 22 wherein each of the parison layers are of a different resin.
- 24. The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein a pair of cooling stations are provided for cooling the two layered parison with one of the cooling stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second parison layer injection molding station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and a cooling station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the second of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a second two layered parison while the first two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations while a third of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the third of the first parison layer to the one of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a third two layered parison, the first two layered parison to the one of the cooling station while a fourth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station.
- 25. The invention in accordance with claim 24 wherein a pair of ejection stations are provided for ejecting cooled two layered parisons with one of the ejection stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second parison layer injection molding station and cooling station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and an ejection station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the fourth of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a fourth two layered parison and the second two layered parison to the other of the cooling station while the third two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding station while a fifth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the fifth of the first parison to the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a fifth two layered parison, the third two layered parison to the one of the cooling station and the first two layered cooled parison to the one of the ejection stations while a sixth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison injection molding station.
- 26. The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein a pair of orient-stretch blow molding stations are provided for blow molding the two layered parison with one of the orient-stretch blow molding stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second parison layer injection molding station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and a orient-stretch blow molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the second of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a second two layered parison while the first two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding station while a third of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the third of the first parison layer to the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a third two layered parison, the first two layered parison to the one of the orient-stretch blow molding stations while a fourth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station.
- 27. The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein a pair of blow molding stations are provided for blow molding the two layered parison with one of the blow molding stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second parison layer injection molding station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and a blow molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the second of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a second two layered parison while the first two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations while a third of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the third of the first parison layer to the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a third two layered parison, the first two layered parison to the one of the blow molding stations while a fourth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- a pair of ejection stations are provided for ejecting blown bottles with one of the ejection stations being on opposed sides of the first parison layer injection molding station with a second parison layer injection molding station and blow molding station being interposed between the first parison layer injection molding station and an ejection station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the fourth of the first parison layer to the other of the second parison layer injection molding station for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a fourth two layered parison and the second two layered parison to the other of the blow molding station while the third two layered parison remains at the one of the second parison layer injection molding station while a fifth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison layer injection molding station;
- the indexing means being operable to move the fifth of the first parison to the one of the second parison layer injection molding stations for receiving a second parison layer thereon to form a fifth two layered parison, the third two layered parison to the one of the blow molding station and the first two layered cooled parison to the one of the ejection stations while a sixth of the first parison layer is injection molded at the first parison injection molding station.
